boy,when someone says "but it's a dry heat"... now I know what they mean.

Terrible thunderstorms, our plan had to circle for over an hour which made me more nervous to drive. thank goodness that the rain stopped when it was time for me to drive. (still wondering why peeps think western washington has bad weather! lol)

so hot .. how does anyone DO anything in this weather

thank goodness the stands have a cover on them. now I'm just worried about the drive back, the one that makes me most nervous! lol

we WON our first game yesterday! woohoo. I'm on my way out for the game today. It is against the home town team. I really hope we win. please cross your fingers. please!

gotta run... can't use this computer too long.

Kat.. who wouldn't mind if the temp dropped 25 degrees! lol

i think ya gotta get used to it...i know I sure enjoy your weather when i pop in and out of SEA...i guess peeps from florida go north in the summer to get out of it..

Hey Kat, Welcome to Florida!As long as you aren't playing against Titusville, I wii cross my fingers for you. The rain is supposed to be stopping until the weekend. You are just in time to meet our lovebugs too.Not fun. When we first moved up here from Miami, We thought there were a lot of burglars up here. People would be standing on the corner with bandanas covering there nose and mouths. Found out it was too keep the lovebugs out. Hope your trip improves and you can enjoy yourself.

I'm in Sacramento too. Our heat is intermittent, so just keep your plants growing and flowering. They may not set fruit during the heat spells, but if you have more flowers comming when it cools off, you'll get plenty of veggies. Just remember that we're very close to some of the best tomato production areas in the world. It's a good place to grow tomatoes. Eggplants and Peppers seem more shallow-rooted than tomatoes. They love the heat, but they do best with slightly more frequent water (and plenty of mulch). Here is a link that might be useful: My blog

Nice pad, estreya! Anyway, I'm gonna go out on a limb and give you a little word of caution... all compost is NOT created equal. Do you know what this compost was made from? It looks like possibly wood shavings and some kind of manure. That's fine for compost that has been completely digested and cured. But I'm looking at what appears to be a significant amount of uncomposted wood fibers. Tilling this into the soil MAY cause problems (or may not... that's the thing about unfinished compost - you never know for sure what the final product will be or how long it will take to get there). It's tempting to think that manure, with a low C:N ratio and wood shavings, with a high C:N ratio, would balance out into a nice happy mix. And in the long run they will. But in the short term, nitrogen levels can swing wildly. A worst case scenario would be that the high initial ammonia content burns existing plants, but then the nitrogen levels drop rapidly next spring and now you are nitrogen deficient. OTOH, a best case scenario is that the nitrogen stays put long enough for the wood to decompose and everything grows wonderfully. Probably the safest thing to do is to use it as a mulch instead of tilling it in. If you feel compelled to till it in, then just keep an eye on plant growth and see how they respond. If you're tilling this in for a garden next year, then burning won't be a problem. Watch instead for possible nitrogen depletion, and have a bag of blood meal or something like that on hand in case things look poosley. And don't worry - in the long run it will be fine. It will probably be fine in the short run too, but just be watchful. -Diggity

Three things that I note in professional/commercial greenhouses that I see lacking in most 'home' greenhouses (including mine) - 1. circulation (i.e. fans) 2. vents that are thermostat controlled 3. drip irrigation on timers. I'd look into the vent issue and see what the manufacturers set up their vents/thermostats at to get a flavor how much heat is too much heat. I just burned out a bunch seedlings in my greenhouse, as I had NO idea how hot it would actually get in there. My answer - really darn hot! Seems to me that tropical clumpers, on the whole, would love the warmth on the roots as well as the humidity, of a greenhouse. But care should be taken not to flood and drown the roots.

Hey Rob...thanks for the great welcome.. Ya know I thought about putting a feeder up..but it's so dang hot here I don't think they'd even want to buzz on by..although the breeze they'd create zooming in..might be a blessing LOL.. Anyway I did ask around and all here that "are in the know"...LOL said.."nope they is gone".. soooooo I'm just watching my other birds..and squirrels...with a few hawks..one that likes to sit on my roof of my car... Perhaps further south in Florida there might be some..I'm more central...actually Wildwood..perhaps someone on here might be able to tell me... Yooooooo hoooooooo anyone know ????? All eyes...:) Ok.. It seems that everytime I visit my sister in Florida there is a cool spell. I don't want to wear jeans and turtlenecks when I go there. I want shorts and to walk barefoot on the beach.

If you want hot.....go to Arizona!!!! OMG I never felt such heat. I told Jammer that no one better say, "But it's a dry heat" or I will slap them!!!

I hate the Florida heat!!! It is so humid that it is just like drinking the air. MaryAnn our weather isn't bad, hot yes but the humidity is so low that it is a dry heat. LOL I will take our hot dry weather any day over hot and humid.

Congratulations on the win Kat. I hope they win all their games.

LOL! welcome to summer in Orlando :-) i came down here from chicago in a Sept, 13 yrs ago and if i had not been working in unventilated greenhouses up there (90 degrees was sweatshirt temps to me, it was never under 120 degrees during the day) i would have been shocked by the heat & humidity lol. i have worked outside doing landscape & design for several yrs & a corp buyer for Lowe's garden centers down here but now i prefer inside work lol. summer to us is like winter up north, we hibernate inside till oct-nov lol. the end of the week here will be dry so your drive will be fine.

i was going to say something about flying to/from orlando between 2pm & 8pm, you often get caught circling in a hold pattern or waiting on the runway from may thru oct. last aug my DH booked tix for us to chicago leaving at 3pm, well he ended up bailing on me because of a job interview and i got stuck sitting on the runway for an hour after we had taxi'd into place to take off Grrhhh. last time i let him ever chose flights lol, we leave at the crack of dawn and come in at midnight when i book lol.

sorry your not enjoying our warm weather. I enjoy it myself. When living in Fl you stay inside in the AC or get in the pool or head to the beach. I hope you can do some of them.

Looks like we left for Minnesota just in time...the day before we left, it was 97 in FL, the day after we got to MN, the car had snow on it in the a.m. What a change!

Nita's right. Arizona has dry heat, Florida has wet heat. The humidity in the summer (another month from now), absolutely takes the breathe out of you. Like Liz said, we hibernate until October--sometimes end of September. I'm still enjoying the beautiful mornings while I can.

Liz, is your busy season for plants about over? Noticed you posted a few times. Good to have you back!

Dry heat, humid heat it's still hot and it's only May. Wait till July and August. I get all of my Christmas gifts made in the summer. I won't ride my motorcycle again till October.

I love the heat and humidity. Summer is my favorite time.
It's what you're used to, I guess. I just try to get things done in the morning and evening and don't do much in the middle of the day....and I live without a/c...on purpose.

And here's the weather right now at my house 69F..and sunny and fab...

I know the forecasters say high high winds and rain tonight...but I'll take right now every day of the year..LOL

I agree with Marilyn. It's what you get used to.
When we went to Arizona it was June or July and we were on the motorcycle. Getting there was the killer. Once we got to Nita's house it wasn't near as bad. Or maybe we were having such a good time we didn't notice. :0)

Okay Kat the high was 72F...and only about an hour and a half later..it's already 58F windy and POURING..LOL

patti it is starting to slow down a bit LOL, well i should say normally we are sooo booked up in advance we know what's going on for a week out but now orders come in later. luckily for us we are just getting busy in the interior parts of SC & NC so the season continues longer :-( i'm just happy i have only 7 more days of getting up at 5am and hitting the road at 6am to be in Center Hill (Sumter Co) by 7:30 (don't get home before 8pm usually)...then vacation! which coincides w/ my co-workers finding out just how very difficult my job really is LOLOLOL hahhahaha Thanks for asking!

hope you are adjusting kat! the other day i was flying up the ramp from the turnpike to the 429 w/ the blazing sun blinding me and it was mid 90's outside w/ jimmy buffett on the radio and i said out loud "Gawd i LOVE living here lol!" i really do love it here even during the summer! ~ liz

You haven't experienced hot and humid until you've lived in Houston (4+ yrs. now.) We can't WAIT for retirement & moving back to our beloved FLORIDA (Jacksonville/St. Augustine.)

We were in FL. two weeks ago, it was hot then too! I was glad to comw home to cooler sweatshirt weather.
