Help - Bedroom in Dining room - Pics

Moving from a home to a 800 s.f. rental apartment has been challenging and I need more help. It may sound wierd but we switched the dining room/office/craft room with the bedroom. We have been living with it for 4 weeks and like it. But we are now moving in 2 days (don't ask) to the same layout but 5 miles away. I am allowed one painted accent wall and had paint made one shade darker than my bedspread. My question today is about drapes but let me show a few pics of my plan.

This is the fabric I plan to use for panels. I'm actually going to use 2 tablecloths and hang them on clips and a thin bronze rod just like pipdog did with her new fantastic orange duvets. They rod will be installed just below the crown moulding.

The white faux blinds will stay and be closed at night but I want to be sure of privacy which is why I'm chosing panels that will easily open and close. I think they will look crisp with the colors of the room.

My problem? I don't know how far to install on the left and right of the set of the windows. Here are the details:

The tablecloth is 70"x 120". The windows from outside edge to edge is 76". The entire wall is 11' (132") so that leaves a space of about 28" from the edge of each window to the adjoining wall. Most of the time the panel will be pulled open to let in as much light as possible. I would like to put small pics or something on the sides of the panels.

So any suggestions? Also, how far apart do I put the clips? I will have to hem the bottom and/or fold over at the top because they are so long (as is this post). P.S. I REALLY hate moving.

I recently put up some dropcloth curtains for a similarly sized window in a similarly sized space in my DS's room which will double as a guest room when he is away at college. I used 6x9 dropcloths so my curtain width is very similar to yours. I am linking the thread below as I think it may give you some ideas about how to hang your drapes.

I would recommend having the WTs stack back to the walls to either side. Mine below are a 18" stack with about 2" overlapping the window edges. Clip rings are sold either in packages of 7 or 10 so I considered that when deciding the spacing between the clips, which in my case amounted to 7.25" as I used 15 rings per side with one left over ring. I determined this measurement by spacing the rings out equally along the width of the curtain. Part of it is just how many rings you want to see on the rod.

If you want to have two matching stands on each side just get two baby dressers like the third photo. They are 36" like you are looking for. They won't clash with the full size dresser you already have. Oak baby furniture is not as common so you will have to do more Googleing to find them. I would not put a solid black or white painted ones in the space. To harsh with oak. If you want to do a painted piec get one with an oak top to blend it in a bit with the oak you have. I think a deep painted color like the second photo could bring in some pop to the room but NOT with two of them painted the same color. That would be overkill. If you are putting a nightstand in front of the window you should stick with swag valances. Swag valance would look cute on the window by the chair. The comforter looks like it leaves a gap at the bottom and does not hit the siderails. I thought it might be the wrong size. I had to live with a full size comforter on a new queen size bed for a long time until I had the money for a queen size one. I thought maybe you were just using this one until you found the right one for the new bed. One thing to consider when shopping for a queen size comforter is that even though is says 'Queen' on the label it may not be the right dimension for the new deeper mattresses they sell now days. Something to look out for when ordering online or through a catalog. Check the measurements. They can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Black with oak top dresser nightstands also available:

Believe it or not, decent looking ceiling fans exist. On every design show I've ever seen they're the first things to be thrown out, but I have them in every bedroom. Mmm slight draft at night without the sound of floor fan... I pspent no fewer than 18 weeks looking (off and on) for a "pretty" one to go in my master. I have lived with a 4 poster bed. My experience - unless you have really high ceilings, and I'm talking like 10 ft, and a sizeable room, it will turn your space into... tiny. Once upon a time in a previous life I thought I had a big bedroom until I put a poster bed in there. I like your computer nook. I always wanted a space like that, which I could separate from the rest of the room with some romantic drapery tied back. I might force that idea on my formal dining room. :) beds/headboards coverin ga window do bother me. I don't like anything to cover a window (couch, table, or otherwise) -- but that's just me. And if it came down to a queen bed, or covering that window, sure - the window would get covered! We have single panels on our two bedroom windows, mostly because they're skinny and it looked silly to me to have two panels. If you need to cover the window, something that seems to help (at least when I've seen it done) is to pull the bed away from the wall a foot or so. Then you can go with two panels, and it looks kind of intentional instead of "didn't have space." Something else to keep in mind with blocking windows -- does the sun come directly in such that it would fade your bedding over time?

whenicit, Thanks, but I need LOTS of help! The other advantage to the 2nd layout in BR1 is that the headboard is rather high and if I put it along the wall, it won't block the windows which would probably be better. I'll see about adding seating when I get the beds assembled. We may have room and it would give me a project to scour antique shops. That is what I'm planning on doing for a nightstand in the second bedroom. A little shabby/chic, beachy. I was going to look through some "Real Simple" magazines for inspiration. I'm not sure exactly what I want yet, but I though a "weathered" table, perhaps in a fun color, would go nicely with the iron bed. ajsmama, Thank you for the suggestion on BR1. I agree that swaping the nightstand is much better. On BR2, I think I could move the dresser closer to the door. The only think I actually don't like about the dresser in that position in general is that I'm not fond of the look of it from the side, but no mater how far forward or backward it is, I'm going to have that problem... Hello! I would love some suggestions for two large rooms in our house. I would like to add area rugs and curtains in both rooms. My taste is on the traditional side. I have found options online, but am nervous about mixing colors and patterns. The dining room is in the center of our house. We have access to our backyard and kitchen through this room so it sees a lot of foot traffic. Our table is 8ft. I would assume a 9x12 rug is recommended? Low pile and indoor/outdoor compatible? We have a heavy duty mat on the patio for dirty paws and shoes. Should we do a 9x12 rug and an additional runner from patio door to kitchen entry? What kind of window treatment would be best for our single window and backdoor/window combo? Should the rod extend way beyond the door so the curtain slides all the way? Our bedroom is quite large and we have recently purchased a bed set, but I'm not sure if the layout works. A 9x12 rug would fit under the bed and both night stands would fit inside. If we placed a rug under the bed, would it look bare for the other half of the room to have nothing? What about a runner from the bedroom entry along the bathroom and closet door? I am open to moving the dressers around. The tall dresser could go on the wall to the right of the double window, I have a standing mirror in that corner now. The wide dresser is opposite the double window, and I plan on hanging the matching mirror above it. The giant dog bed in the corner can be moved too ;) The rug pictured below is an option for the bedroom from wayfair(customer review pic) I am struggling with the idea of patterns or bold colors in the curtains or area rug. If the rug has a pattern, would it clash with our duvet styles that we change frequently or if we had curtains with a color other than ivory? I have found some toile and soft floral patterns that are beautiful. Would it be safe to choose an ivory or linen type curtain so it is an easier match? Your suggestions are welcome!

I forgot to mention that I had folded over the tops of the dropcloth and ironed them. It gave a bit of added stiffness at the top which I think makes them drape well. No sewing, no muss.....

Valinsv, thank you for the detailed information. A few weeks ago I actually forwarded your original post to several friends, I was so impressed how your room turned out. Today I was able to find the tablecloth at 70x104" which will probably give me just a couple inches to iron over at the top. I am going to play around with the rings tonight to see how the spacing works as you suggested, but we haven't put the rod up yet. I really don't think I want a 30" stack on each side, I like seeing some wall as you have shown, but I'm not sure how much. Do you close them and if so, do you have to do a lot of tweaking to get them back to looking like your pictures? My fabric is lighter weight than dropcloth so I'll have to see how it drapes.

Alyssak, the "cool" part is that I can close the door on all the office/crafts clutter and it looks more like a small studio apartment.

I agree that a 30" stack is way too much. I like about a 15-18" stack in general. I would play around with it, but perhaps put the brackets of the rod about 12" in from each wall might be a good starting point which would give you 16" for the stack on each wall with any extra going over the windows. Since you will open/close the drapes realistically your stack will vary slightly. I don't open/close mine, but if I did the folds would not look as nice as in the pictures, but I still think it's a good look, just a bit less "dressed". However, you may not even need to close them. Have you tried closing your binds by making them slant up instead of down? I do this on all my wood blinds and get pretty good room darkening and privacy that way.

Val, I put one panel on the rod last night and I think that because it is so lightweight that it isn't going to make a very wide stack. I guess it will still work ok, and I'll know better after I get the rod actually installed. We do turn the blinds but every once in a while one might get out of place and because we have so much foot traffic outside the window, I want complete privacy at night.
Here is a picture of the model dining room. I'm guessing my drape will be similar in stack width but I will move it outside the window a bit more. This pic looks like it covers more window than wall. Sorry it's a bit out of focus.

Those are very pretty drapes in the example pic, though I personally like to see it a bit fuller and it doesn't look like enough to close the drapes.

Doing the math I am not sure you will have enough width to achieve the look you want.

If window is 76" then say you install 12" outside windows to stack back on the wall to either side that is total width of 100". With two 70" panels that will be total drapes of 140". From what I've read, it's best to have at least double the width for the WTs--at least 200" or more. You may want to consider doing two panels per side, esp. as you said they are lightweight. Is there some reason that you wish to use tablecloths as curtains? They are not lined as pipdog's duvets are. You may want to rethink that idea, perhaps switching to either a heavier weight fabric, something lined or using a duvet like pipdog did.
