When I buy ground beef, I get the good stuff (at least 90% lean) because DH cannot tolerate any fat. It costs between $4-5 per pound. Outrageous, IMO.

When I make spaghetti sauce, I buy the 85% lean, and boil it to get rid of the fat.

Yep, I would have had price sticker shock as well. Haven't bought beef in years. DH won't eat beef or pork, DD doesn't even eat eggs or honey (she is vegan) and I just plod along. I'll eat it, but don't go out of my way to do so.

Yes! But...it really varies. One store had 5lbs for $8,75% lean. The same store had it in the butchers case for 93% lean $5 a lb. But......after 5pm, the stuff in the butchers case gets marked down to .99cents a lb, so it's fresh every day. :0) But.....there are no guarentees there's gonna be any left to mark down....

I noticed that all of the meat prices have gone up quite a bit at Publix. I usually plan meals around meats that are on sale and that's been hard to do, since even the sale prices are verh high!

Haven't bought beef in 25 years. I am surprised.

My husband has been grinding chuck steaks for years. Tastes delicious on the barbeque.

Moni, is honey considered to be an animal product because it's made by bees? I assumed vegans ate honey, but perhaps not.

Wanda, I highly recommend grinding your own. I've spoken before on this forum about how my dad turned his health around by giving up saturated fat in his forties (when he was practically crippled by angina) and living to be ninety. He always ground his own beef, trimming off every speck of fat first.

I've inherited his genes, and do the same thing. I used to use a meat grinder attachment on my KitchenAid mixer, but these days I just grind meat in small batches in my food processor.

A I described above, it's cheaper than buying ground beef, and you don't have to worry about the fat content.

I generally don't shop around too much, only 2 stores I frequent and both are family owned, not chains.

DH just had a beef butchered last month. I tried to talk him into selling half of it, but he insisted we keep the entire thing. Now that we've tried it, I'm glad he didn't listen! Good stuff...and very lean!

We don't eat a lot of meat, but hubby doesn't want to give it up completely. So, after the scandal about conditions on feed lots and factory farms, we switched to grass fed beef from a family farm. At least we know the cows have a decent life before they are killed. I order around 50 pounds of variety meats every 6 months and pay an average of $4.75 a pound for everything, from rib eye steaks to roasts to skirt steaks to lean ground beef.

I would never pay the price you quoted for beef. I normally can buy 80% for around $2 a pound. I prefer 80 because it makes a tastier burger.

we pay 2.89 a lb at sam's club for lean grd beef (10%)...i can't believe you found round steak that cheap...top sirloin when i do buy it, is around 3.98...but we don't have it often...i did find a piece in the freezer so am cutting it paper thin and stir-frying with veggies tonight...

Well - what did the photography folks think about the price of beef? I'll bet they were on the negative side too.

The prices here are pretty bad, unless you buy in bulk. Wegmans and Costco sell 6lb packs of 88-90% for $1.99. I can't stand to buy just a pound or two for $3.79 or up. I either split a pack with my mom or cut it into portions and freeze the rest.

Stapleface, I hope you get your cholesterol tested regularly. I'm serious! I cooked that 80/20 beef and refrigerated it. When took it out of the fridge I could hardly see the meat for all the white (fat) covering it. Some bodies can handle that much fat, but many (most) can't.

We eat a lot of ground beef and I buy it here at Smith's(Kroger).I always get the 85/15 and pay $1.98 a lb. for the family pack most of the time.They always have really good specials and sometime if I get there at the right time the meat ground that day is marked down even more.I stock up then.They also have great specials sometime on steak.usually Sirloin and London broil and I stock up on those too.
What I can't stand is getting those tiny little pieces of bone in a bite of meat.Ruins the whole burger for me.Don't have much of a problem with that with Smith's.
Someone had organic,grass fed beef on the local Craigs list a while back.You could get a half,1/4 or whole beef.I called about it and it would have cost about $9.00 a pound! Would have been nice but who can afford that!
Wish I had a way to grind my own.With the london broil and sirloin specials I can get,it would save a lot of money.

Susanjf, it's not unusual to find top round that cheap here. It goes on sale every so often, and when it does, I buy a quantity for the freezer. I don't eat a lot of beef anymore, but I do crave it at times, and that's actually my favorite cut.

I seldom cook ground beef. After all the food poisoning scares I'd buy a hunk and grind it myself. The 'Ground Beef' in any given package may contain beef from different sources. I don't buy precut 'Stewing Beef' either.

We've mentioned this on the forum before, but do you realize that Cheerios cost more per pound than meat? Oatmeal, anyone?

Alisande-No,don't have anything but one of those little cheapie chopper things.I have been seriously considering buying a cuisinart or something like that but I have so little counter space here.
