Having to buy a new pump, any suggestions?

We bought our house in July of 07 and the one thing we wanted was an inground swimming pool. We were going to leave the swimming pool open during the winter but the pump started making some horrible noises. I got my pool company to come out and they are closing the pool down for me. The pool guy says that the motor is going out on the pump. A new motor is about $300 but for about $100 more I can get a new pump. The one I have now is a Century (I think) and he suggested the Stay Rite or Sta Rit 1 1/2 hp. I was not going to put a cover on the pool but he says that I need to because if the weather gets warm then I will get algae growing. So, do I need to cover it? What pump would everyone suggest I look into buying? I was thinking I could probably buy one off the internet cheaper than buying from the pool company. Suggestions, please!!!!!

I question the $400 1.5HP pump? Seems like a cheapy. Make sure it is not the StaRite DynaGlas. You'll be buying another real soon.

You have all kinds of options and budget will dictate where you go. Two-speed? Variable speed? Type of pool? Plumbing config?

Two years ago on my old pool,I had to replace my Jacuzzi
2hp Magnum (housing got porous).I bought a Pentaire Whisper
flow 1hp EE for under $400. on internet.
Wow what a difference! It was way better than the loud noisey elect hog J.Even the flow was increased with the
smaller pump. Pentair Pumps thumbs up!
On the new pool they used StaRite 1hp.They said StaRite is
owned by Pentair and so far it has been fine.

Buying New plants for Spring, any suggestions?

Hi Bill, I have puu kahea, one of my 3 yr old plants, forgot it.. Had 6 make it from the freeze. I have small 2 yr olds, penang peach, kimo, plus the sinagapores and dwarf delicious. Have a mystery cutting with deep green red leaves, red edges..hope thats a red. I have transplanted all my plants, as advised on the board..nervous time, but did it. All my three yr old plants, large singapore, and a mystery large 9 tip white cutting from last year are in 7 gallon containers. Rest in 5 and 3 gallon, some in 1. Aztec gold is in the ground..what a job..trimmed a couple and put them back in 5 gal. I have Lots of whites given to me, guess white, are mystery until they bloom. Have a neighbor that is a gardner. I realize now I have 3 rainbows, nebels, california sally and puu kahea. And as you said, I haven't seen any of these personally bloom, except daisy. its a wow. Will check out the ones you mentioned. Maybe I have these colors in my plants and just don't know. Am limited in my funds.. so want to get what I can for summer growth. You mentioned Teresa Wilder in one of your messages..(I copy paste)..is it better than some you mentioned or not? Don't think I have a big rainbow knock out..or do I? Karen B.

If you read the form "Nonbusiness Energy Property Credit You may be able to take a credit of 30% of the costs paid or incurred in 2009 for any qualified energy efficiency improvements and any residential energy property. The credit is limited to a total of $1,500 for tax years 2009 and 2010" The people that just filled in $1,500 for the credit may be asked to provide additional documentation as tax forms are reviewed. You can take the chance of IRS catching the error or do it correctly the way your accountant tells you. I say bravo for the accountant. If you paid $5,000 for the system you might be able to claim the full amoung.

Sounds like a good plan. Food processors are pricey, and it's a good idea to try one out for a minimal amount of money before investing in one. You may find you wouldn't use it enough to make it worth it. I love my food processor, but I don't bother with it for small jobs. I can dice up a single onion and a couple of carrots fast with my knife and cutting board, with less to wash up. However, for large meals and putting extra food up, the food processor saves a lot of time. I want to put some apple slices in the freezer for future pies, so my food processor gets used for things like that, or if I'm making a huge pot of sauce and need several onions chopped. It also wonderful for grating cheeses, so I'll usually grate a lot of cheese at once and then store it in the fridge so it's handy. I'd be interested in hearing how you like a mandolin. And good luck with your food processor search. If you can find one of the old original Cuisinart's in good shape, you'd have yourself a good food processor. Newer isn't always better. I found an old Hobart built dishwasher in wonderful shape and got rid of my new one. Nothing cleans dishes as well as the older KitchenAids. I can handle the noise. In 45 minutes I have spotless dishes with no crud on them.

Thanks for responding. My pool is an inground liner pool. It is approximately 20' x 40', 3 feet deep to 8 feet deep. The pump we have now has a sticker on it that says Hayward but then it also says Century Centurian.

We just bought this house in July and the pool is 2 years old. I was told the other day by a neighbor that the previous owners just put a new motor on the pump last year. So, there is something definitely wrong with this pump. I think that I just want to go ahead and buy a new one. But, which one? I called another local pool company and they recommended a Hayward. The pool company that came and did the closing recommended a Sta Rite.

Do I need a 1 1/2 hp or a 1 hp? I have a sand filter if that helps.

I had a sta rite 1 hp as a service pump and went to a hayward northstar 1.5 hp. Big improvment! Quite ... Strong. I recently added a pump for the spa I was thinking about going with one of the Intella-flow pumps from Pentiar, but Ive been so happy with the northstar , I decided not to chance it. Why argue with sucess.

If your pool is only 2 years old and has no spa I'd encourage you to just take the easy out and replace your motor with an affordable replacement of a reduced horsepower.
A good rule of thumb is 6 amps for 3/4hp, 7 amps for 1hp, and 8 amps for a 1 1/2hp. This will vary from one manufacturer to another.
Of these motors the most electrically affordable and effective for your sand filter will be the 3/4hp.
You can save money over the long run with either a 2-speed replacement motor or a variable flow pump/motor.
These will cost more, especially the variable flow.

You should question your man on prices.
His price on the replacement motor is high and his cost on a replacement pump assembly is low.
