Looks like the glue came loose from the wall. I would ask the marble installer to come fix it. If he won't then get a competitor to come fix it. Modern construction adhesives should not come apart.

In the mean time, lift (rather than push) the door at the handle to open and close.

Our shower also has cultured marble. When it was put in I was told by the glass company that we could not have a frameless shower door due to not have sufficient material to fasten the hinges to. We were able to do a semi frameless door.

The shower installer should have installed blocking behind the walls where the glass would be installed. The weight of that door needs to be supported by screws into studs or blocking.

The Cook’s Kitchen, thanks for replying! So can this blocking be installed from the other side of this wall? This shower wall backs up to our bedroom, so we could open up the wall from the bedroom side. Would that make the fix possible without tearing the marble out?

Yes you can install blocking from behind. Some shower door installers can do that but most will not patch the wall. If you handy you can install the blocking yourself if not most handyman can do that or a contractor.

"What could cause this to happen?"

It's more an issue with the hinge screws not being anchored to the wall framing versus the marble not being properly installed. With the weight and moment of the door pulling on the upper hinge, and with the hinges only being secured to the "marble slab", it caused the slab to separate from the wall.

" How can it be fixed?"

As has been discussed,if you can add blocking from behind, do it. Reset the slab so it's tight to the backer, then run longer hinge screws through the slab and into the framing.

" Who should fix it?"

Your GC from the original build is responsible for the details, or in this case, the lack thereof. He should have seen this coming. Ultimately, the GC is responsible for the failure. The guy who installed the marble, it's really not his worry. The glass installer, he should have known that screws set only in a wall slab would not be sufficient long term. The failure is on the GC and the glass guy, partially on the glass guy for not raising an objection.

The repair? You'll want to hire someone new to install the blocking and repair the drywall. If your GC is still around, ring him up. Then have the glass guy back to properly anchor the hinges in to the new blocking.

Mongo CT, thanks for replying! We did not have a GC for this project. This was our first reno project on a 1973 brick ranch, our first home (and only) home purchase. We just updated the finishes,so didn’t really feel we needed a GC. We did the demo and had friend suggestions for contractors. This is just one of those things that slipped through the cracks. I’m not blaming anyone. Oversights happen. Thank you again for your reply! And thank you all for your help with this matter! The glass installer has said they’d be happy to come take down the glass door and then reinstall it once the problem has been fixed.The marble installer said he’d make sure the marble was reattached to the wall properly, and we got a quote on the blocker placement and drywall repair from a trusted contractor who helped with our great room/ kitchen Reno. Thanks again for helping me understand the cause of the problem and come up with a solution! This will be good as new ASAP!

At the risk of hijacking the thread, how do you like the Tyvarian, Mandy? Cleans easily? Scratches? Sounds like you've had it for a few years. I am considering it for shower surrounds (the marble looks incredibly realistic) but I can't find anyone saying anything about it on the interwebs, which concerns me a little. I would love your opinion!

I love the tyvarian! I chose it because I hate grout, love marble, but don’t like the maintenance of marble ( or cost). It is easy to clean and I don’t have to use any special cleaner! I use the Lysol all purpose cleaner and maybe a Mr. Clean magic eraser for dried on soap scum. It doesn’t scratch easily. You’d have to intentionally try to scratch it. I really don’t have anything negative to say about it. You still have to re-caulk it around the base where the shower walls meet the shower pan (we did an acrylic pan) every now and then, but you have to do that with anything. Also, the installer said you can take a regular buffer to shine it up if it loses its shine, but we haven’t had to do that.I asked specifically about this because we have “hard” water (well water). I would recommend it! I hope this helps!

Jmmcd3, I took some photos of my shower walls so you can see them. I needed to clean it first,lol. We did the Calcutta marble look. I think it’s beautiful! I included a couple of close ups too. I took these as close as I could so my phone could still keep it in focus. Good luck!

The lighting and my phone seem to be giving the walls a pinkish hue, but I don’t see it in real life.
