Buying New plants for Spring, any suggestions?

Hi,

I am trying to keep building my plumie collection mostly from recommendations on here, ones that seem todo well in my area.(love the comment, prolific bloomer! Ha)

I won a India cutting from Hawaii Sandy, was so big, am pleased; from MG have bought 2 nice cuttings jeannie Morange Jr. (big thick one) and Paul Weissich (yellow) has inflo coming! 3 weeks ago, two mystery cuttings came with them. From FC -(Bill) found California Sally grafted! bought it looked all last year, could not find one, large plant. and a dwarf pink singapore also grafted..Amazes me something that small can grow, very tiny plant. so Have 6 cuttings going, hope they leaf out and make it. also have a red white cutting going, not real big.

My red-white is leafing out Bill, was concerned froze on patio. At this moment do not see any evidence of inflos, sure hope it blooms like last year, hope freezing doesn't stop the bloom. Heidi, put it in the ground had massive roots, 7 yr or older. Last year only one small inflo, looked at it appears 5 inflos so far are coming on the tips!!! YAY. Have 12 tips on this one. looks like it did well in the cold! amazes me.

Last year I bought jeannie morange jr rooted from MG. Took 3 months to come out of dormancy, finally small leaves then went dormant, has not came out yet. So bought a new cutting hope it will bloom. Want so bad to see what this flower looks like.

So..ha I don't know what else to buy, isn't that dumb to say.. got a pretty good mix. Hoping for the 3 yr old plants, daisy wilcox, aztec gold (has a inflo!), pacific pearl and Plastic pink and playful, to bloom.. course 2 yr olds too!! Nebels rainbow bloomed last year, hope repeats. celadine is still in tight dormacy.

Have I missed a good one? Still have some money left.

Sounds like your woes over watering & feeding the plants too early are over!! Very nice :) As for your question, I think it would depend on what excites you the most. As for me, I am always looking for different colors and shapes that I don't already have, and I tend to lean toward the reds and rainbows. I have to say that I am esthatic (sp?) about the Princess Victoria I won from HawaiiSandy. To date, it is by far the fastest rooting cutting I have ever had! Anyway sweet lady, go with your heart and pick out something that you know you will appreciate. Talk to you soon,

Karen- I suggest you look at various web sites that sell and have pictures of plumerias and then select some to ask questions about. It is hard to know what others like. There are many oldies that are still great looking and are common enough to keep the price reasonable (ie. Puu Kahea, Kaneohe sunrise or sunburst, J.L.Pink Pansy, Grove Farm, Gloria Schmidt, almost all Moragnes, etc.) whereas many of the newer models are quite pricey and although I have about 50 of them I still have only seen pictures so I cannot judge what the real flowers will look like. Over the years I have been quite disappointed with how my final flowers looked compared to the original pictures in many cases. I think Freak-4-plumerias has one of the best collections as well as Bud Guillot and both have expressed the same feeling of buying something that does live up to the hype. Thus if you ask about specific names, chances are someone will have a comment. Bill

Not sure what you're referring to as "plant events" but there's the Cincinnati Civic Garden Center Spring sale in late April or early May, The Cincinnati Flower show in late April at Coney Island, Boone County Arboretum has a Spring Sale in May(you should find info on all these using Google)And the Cincinnati Home and Garden show at the convention center downtown in early March. Kousa dogwood do well in your area and I would recommend a site that provides afternoon shade and routinely moist soil. They will tolerate some drought conditions, but they don't like that situation. Here's some nurseries and garden centers in the Cincinnati area I have been to and recommend Natorps is good and the KY facility will have about everything the Ohio one has. Lakeview GC & Nursery on Rt 127 north of I-275. White Oak GC at 3579 Blue Rock Road. Delhi GC on Northwood near Tri-County Mall. Sharon Nursery out by Kings Island and along I-71. There's a couple greenhouses on Gray St along the northeast side of Spring Grove Cemetery. Rahn's is one of them. And be sure to drive through the cemetery while you're there. Go in the spring(mid-May) when the pink dogwoods are blooming. More Specialty Plants on Mckeever Rd. Take Rt 32 east form the east side of Cincinnati out past Williamsburg, go across a river and McKeever is the next right. They have a lot of unusual plants. There used to be a Franks Store on Rt 18 across from the Florence Mall that always had decent plants, but they may not be in business anymore

The MTPS will be on Saturday, May 16th at 9:00. You can check out our website at http://www.midtnplantswap.com/. It is about 140 miles from Chatt. The KPS is in Knoxville but I'm not sure of the date. Their website is at http://www.knoxplantswap.com/. They are about 110 miles from Chatt. The MPS is in Memphis and I'm not sure of their date either but they are about 350 miles from Chatt. You guys really need a swap in Chatanooga!!!

A 2x2 pot doesn't leave much room for roots, so these sound like barely rooted cuttings. I wouldn't expect them to have enough reserves to survive the winter in a dark spot like your garage. If you have an empty garden spot where you can plant them, that is one possibility, and they can continue on growing until it gets really cold in your area. Or a cold frame would work for them or a grow light set up indoors or in the garage. Regardless, you will need to replant them into larger pots if they won't be in the ground. Or wait until next spring. I don't know what vendor you are using, but there are many reputable vendors of clematis and they all sell plants in the spring. Before ordering, you might want to look up other gardener's evaluations of the vendor you are planning to use on the Garden Watchdog to see if plants that small have a chance of thriving.

I have puu kahea, one of my 3 yr old plants, forgot it.. Had 6 make it from the freeze. I have small 2 yr olds, penang peach, kimo, plus the sinagapores and dwarf delicious. Have a mystery cutting with deep green red leaves, red edges..hope thats a red. I have transplanted all my plants, as advised on the board..nervous time, but did it. All my three yr old plants, large singapore, and a mystery large 9 tip white cutting from last year are in 7 gallon containers. Rest in 5 and 3 gallon, some in 1. Aztec gold is in the ground..what a job..trimmed a couple and put them back in 5 gal.

I have Lots of whites given to me, guess white, are mystery until they bloom. Have a neighbor that is a gardner. I realize now I have 3 rainbows, nebels, california sally and puu kahea. And as you said, I haven't seen any of these personally bloom, except daisy. its a wow.

Will check out the ones you mentioned. Maybe I have these colors in my plants and just don't know. Am limited in my funds.. so want to get what I can for summer growth.

You mentioned Teresa Wilder in one of your messages..(I copy paste)..is it better than some you mentioned or not? Don't think I have a big rainbow knock out..or do I?

Yes, seems its pulling together..Now if it just will get warm at night, bringing in my cuttings, out in..ha would help, ha. In low 50's now, that helps with the other plants. Most are still dormant.

Being I have not seen so many plants bloom to compare, not sure what I have.. I am trying to look at pictures and get round ones, longer ones, etc..My red, kimi beauty died got too cold one night dried up. I think the only red pink ones I have are jeanne jr, not sure. What ones do you like in this family? found out that maui gardens uses paypal, thats way too easy to buy.ha Didn't seem that FC uses paypal..Hawaii Sally is good, but pricy.

Out of the reds, I love Hilo Beauty - (and MPG sells them.) It's kind of leggy, but mine bloomed last year longer than any other plant. Great keeping quality. Had an inflo on Morgan's Midnight Ruby but it fell off, so still haven't seen that one bloom.

On your reds. Are the leaves different than non reds? I have one mystery cutting from last year MG.. the foilage is med dark green, dark red veins on the back, and cast of red/coppery on the leaves..red margins. Now is that a red one perhaps or orange? Or pretty leaf..ha Doesn't look like any of my other plant leaves. Hope it blooms to see what it is..
