Well, when I was a teen my room centered around my desk because I did a lot of things there, homework and I also was a writer, so that makes sense. Also the wall art that expressed my personality, pretty normal. Decorative touches that I liked. The only thing dramatically different that I see, is that the walls, other than the wall art, tend to be neutral colors. That could be due to rental conditions, or just the moms and dad's in this situation lowered the boom on outrageous wall coverings. I could not understand, when I was twelve, why my mom nixed so many of my bedroom "decorating" ideas. In the end I guess I wore her down, and we went with my aesthetic, which was WAY over the top. After I moved out, a couple of times friends visited me at my folks house and gave me no end of ribbing about my psychedelic bedroom! Especially since I became a very outdoorsy, crunchy person and my old bedroom screamed pop sugar! It had bright pink giant zinnia wallpaper, and purple shag carpeting and furniture painted bright white with purple, pink, orange, dark turquoise and lime green accents. It would be a "time capsule" bedroom for sure today, if it still existed. I do have a metal shelving unit in the garage with shelves painted all of my old color palette, if I ever wax too nostalgic about it. (Note: some MCM trends are better left in the past!) All of it was eventually changed, which required some work, but I guess for some, not that big of a deal. I inherited a teen bedroom in the first house I bought, which was painted with hyperlink blue trim (including the radiator which I had to repaint with two coats, ugh!) and blue splatter paint walls and red carpet. It looked like a Smurf had blown up in there! But the mom of the previous owners let the boys do the rooms themselves, so there ya go. It was a lot of work to change, but it was only paint, so I understood.

How about the pale green in the duvet? A couple of shades lighter than the blue she likes would be lovely as well with her dresser. Love her duvet, btw.

Sometimes communication with teens is tough - they would simply rather not talk to you. You could try giving him a choice rather than trying to force him to communicate his thoughts or feelings. Tell him you are painting the upstairs, including his bedroom. Give him three colors that you have pre-selected and ask him which color he would like. He will either pick one or tell you he wants the same color as he has. Do the same with furniture, bedding . . . BTW - this works with uncooperative husbands too.
