Our breakfast nook is in a bay window with built in seating. In order to make the seating most useful, it requires an oddly shaped top. DH banged together a temporary table out of plywood and scrap lumber from our build, which we've been using since. We have contacted a custom woodworker and will hopefully be dropping off our narra wood planks (a gift from a family friend many decades ago) with him next week so he can get started on a custom table. Note the trestle so people can easily skootch in and out of the seating. A table with legs on the corners wouldn't allow that to happen. I have no concerns about a wood top, especially with the finishes they have these days. However, I would talk to the corian guys...it is not a structural material and would need sufficient support underneath to keep it from bending/breaking. We wanted a corian bench seat in our shower and it required a steel frame to support the entire piece of corian to give it sufficient strength for the purpose. A stone top would probably need less support, but more strength in the base to support the weight. Also consider if you want to move the table for cleaning purposes...the stone would be very heavy and could damage, say, a wood floor from the weight...

A rectangular pedestal table may be hard to find but you should have better luck finding a trestle table, which would work as well. What you want to avoid is a regular 4-legged table since the legs in the corners make it difficult to slide along a bench. Susan Susanka (per one of her books) suggests an overhang of 4"-5" so you obviously have leeway for table size. The other factor affecting size is the bench's situation. Is your bench bounded by walls or cabinetry? If so, then it would be a good idea to end the table before the bench so that you have room to maneuver onto the bench. The table is shorter than the bench on the long wall because the bench ends at a cabinet. You need to approach the bench from the front not the side. If the table were as long as the bench, it would be much harder to slide onto the bench. HTH!

I don't know the details of the fixings for the granite. We had a granite table previously (see picture) for 16 years but it was so well fixed and stable, they were unable to remove the granite to move it for the current garden renovation, so sadly it had to be destroyed! So we're having to get a new piece of granite! I love the fact it needs absolutely no maintenance whatsoever, other than a scrub and wipe before use! As far as the banquette, we don't really have a choice. We've removed a higher level garden to create a new patio area and intend to have a firepit table that needs a minimum 3 metre footprint. If we have the fixed table away from the house wall and far enough away to be able to pull out chairs all the way around, it will be in the way of the chairs of the firepit table and make the whole area look/feel cluttered. I'm hoping that with a 12" gap between the seating and the table top that slim adults won't find it impossible, even if it isn't ideal. We'll have the five folding chairs for regular use, so it will only be when we have "extras" that the banquette will come into play. Does that reassure..?

Live wire oak - I failed to explain that we also have a 57” aisle between the nook and our island where the chairs on that side will sit. So the chairs on that side will definitely have plenty of space. So the 61.5” nook only needs to fit the table and bench along the back. I think we can fit a 25” deep bench along the back and a 39.5” wide table in the book (with 3-4” overlap) and the chairs in the opposite side will sit in the aisle (outside the nook). Here is a picture of how wide the aisle is. The chairs are and metal table base are positions where they would sit and there is plenty of space. So I am still wondering if 27” is enough space for a chair on the sides of the table. I positions the table base and chair on left with this much space (bench base that was started is kind of in the way). It may be a smidge tight but seems like it might be fine. I’m leaning toward ordering this table and just doing bench across the back. Is this ok? Thoughts? I’m also wondering if a carpenter could trim a couple inches off the table on either end if it was just slightly too long.
