I vote yes on topiaries. I love them. I also love the center round table with the flowers on it.

I think you're going to have an awkward situation with the closet doors if you use topiaries or large vases. I think I'd look for two pieces of art to hang on the wall on either side of the door.

Here are some things you could do and still open the doors:

You could google "entry mural" and hit "images" and I'll bet find more. You could also hang LONG tapestries down on either side of the door. And you could do framed artwork/plates/musical instruments/etc. on the wall. Or, just do the topiaries and move them (put them on wheels?) when you need to open those side doors?

Actually, with an entry like that I would consider doing a slight remodel and change the door to a double door entry. If not, I think you should explore some art and paint colors.

When the closet doors are open there is 2 1/2 feet between the end of the door and the window. So I think a topiary, vase or small table wouldn't be in the way.

I actually prefer the single larger door (it's almost 4ft wide and over 8ft tall) rather than double doors. I like the look of the single door for wreaths better also.

I think the foyer would be more striking if painted a color, rather than the pale neutral it is now. It would make the moldings pop and you might not even want or need anything then. Your foyer is lovely and the round table is to die for. I love that look.

I'm picturing the wall with the door painted some color and art on either side of the door. Or mirrors. My hubby says you should always have a mirror by the door so you can check yourself on the way out :-)

I suppose you could do some really great art work on each side of the door.

Since we can't see a little further to the right and left, this might be a ridiculous comment, but I wonder why the doors are where they are and not around the corner. That would have made those corners so much more useable. But, as I said, I have no idea what is there, so that might be a really dumb idea anyway.

I also thing a different color on will also really help fill the space. But I do love your cream/ivory color--that is what I'm searching for right now.

You might already do this in the Spring, but this year it finally dawned on me...go outside and clip a few of the blooming trees' branches and put them in a big vase. These looked great! And free! (The dogwoods lasted longer than any of the different cherry trees.) They would really look fantastic on that round table.

I would keep it simple since you have a very dramatic staircase and open area right after the entry. I agree with artwork opinions and see how you feel(if you go that route) after that. I don't personally feel its an area that requires many items in it because of all you see after entering it. I think the rug seems a little large for the entry and maybe is making you feel that because of it you need to decorate it more as though it were a room.

Purchasing something 'grand' is the usual answer to many decorating questions. However the most successfully decorated homes have personal touches that are unique, or have meaning to, and reveal something about, the people who live there. One idea is to use photos or paintings of places you have visited on either side of the door. Depending on their size you might use 3-5 vertically on each side or more in a mini-gallery style. You needn't completely fill the space but use frames that are large enough to make a visual impact. Tape out the area with masking tape, then stand back to view, to see how large the grouping should be. Alternatively you may have some type of collectible suitable for public viewing that could be framed. I don't recommend using family photos or personal awards as they are usually more of a personal interest but framed vintage/antique items such as maps, record albums, letters, pieces of handwork, book covers, or anything that interests you or people who live in this home. Not all frames need be rectangular, some could be oval or round. Using items of a personal nature that bring back pleasant memories enriches our lives, which is what our decor should do for us. It shouldn't be only about impressing those who visit us.

I like the palace vase ideas. I wouldn't mind seeing sconces high on the wall on either side either.

My first thought was a little more color on the walls so that there is more contrast for the trim.
Next, I can see some pretty sconces to provide low light at night. They would function as usable art.
I also like a mirror near the front door to see if ones hair is ok or clothes are on straight. A long thin mirror on each side could be nice with the sconces installed inside them possibly. The mirrors would also help light to bounce around the space.
