I'm much happier with a pretty curtain than I ever was with those da** doors. You only get half a tub with doors for cleaning the tub or bathing kids, plus they are very high maintenance - squeegeeing after every drop of water! When we redid our bathroom, the contractor was aghast that I refused another set of doors, said it would lower the value of my house! Heck with that! I live here, if someday new people want to install doors, they can. I'll never go back.

I hope CLR works for you. It does a good job on chrome. (And sorry about my rant. I hope you find a good solution.)

The only thing I find to work is "The works tub & shower cleaner" Just squeeze it on then wipe it & rinse off. It says its for hard water stains, & calcium build up. You can find it at dollar general stores for less then $2.
I would rather wash a shower curtain also.

I use the Mr. Clean magic eraser....then window cleaner.

Living in an area with extremely hard well water, I used a tip from the cleaning forum here and when we had our showers installed, bought a small squeegee for each shower and still 10 years later, we have no water spots. The squeegeeing only takes a minute and it is just part of our shower routine now.

I also have clear glass doors in both our showers. My cleaning lady uses a paste of scouring powder like Comet mixed with CLR. She puts it all over the glass door and lets it sit while she goes and cleans the rest of the house. Then she goes back and cleans off the doors and wipes them dry.

We use vinegar/water with the Magic Eraser. Comes clean and no scratches.

I use a product called "Invisible Glass". Works great. We also use a squeegee. Our glass doors are folding ones and don't have a track so I dodged that one!

I had DH remove our glass doors. I'm much happier with a shower curtain. It was ridiculous, trying to keep those glass doors clean. And the tracks, what a mess!

I've never posted here befor, but I wanted to let you know that lemon oil will do the trick. Wipe it on the doors and then take something like Soft Scrub to it. When you've finished getting the doors clean apply a second coat of the lemon oil. The water should slide right off and will last for at least a week depending on how often you use the shower.

We have shower stalls with glass doors/walls in four of our bathrooms, so I have become an expert in this area! I use white vinegar (full-strength). Using it with a Magic Eraser (one of my favorite products) is good, but my preferred method is to spray on the vinegar, and use a razor-blade scraper to "scrape the scum off". I don't let them get bad, so it only takes about 15 minutes to clean the glass and it sparkles.

I occasionally use "The Works" that Joann recommended on tubs and the fiberglass shower walls, but I have to be careful with it because our showers have brass trim. One of my favorite products is "The Works" toilet bowl cleaner--it is fantastic! You can get "The Works" at Dollar Tree or Big Lots for $1.

And, while you are at Dollar Tree, don't forget to buy "Awesome" spray cleaner -- it will clean anything, and is far superior to Fantastic, Spic n Span, and all the other pricey cleaners.

After you get them clean, the squeege is a good idea but, I found this works better. I keep an old towel handy and after I turn the shower off I give the entire tub and door a wipe down. This takes care of the walls and tub/shower area as well as the glass doors. It only takes a couple of minutes and if you have extremely hard water, as I do, it only needs to be scrubbed with a toxic cleaner every few months. All that hard water residue builds up on the tub and walls as well as the glass doors. You just don't see it until it gets really bad unless your fixtures are a dark color.

our walk-in shower has a glass door. Like Tobyt we use a squeegee after every shower and I also keep a Miracle cloth in there and wipe down all the door and the chrome pieces after showering.Takes very little time. Never had any build up in 6 years we've had the door.

Whole house water softener unit?? I use to clean house for a couple that had a water softener and it helped with the hard water problem but doesn't keep the daily soap scum and deposits off the doors.I have also used Rain-X and it does help but like other remedies it doesn't solve the problem completely.Also,a thin coating of vegetable oil will help keep the glass clean once they are clean.Put a little on a soft rag and apply to the doors,metal too,in a circular motion then buff with a clean soft rag.You will need to do this every time you scrub your shower because just normal showering and wiping will remove it.It does work though if you want to go to the trouble.This also works on stainless steel sinks and appliances.

Like some of the others...I just use a squeegee, love the clear glass. It holds steam. We buy eucalyptus shower tabs for when we have a cold(they disolve on the shower floor)..never have to take a curtain down and clean it...it never interferes with decorating since it's clear.....:0)

I had glass doors when I rented apartments in CA. I hated cleaning the rails. Now that I own and have a shower curtain, I hate it also. It is dark inside the shower and try as I may, the water gets out at the front and now the wall needs repair. I would rather have the glass doors now.

We do have a water softener, and for 2 years we used a squeegee. I got rid of the squeegee and now use a "Micro-fiber" cloth and wipe down the shower. This is KEEPING it clean rather than having to scrub it. I just keep it hanging on the bar inside and throw it in the wash once in a while. I find this much easier then the squeegee. I can even wipe off the floor with my foot (and the cloth.)

Love shower curtains vs glass doors

Find the product called Spot-X at Home Depot or Lowes. It is WONDERFUL! CLR, vinegar- NOTHING worked for me. Give it some elbow grease and you'll dance a jig, LOL! Also, this may sound weird, but put a clear plastic curtain INSIDE of your shower to keep the water off the door. It's annoying, but until I found Spot-X, I had to do something, LOL.

I know what you mean. When I was married the house we lived in had the glass shower doors. Was happy to leave both.

Try the glass cleaner that's in a spray can and comes out foamy. That stuff hasn't failed me yet.

I appreciate all these great suggestions, my favorite being to have a cleaning lady worry about it :-)

I will definitely be trying these products and ideas.

A microfiber cloth is standard in my shower (love them for so many things!) and I agree it is easier than the squeegee (which is in the kids' shower, but never used).

And I've thought about the shower-curtain inside too, just never thought of "clear" - duh. Once I get these hard-water stains removed (keeping fingers crossed), I think I might go that route!

And, yes, we have a water softener. Our water source is well water, and I blame my bad-hair days, dry skin, and laundry-not-as-bright-as-my-childhood-days, all on our water.

On my list of deal-breakers if I ever were to have a "dream house" is to forgo well water -- yet I have spoken with well contractors (who have city water) who claim it would be their preference.

NEVER, NEVER EVER AGAIN will I have glass doors.

my hubster and I were just looking at shower doors last week for the boys bathroom...there is one there now installed by the previous owners and CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP...it takes an act of god to get the door open and the tracks are ICKY at best...so we're going with trackless and I will wax them with Gel Gloss before the first person takes a shower...and there is a squeegee in there that hopefully will get used...

I've got to go back up thru this post and write down all the great cleaners ya'll mentioned!!

When we rennovated our second bathroom we had a huge shower put in with enormous glass doors and surrounding wall. When it was all done my husband and I stood back and admired it and I told him if he uses it, he cleans it.

We both use the other smaller shower with the rain pattern glass which doesn't show water spots, and we store the cat carriers in the other. LOLOL!

When we remodeled our bathroom, I got rid of the shower doors and have a nice shower curtain I can just throw into the washer and dryer.

In our last house the test of broken shower glass safety was put to the test when my DH slipped and fell out of the shower, through the door. The glass was "rounded" but it was glass and he had a lot of small cuts on his backside.

I just ran a putty knife under my door seals and took the whole mess out! I used silicon and puttied up the screw holes and stuck a plastic cap on them. (The caps are the ones that cover nails in home assembly type furniture) I bought one of those "hotel" style rods that is curved so we have so much more room! NEVER again will I ever scrub shower doors!

My MIL uses a squeegee on her all original vintage 1948 glass shower door. They built the house and she has always used a squeegee. Her shower (tile too!) looks brand new. I'm always amazed how nice her shower looks after all these years.

I have an operating claw foot shower right now so I have three shower curtains to wash. In our new bathroom upstairs, our shower is a doorless/walk in. Now if we could ever get it finished...
