Cup pull installation - will this be a problem?

just received our hardware - Stone Mill hardware including a lot of cup pulls. I just noticed the installation - there are little knobs on the back that I assume will require drilling pretty large holes into our drawers. Is this a common way to have to install cup pulls? Here's a pic from Overstock, ours are a different finish but you get the idea.

This is how mine were installed ... it's just a bigger hole to drill in the cabinets, which isn't a great thing, but as long as you're committed to the hardware then it's no big deal.

I had ordered a sample of a square knob that I was considering. It had two projections on either side of the screw hole that would have made indents into the wood when the screws were tightened ... their function was to keep the square knobs in place so they wouldn't tilt one way or the other and would always be straight. However, as sailorgirl points out, some hardware requires a bigger "commitment" than others. I wasn't sure if I'd like the square knobs in the long term, and having those indents in the wood might limit my choices should I decide to change them out.

Tad it isn't recommended to put a vapor barrier between the floor and subfloor in a crawlspace installation. Reason being is if there is humidity beneath the crawlspace then the subfloor is going to expand and move the wood floor in a panelized effect anyway. The vapor barrier should go on top of the ground under the crawlspace. It should cover 100% and it should be black plastic not clear. Black plastic keeps any vegetation from growing under the barrier. Get that covered and keep running the dehum unit until it is bone dry under there. Only after it is dry and you've given the wood floor 2-3 months to relax can you attempt a fix. Anything prior to that and you could cause additional problems. Call me if you want to go over it. Installing Cup Pulls on Freezer Drawers

Another thing to think about is you can open the freezer drawers with your hand facing down (knuckles toward the drawer front) vs having to reach way down and turn your wrist to be able to use the cup pulls. Sounds like a small point, but think about it. I like reaching for that bottom drawer's handle from the top, it would have made me crazy to have to access it from underneath. Just my opinion. the cup handles do look nice though... ;-)

Hmm. The cup pulls look too big for the drawers, but it's hard to tell from here. I think all is not lost, but you do have to stop that guy with the drill from doing anything else. :) The cup pulls aren't too badly located because (1) you'll be looking more down onto them and (2) there's room to get your hands inside them like this. BUT! you're definitely not the first person who has had this problem with cup pulls. I think a pull manufacturer could make a killing with cup pulls that had their screws somehow in the middle instead of the bottom so people could use centered holes. Anyway, go shopping. Find something you like that looks good in the middle. Even if you're stuck with these, which you aren't, it's going to look good. These are not that bad! For the record, cabinet guy deserves a kick in the uh shin for over ruling your request for two pulls in a drawer. It would NOT be too busy and he needs to learn to politely offer up a differing opinion. Either way is fine with those drawers. (Okay--if those pulls he initially installed are as frilly as you say, maybe two WOULD be too busy!) You're just going to have to pick your own pulls and personalize the place. Try to have fun!

How does it feel to use cup pulls or ring pulls on cabinets?

Thanks all - I was thinking the cup pulls for the laundry room. I just like the traditional look of them. We will have a laundry hamper thing that pulls out, and a 4 drawer base (18" drawers). There is a sink between them, with 2 doors below. I was thinking the cup pulls could be on the pull out hamper and the drawers, regular knobs on the doors. Knobs on the uppers. But we are tall so not sure if thats the right thing. The ring pulls were for the kitchen, we have a bar/coffee area that has two doors above it, I was thinking of trying ring pulls there as a little special point of interest. But, thinking about it, I can see that having the ring bang into the cabinet all the time might not work so well. This is where the coffee and booze will be kept, so it will be a busy cabinet! We are doing both the kitchen and the laundry at the same time so its hard to juggle so many decisions!

The very similar Amerock cup pulls that I have on my printer stand are the same. It has to be this way because there is no depth at that point on the front for the screw threads to go into. To have the necessary depth without a projection, the screws would have to be moved toward the center of the cup where they would reduce the amount of finger space. The projection allows the screw threads space to grab onto the pull in the wall of the drawer allowing the body of the pull in front of the drawer face to be thin.

It isn't a significantly greater commitment than other pulls. If some time in the future you wanted to replace these pulls with something with the same screw placement but no projections, plugs could be glued into the big holes and a smaller hole for the screw drilled into the plugs. The body of the new pull would probably cover the plug since any screw is going to need something about that wide to screw into.

thanks! All the little things you don't consider. like the fact that our light fixture shades are too shallow for 100w CFLs.
