Hi Jannie. First, prayers, of course. Then let me say that thyroid cancer is not that common, and very slow growing when it does occur. What are common are benign thyroid nodules. And if they do biopsy and they may not, it could even be fine needle aspiration which could be no big point of penetration even for someone with factors like your immunity drugs. Ultra sound can even tell them if a cyst or solid nodule.

My mother went through a scare back in the 90's where an ear/nose/throat wanted to surgically remove her thyroid, and he actually said, 'to save her life'. As a family, we refused to let him (sure made him mad too) and had her referred to an endo with cancer specialist backup in a larger city. Benign nodule, endo followed it for a couple of years. We had it checked again this spring, she'd had a carotid artery scan and the radiologist noticed it, became alarmed. Same result, benign cyst only slightly larger in size in all these years, not interfering with thyroid function or swallowing.

Of course you want it checked out, but odds are in your favor its nothing to worry about.

Absolutely I'll pray for you but, in this case, I feel you'll be just fine. The first thing the dr. will do is an ultrasound. No big deal. The chances of it being cancer are very very slim and, even if it were, they just remove the thyroid and you take thyroid replacement the rest of your life. I've known many who have had nodules including a family member, they all lived long lives, even the ones who had a malignancy. Don't worry.

My DD, who turned 28 last week, has had benign thyroid nodules (fluid-filled cysts) since she was 12. They have multiplied over the years to the point where she only has about 10% of her thyroid left (overtaking one lobe, then the other). Still, her thyroid levels are perfectly normal. They did an ultrasound to determine size and type of nodule and have done follow-up scans.

We've discussed with doctors three times about having it all removed but since she's a performer on stage and has no other scar history, the doctors are hesitant to cut into her neck. Plus, she doesn't want to be on meds the rest of her life unless absolutely necessary.

She has to have them aspirated on a regular basis. Each time, the fluid is sent to the lab for screening and always comes back clear. Hopefully, this is all you are going to have to deal with.

Cancer is always scary...just the thought of cancer but I have learned from dealing with Cancer twice that the worst part about having cancer is the fear....and my advice to you is take a deep breath and don't worry until or if you have something to worry about...as the posters above have said...most likely it is nothing and even if it is, easily taken care of....

Now first step...that deep breath............

I'm feeling better already, knowing others have gone this route. I'll see a specialist (endocrinologist, I can't even pronounce it,tee hee) and take it from there. If I need a biopsy, so be it. My best friend's sister in law had thyroid cancer, had her entire thyroid removed but is cancer-free years later. I already take so many pills, what's a few more?

Blessings to you. My friend's 29 yr. old DD had thyroid cancer....removed it, takes supplements...doing great.... the surgeon said that if you have to have cancer, it is the "best" kind to have. Keep us posted.

Like Ruthie G, I have been through Cancer twice. And I know that just the word is scary. So just know that you have a lot of prayers coming your way and some good information,so please try and relax.I know it is easier said than done, but tomorrow you will be able to look for a doctor and know that you can be helped.

I can imagine how your mind jumps to the Worst Possible Case, as mine will do the same thing too, even when chances are very good that it is nothing. Hang in there, Jannie--I hope you get peace of mine very soon.
