Yep, doing our kitchen ended up being a nightmare. Hubby put me in charge of getting everything picked out. I though I would be smart and order all of it from one place. WRONG!! Not one thing came in one time like they promised. We were breezing along and got ready to put the counter top in and found they had cut the sink hole in the wrong place. I made sure I took my paper work back with me to show them it was their error. That took another 2 weeks. Then the flooring was delayed a couple weeks. I was so mad I told them they needed to jump into one of their little trucks and go get it. It was sitting in a warehouse not far from their store but they only made one trip a week. What should have been a 2 or 3 week job ended up being 6 weeks. All in all I am pleased with the new kitchen..

A little funy along the way. My hubby lost his favorite hammer. We looked everywhere. I was doing daycare at the time so he was sure one of them had done something with it. Each night he would gather all his tools and leave them in a corner in the kitchen. Well, time went on and still no hammer. One day I was up cleaning out the top cabinets and what did I find? Dear hubby's hammer on the top of the cabinets. Of course, he didn't put it there.. He is a sweetie though....

When we remodeled our 1970's era kitchen in 1997, we went for the cheaper cabinets which didn't reach all the way to the ceiling. Altho they looked good, everyone needs more storage in their kitchen. So in 2005 we took out the cabinets and put in the larger ones that went all the way to the ceiling. Live and learn. I learned to always go for the biggest and best when you're remodeling.

Started when we decided to work on the 550 sq ft kitchen...decided to replace old 1970's bright blue counter top and blue and yellow floor tile.

Ended up getting new sub floor, new tile. New ceiling. Old wall paper removed, walls patched, and painted.
Counter tops replaced, new sink, replaced old pipes under the sink and new faucets.

My contractor is great....all work was done within a week, after very detailed planning(like where/how/who to move the large sub-zero frig,upright freezer and 8ft long server). After hearing other "adventures", this was really very simple. Workers put plastic sheeting over the entrance to the kitchen that kept dust out of the rest of the house.

My advice is to plan carefully, and have a contractor who knows how to coordinate the work. For example, he had plumbers remove old sink, and counter top removed in the morning, and the new counter top delivered in the afternoon and sink installed....it was all ready to use by dinner.

I finally got the roof on my house. Looks great!

You're right about that--one thing does lead to another. Now I want new tile behind my countertop, two solid doors replaced with paned glass doors and the bathrooms remodeled. Still haven't had our bedroom/bath painted or decided on a color for the guest room and bath.

I am doing one thing, slowly but surely. I'm donating the table on our screened porch to Habitat and putting the wicker loveseat, two chairs and coffee table there instead. Also need to get shades for the porch since the sun comes beating in there in the summer and a woven-type area rug, too. And wanted bistro-sized table and chairs for when it's cool enough to eat out there, which I found on sale at Kohl's and ordered.

Nothing stopping me from all the above but money--haha!

One thing remodeling will teach you is patience.

Ultimate 'remodeling': We bought a 1950's ranch on a great lot and planned to remodel it. Then we tore it down to build new. (I'm SO glad to have new *everything*!)

our bathroom upstairs...we just now started cleaning up after it in the small bedroom which was a catch-all...we had a temp drop ceiling in the bathroom below it (to reach and replace pipes, ect)...so now have a ceiling-less downstairs bath...we had the chance to dump the ceiling tiles in ds1's rented dumpster...he's redoing his basement..i think i should buy stock in a drywal co, we need so much right now...

I had drama with my kitchen up-grade. Actual granite slab didn't exactly match the sample, sooooo....had to re-seclect the backsplash, twice! Once because of color, and the second time because the edges on the tiles weren't true, and the grout line could not be made straight.

Had to go ahead and have the cabinets painted because the old pickled finish looked totally terrible with the new countertops/backsplash. That was in the plan, I had just hoped it would be a gradual expense rather than an all-at-once expen$e! While I would love to have brand new custom cabinets, that was just not possible for me. The old ones are wood...just ugly wood. Now they look great!

Then I decided the dishwasher (original to the house...appx 17 yrs.) looked ugly and stuck out too much. Knew the microwave didn't look so great, but was going to live with it...and then it croaked.

I had only minor sink and cook-top drama...just expect some glitches here and there. Guy didn't hook new disposal up correctly, and there was a leak...or could we say lake, under the sink.

So, I'm in the middle of this kitchen mess, and people at the office said, "let's have the Christmas party at your house." Now there had been a delay in completion, because the painter's son had to have emergency surgery, and he couldn't show up for several days. I understand the need to be with your child. Told my contractor about the party drama, and they worked magic! Got the cabinet doors and drawer fronts back in place, cleaned up the dust, and came back to touch-up and finish-up, days later.

I'm trying to get brave enough for some bathroom cosmetics...more on that, later.

My backsplash is rough cut stone, cann't think of the name of it, duh. In various sizes, colors. Decorator show me on my counter, when she brought the pieces, the other day, way she is going to use them, plus a diagram she had drawn on paper.

I think it is going to be rather nice :o) BETTER!

We made the decision to remodel our kitchen....and by the time the work was done, we had moved the entire kitchen by swapping a bedroom and the kitchen and gutting 1/2 of the main floor of our house. Start to finish, though, was "only" 4 months.

Does anyone watch the tv show where decoraters go into and
redecorate the home to make it sellable for $2000.00. I wished they would come to my house and fix it up for that price. lol!!!

Five years ago I had my upstairs bsathroom completely re-done. Estimated $20,000 but actual price ran to $26 K. Minor kitchen updates ran toO $6000. Not including the floor, another $800 for Marmoleum. and they kept the existing floor and sub-floor as a base. Marmoleum is basically a "clickable" system that floats over existing floor. Oh and for the kitchen update they kept the existing appliances. I can't imagine any project running undderr $5000. By the way, after the 2005 remodeliung projects, my Contractor retired to California. I joke he moved across country to get away from me. And what's that show Clubm mentions?

The show is called Designed to Sell on HGTV. The reason they can do it for $2,000 is because the labor is free.

I should of kicked myself for not paying for remodelinlg, $20,000 when I purchased, but I didn't have the bucks then.
My neighbord did, and his place is lovely.

Didn't even look at the door hinges and knobs when I was purchasing. Now I gotta pay $500 for the installing and the price of the hinges and knobs.
WHICH IS now sitting in a box in my living room.

Going with the levered knobs, hinges, a smokie silver. Will be nice.

I made Jerry put all new door handles, not knobs on all doors prior to moving in. I like the opportunity of opening a door with an elbow, when my hands are full. :)
