Help needed with kitchen decor/countertop color

We are redoing our kitchen and desparately need help/suggestions re: best countertop selection for our kitchen.

We are redoing our kitchen and chose natural Indian multicolor SLATE tiles for the floor. There is a LOT of natural color variation and clefting. Our cabinets are cherry with a pecan stain, in Shaker style and rust finish square knobs. Our contractor needs us to make a decision as quickly as possible, as the granite is holding up other parts of the house project.

Initially we were looking at darker green granites like UBA TUBA and VERDE BUTTERFLY. However, when looking at slabs the one we liked best was GOLDEN RIVER. We like the movement and the colors work very well with the colors already in the kitchen and living areas (SW Blonde and Mannered gold paints). The Golden River has lots and lots of movement, with golden brown and gray veins running through it. Is it too much with our kitchen? We are open to other choices.

Our only concern is with how the Golden River (or any other choice) would look with the multicolor slate. Our tile guy just started the slate floors yesterday, and the slate does have a lot of color and a *very* rustic look.

I don't have any ideas for you, but your kitchen is looking just lovely. If you don't get many answers here, you might try posting over on the Kitchens forum, if you haven't already. Those people know their stones and could probably give you lots of specific granite names and/or pictures with slate tiles.

My opinion would be to not use the golden river and for the reason that it's got such visual activity that it will compete with the floor rather than enhance it. You may want to find a countertop that is more uniform in design and has the color of the main color of the floor. It shouldn't be too hard. I hate stepping on your idea but it's only my opinion. Others might have better ideas. Good luck.

Okay. Update on removing countertop(s). We took the first (of 2) countertops off. Abbisgram, you were correct, and there were only a few screws attaching the top. All came out easily except one which was impossible to get to without disassembling the whole cabinet, so we got out the sawzall and took care of that one. Decided for several reasons not to special order countertops. We bought a sheet of 3/4" plywood (4x8), had it cut in half lengthwise, and that will do all the new countertops. Got the first one on and will need to put the tiles and edging on. Regarding the comment from the guy at Lowes: He was correct in the sense that the cabinet was very flimsy; however, it didn't 'fall apart'. The front (where the doors are attached) is pretty standard, however the sides of the cabinet are 1/8" (at most) luan, and there is no back piece at all, just a 1x2 strip fastened to the bottom of the (old) countertop, then screwed to the wall. Thankfully, the shelf inside the cabinet seemed to help keep it all together til we got the new top on it. Once the new plywood was on though, it is as sturdy as it was before ... lol. Not sure if I mentioned that this is not our full-time home, it's a mobile home that we purchased in a resort town, so we are not there to work on it every day. Hoping to go back next week and remove/replace the 2nd countertop, then cover them. Bottom line is that it wasn't nearly as scary as the Lowe's guy made it sound. And thanks, abbisgram, for the encouragement. :) As a side note, the finished countertops will end up costing under $100 for approx. 13-14 feet of countertops. arapaho, here are a few pictures of the moulding which also was purchased from Norcraft. As you can see, the sides of the cabinets are not finished. Once we were able to move back into the kitchen--two years ago!--our DIY project slowed to just picking away at it. Just last weekend my husband did the apron trim under the windows. I certainly wanted to be able to post our kitchen but wanted to wait until it was just a little more done. I'll give it an objective eye this weekend and see if I can force myself to commit it to the internet:) We mistakenly placed the cabinets too high, forgetting we had the trim. Not only did DH have to rip the trim down he had to do it at an angle to account for this very crooked house and the very crooked ceiling. It looks fine but I was sooooo mad at me for the placement. I just knew it seemed too high, but at least it's not claustrophobic at my counter area! You can see the difference when you look at the two ends. There was a LOT that got ripped off. The appliances are all GE, purchased from a local store in their scratch and dent room because that's what the budget allowed.

Sorry TCB - just realized you are the OP :) - and just re read that you plan to change the hardware....are you doing this everywhere in the home? Will the ORB be on all door hardware throughout the home? I'd strongly suggest focusing on the tile (white with matching grout or subtlety darker grout like a bone white). Then do the hardware and select paint LAST. Thank you for the paint tone pictures with your floor - could you retake the shots with the paint samples propped vertically against the wall by the tile floor. Look at all samples as you will see them in real life because the light hits them different so anything vertical (like paint) should be evaluated vertically.

I have multicolor slate floors and cherry cabinets, too. I was originally thinking of green granite, then Uba Tuba, then black galaxy. My husband nixed all those, so we compromised on Black Impala. I like the way it looks with the floors, cabinets, and walls (cedar logs). It's a very even "pattern" that doesn't fight with the movement in the slate.

So I would try to guide you toward a granite with less movement, but that's my own preference more than decorating advice. :-)

Looking at Uxorial's kitchen ( beautiful, btw), and mentally transposing the busy granite you are looking at, it definitely is a jarring combo, very busy ;
the movement is very pronounced.

Your original choices, vb or ut, even uxorial's nero impala,
are all wonderful picks. I've had ubatuba in a bathroom and nero impala in a former kitchen and both were bullet proof, imo.

I dunno -- I think the colors in the Golden River go really well with the colors in the slate and with your cabinets (at least in your pictures). Uba Tuba or Verde Butterfly seem like they would be awfully dark.

I have uba tuba in my kitchen, and chose wood plank flooring in a non-competing color to let the granite shine. Your floors are gorgeous, if it were me, I would chose something more neutral for the counters; however, that being said I am located in the Northeast and am aware of the style of flooring and granite that many in the West combine together for that natural look. I don't want my traditional tendencies to affect your choice if that is the case.

I wasn't sure until I saw Uxorial's beautiful kitchen. Now I agree with everyone. Let the floors be the pattern and find something that won't compete.
