Lady Luck & My New (to me) Bar Cart

Yesterday my dh and I were out, we stopped by local consignment store looking for the elusive chairs for the dining room. And what was right in front of me when I walked in? A bar cart. A chrome and brass really groovy vintage bar cart. It glides along like nobody's business too....

I've been looking for one, always so highly priced. You know me, it's got to be a bargain. Price tag said $65, I looked twice to make sure there wasn't a 4 in front of it, but nope, $65. Deal of the day. Brought it home, got out the BKF, polished it up and wham bam thank you m'am

It's nice that the coffee table has company now.

I had to laugh at 'relaxing and reading the book' statement too. I love to read, but it would take about two years to get through a book in my garden. I try, then I notice a spent bloom that needs deadheading. I sit back down, oops, there is a weed.... I have Disneyland and it is a beauty, but it does need to be sprayed or you will have black spot. Regarding spraying, be sure that your roses are well watered at least a couple of hours prior to spraying and don't spray in the hot sun, I find that morning works best for me after I watered well late afternoon the day before. I have found the organics work much better as fertilizer. Also be sure to water the entire bed, not just near the rose bush. The roots grow out quite far, watering close up won't get to them. Water well. I have found that many of the David Austin roses do well in the heat and hold up better than most, especially Mary Magdeline, Sophy's Rose, LD Braithwaite and Ambridge Rose. I also find it helpful to pay close attention to zones when people post here. While I agree with everything written on this post, it is all universal, many things are regional. I know this is an old post, but I'm curious: are you sure the ants themselves are the ones causing the damage? Most Passifloras live in a mutually beneficient relationship with ants: the ants eat the nectar produced by the plant, and in turn remove the eggs of pests that would harm the plant. A quote from the link below: "Incidentally one of the signs of a happy plant is armies of ants marching up & down it. They are attracted by the nectar & have a protective role re disposing of other insects' eggs etc." There are a few ants that do cause harm by farming the pests themselves: they'll purposely plant the eggs of scales, mealy bugs, and other beasties on the plant, and then tend to them, so it is certainly possible that the ants could be introducing other pests to your plants. But I haven't heard of any ants themselves causing the damage that you're describing. (Which doesn't mean it's not possible, of course -- I'd just hate to see you work hard to rid your plants of ants, if the ants, in fact, would remove the other pests on their own if left alone.) Thanks for all your comments. Here is what we did. We went over and looked at her situation. I kind of took control of the plan, which was to get the main floor machine out and bring the old Maytag up into its spot. I didn’t care too much what it looked like. We got there and I started cleaning up the old Maytag and DS and DS2 got the old one loaded into the truck. There was a fair amount of rust on the bottom sides of the machine. It has a suds saver option. We hose clamped a plug into the suds hose that she haven’t used in 26 years. Put new h/c hoses on and used the drain hose from the whirlpool to drain. The toe kick is somewhat rusted and visible. I thought some contact paper would cover that up, like white or black. outa here: To reclaim a place of honor: MIL was so relieved to have this machine upstairs. She was going up and down the basement stairs for the last 2 months! It was dangerous and really taking its tol emotionally. I felt so good that we were able to remedy this situation without buying something that she wouldn’t be happy with. She was just assuming that she needed new. She loved it as we ran an empty cycle to see how it was working in its new location. The levelers have long been rusted stuck, but there was no rocking so I hope it can take a load of clothes without walking. Thanks again for you comments and support. One happy Grandma.

You know, I'm sitting here debating about whether to take a little trip to my favorite consignment shop (we are at our beach house where the weather is more like March than May) and that's it, I'm going!

I should have known you'd have fine taste in hootch ...

Make mine a Maker's Mark with three ice cubes and a splash of branch water ...

But on the topic, what a score!

After cleaning with BKF, I like to polish brass with a little Maas metal polish on a bit of old T-shirt, and a final polish with a bigger rag.

I'm so glad you like it. I should mention that the bottles are mostly the Costco size ones, just to give you an idea of the space for the lower shelf.

And did you notice the groovy glasses on the top shelf? I had to stop at Salvation Army on the way back to the cave after capturing this little baby. I found so many cool old bar glasses. I already had the frosted Tom Collins ones, but the frosted and silver ones on the right (pilsner style and the rocks glasses) were the ones I picked up.

Oh, and I should mention that while I was at SA I also found a faux bamboo chair by Hickory Chair. (not like the other faux chippendale chairs) I want to reupholster it and use it for a desk chair upstairs. It was $15. I think I could have waited for Monday to buy it at 1/2 price, but you know, someone else may have scooped it up. ;-)

Beautiful! You find some amazing pieces! Consignment shops and thrift stores around me seem to attract vintage sagging 80's things and plastic. So glad to see what someone with a great eye for decor can find!

Yes, bkw, where on earth do you live that the Salvation Army has such wonderful finds? Ours have mostly clothing, Elvis genre "art" and that's the good stuff.

That bar cart is a marvel--- it is a perfect addition to your dr. Can we see a wider picture of it in context, please? I LOVE the sensibility your cool furniture adds your house.

And no overall pics yet. Room is now in a state of chaos since I need chairs and to style that table! Soon. Hopefully.

i have some cool frosted/patterned tom collins glasses and others that belonged to my parents-tucked away in a cabinet :( -- your collection looks great displayed on the cart!
and the cart fits in with your room perfectly!

Today began the sawing out of my concrete slab in the basement because the builder put in 3 2x6s instead of a metal support pole in one location. Yes, we caught it way back when...we were told "not to worry about it". However when the 2x6s started to bow one of the "good guys" nearly died this winter when he saw it. So, being that my nerves are as frazzled as they possibly can be at this point in the day (imagine the fire alarms going off because of gas powered saw and all the fumes) along with all the banging, etc....so, I'll be having something later from that bar cart. Neat. No diluting necessary. I feel like Granny from the Beverly Hillbillies..."I need my nerve medicine"
