Can't Decide Between Two Floors! Please Help!

Hi. I posted a few days ago with two floors. Well, I ruled the one dark one out. I am now left with two floors after going to every flooring store in town. They are both beigey and match my Silestone countertops. The problem is that I was told by a saleswoman that one of my floors has pink undertones. The other one probably has an undertone, but I can't tell what it is. My sister and I spent 4 hours yesterday staring at the two of them trying to figure out which one would work best. I like the bigger tiles on the pinky one, but think the color of the smaller tiles might work better since I don't think it has a pink undertone. Anyway, these are both resilient floors (which I'm getting for my doggies). Can anyone help me decide which of the two would look the best. I have included pics of my kitchen and attached familyroom. I decorate with reds and greens (and lots of beige, I guess). Do you think the smaller tiles would look okay in my kitchen or should I go with the pinkey, bigger ones? I am so confused. Okay, I think I figured out how to make the link to my pics easier to get to. Now maybe it will be easier for you guys to help me. Thanks so much. I posted this in the Decorating Forum, too, but figured I might get more response here.

I'm sorry I can't select which tile would be better for you based on your pictures, but I can tell you about my own experience when we selected tiles for our master bath. Granted, they were builder's grade ceramic so the quality wasn't there, but one was called "white" and the other "beige". The woman at the design center said go with the white since our sinks, toilet and tub were white so we did. Well, the "white" tiles also had pinkish undertones, probably moreso than your tile. And when the room was completed, they gave a strong pink cast to the entire room. So, try to look at the floor in all lighting situations especially when natural light hits it. Whatever undertones there are will be amplified when the entire floor is covered with it. Had I given it more thought, I definitely would've gone with the "beige" tile.

I've had both tile and hardwood in my kitchens. The tile was very easy to take care of, indestructible, and impervious to spills. However if you dropped a glass, or someone knocked a jelly jar off out of the fridge, smash! into a million pieces. It was hard on my feet and back, and cold in winter -- radiant heat would've fixed that, of course. Hardwood is more comfortable to walk on, warmer even without radiant heat, and more forgiving when you drop something on it. It isn't waterproof if you have a major flood, but a good finish will keep everyday drips from harming it. Sand and grit are the biggest enemies because they become like sandpaper ground in with every step. We have some scratches from the dog skidding around the corners but it's a distressed type of flooring so I don't mind so much. If you are doing radiant heat, what type of wood floor would you put down? Some floors move (expand and shrink) more than others, and radiant heat can make it worse. An engineered floor will move the least. Antique lumber moves some. New wood planks will move the most, QS less so than flat sawn. (These are generalities of course -- dryness of the wood and subfloor, species of wood, and board widths are huge factors as well.)

I've been in sales for about 20 years and I always resent it when people say that sales people manipulate because I believe a good salesperson gives the buyer enough information to make an informed decision. I think what Trebuchet means when he says they aren't closing, is that they aren't addressing the concerns of the buyer enough for them to make a decision. Tre gives the "dog & pony show" i.e. informs them of the choices and then let's them make a decision based upon the information he gave them. Jakuvall, you say you're not a salesman nor a "closer" but your definition of what you do actually fits my definition of a good salesperson: address the concerns of the consumer and give them enough information to make an educated decision. In a nutshell, you have enough education and belief in your skillset to instill a confidence in the buyer that you're the person for the job. That's why you have a better than average closing ratio: you're authentic. I'm very proud to be a salesperson and a closer.

You know, I agree with you that the island perpendicular to the window wall doesn't feel as right as the island parallel to the window wall. Interesting. I stopped and thought about why that would be. My first thought was that, with the island perpendicular to the window wall, the end of the island closest to the living room now feels as if it's intruding into the walkway between the kitchen and living room. Even though the island ends in line with the side of the fridge closest to the living room, the island still feels as if it's intruding. However, when I look at the island parallel to the window, I also think the end of the island closest to the dining room feels as if it is intruding into the dining room. Even though the island ends in line with the side of the perimeter cabinet closest to the dining room, the island still feels as if it's intruding. So when you're standing in the living room, you like the perpendicular-to-the-window-wall island orientation less (because the island feels as if it's intruding towards you). And when you're standing in the dining room, you'll like the parallel-to-the-window-wall island orientation less (because the island feels as if it's intruding towards you). Given all that, I actually think this shape island (posted earlier upthread) feels the best from both perspectives: That is because the island is completely and clearly inside the invisible borders of the kitchen as delineated by the side of the fridge closest to the living room and the side of the perimeter cabinet closest to the dining room. A square (ish) island doesn't even touch the borders -- it's well inside them by a foot or two, making it impossible for the island to feel as if it's intruding into another room. This home layout is so open that it lacks some of the normal cues (walls/doorways/floor changes) marking where the kitchen ends and another room begins. So in this island's case, a setback from the technical kitchen border helps to clarify things. The island's definitely in the kitchen and only in the kitchen. Here is an edited version that stops the island a foot or two short of the borders in both directions: I'd recommend having seating just on the living room side of the island. Seating on the dining room side puts those chairs back to back with dining room chairs, and I always think that looks/functions a bit oddly.

I can't decide between Sterling Oak and Walton Oak Vinyl Flooring. My husband prefers the darker (walton oak) and I feel like it will be darker than I want. Our room gets minimal light and I don't want the room to look too dark. If we go with the darker wood, what color paint looks good with walton oak vinyl flooring? Please help!

prefer1st choice and don't see the pink issue. saying that, I would pick a slate -mimicing floor to pull the dark out of your counter.....but either of these would be fine if they are your preference.

Okay, I'm a dummy, but what does slate look like? I wouldn't even know what to look for at the flooring store. Does anyone have a picture? Thanks.

Slate would be one of the darker colors in your counter. With the beigey living room floor and furniture, plus light colored cabinets, a darker floor in your kitchen would be smashing. A similar beigey on the floor in the kitchen would be a lot on the monochromatic side.

I still like the bigger tiles but my monitor does not show any pink at all in it so I am not seeing what you are seeing. Did you find resilient tiles in the color you prefer in a bigger size today when you indicated you would go back tot he store? I am trying to help as I made myself crazy picking out my tiles.

Ruthie51, I will definitely take your advice on looking at the pink issue.Cindy103d, the only problem with a dark floor is that I live in Seattle, the rain capital. It is so gloomy and dark here most of the time that I am afraid if I go dark, it will be depressing in this room. Do you think? Lynn2006, I just got back from the store and have another pile to go through. Honestly, I think I need a mental break and am going to leave them until tomorrow when my brain and eyes are fresh. I have been staring at floors for so long I think I'm losing it :)! So, tomorrow I will lay them all out and get them down to two that I like. Thank you everyone for all your help!!! Never knew picking out a floor would be so hard!

Pam, when I was picking out tiles for my two small foyer areas a few years ago, I would love so many in the store but when I got home, they looked totally different! I spent weeks so do not feel bad. We are looking forward to helping you with a floor.
