I agree it's a bit hard to tell from your pics, but I like option 3, though I'd pull it out a bit so the table can be angled by the arm rest instead of to the side as you ahve it pictured . An arm chair should either be put in a conversational grouping with other seating or have a great view of the TV, neither of which is met by option 1.

ahh this room is hard to take pictures in. I actually think 3 looks the best also as far as balance. but i'd rather sit across from the tv to watch it instead of from the sides. maybe i'll have to change that. Plus then i felt like there was a lot of space left over in the corner.

The other thing i wasn't sure what to do with this setting (#3) is i have two end tables. the round one and the shorter rectangle one. where should the tables go? If i were to put the loveseat there where the chair is now (near the plant) i can't fit the end table there unless i would jamb the loveseat the whole way to the wall (with the e.stand) so where do the end tables go? and if you stick the shorter rectangle one on the other end of the couch (near e. stand) it almost disappears because of the height. ahh

i have a floor plan with all the demensions. i even marked it up and scanned it as a pdf and a tif file ..i'm not sure how to get either one of them into here. *sigh* anyone?

OK I don't really know if this would work. I remember your previous post and know your ET doesn't fit on some of the other walls but here goes:
Can you angle the ET on the left corner? Angle the center unit and put the side panels flat against each wall. So when you look at it all three pieces would be touching. Does that make sense?
Then depending on the size of your room, put the loveseat or the couch (I think loveseat) directly across from the ET. Angled in the back corner. Then put the other couch perpendicular to the two angled in the top right corner.
It's the same set up as OPT 2 but it's all angled. I think you would have the same room but it should get the loveseat away from the entrance.
Then you can float the chair around the two entrances with a table angled to face tv or couches.

You might need to change the table between to the two couches to something bulkier like a chest.

mlraff - DH would love you. He wanted to angle that stand from the beginning. Had many of 'light spats' over this. ha. I originally thought it would look ok but it really takes a chunk out of the room. and since the middle section sticks out farther than the sides it's like "POW look at me!" We did have the loveseat angled at one point like that but then you had to move the couch down and i wondered if it looked goofy because things weren't centered with the window.
I would like to try moving the stand just to see. however, i need help moving it and dh is still in a sling, my dad has a bad back... having a hard time finding help. The sucker is very heavy.

Never thought i would have this much trouble arranging my LR.

sheesharee: I'm sure someone can give you better idea how to upload your PDF, but for me, I simply take a picture of whatever I want to share. So, if you can print out the PDF, take a pic and upload. Make sure to note down any measurements. That was one thing I noticed your poor DH was lying on the floor to watch the TV so I can guess that is not the best layout. My DH does not like to put a TV opposite a window as he does not like a glare from the sun hitting the screen. We've also had a few spats where our ent. console was put. At least with us, DH doesn't insist on too much things so I gave in on that one, though I'm also having trouble working out the rest of the layout with our family room.

Would you say your priorities for the room are more for TV watching or socializing?

DH loves to lay on the floor. He has since he was a kid. I have a hard time getting him to sit on the furniture with me! ha. He's always like come down here.

Also, move the little chair around again last night to opt #3 (in the corner) i think i like it better than where it was. Here's what that looks like. I also moved the table from against the wall to at an angle. It still sticks out further from the chair. There's just not enough room there. If i move the chair out from the wall more it starts to go into the entrance.

What do you think now of this?

Good deal on the chair. Now, I can see your room constraints that I was talking about on your window treatment post. You're right. It's hard to arrange such big pieces. I find loveseats hard to fit into a room that already has a sofa & entertainment center anyway. I'm going to have to mull this over.

i'm glad you saw this red. i was trying to figure out what pics to now post. i'm sure everyone's so sick of seeing a bazillion pics of my LR. it's hard to take shots of everything. I think there needs to be a bus trip to my house!

I really like the little corner you made but I think it's too far from the tv and too far from the sofa to be part of the conversation (am I wrong?). How about if you put a chest of some type (bombay chest) where the chair is now and face it towards the couches. Put a picture and lamp and all the goodies. Then move the chair back to the other side of the entrance but instead of facing the tv, angle it towards the loveseat. Then add a rug (big rug) to unify everything. I know you already have carpeting but I think everything is floating without putting a rug down. I also like the plant in the corner.

mlraff - it's probably too far for conversation i just don't know where else i can put it with my other big a** furniture. :)

moving the chair to the other side of the entrance where the loveseat currently is... i would then have to move the loveseat to where the kitty stuff is which is right in front of the plant because i have to keep the sofa infront of the window.
then i have a large gap between the sofa and the wingchair and that round table isn't filling the void. what would i do with the shorter rectangular table then?
I should've never bought the sofa. just the loveseat!!! loveseat and maybe the matching CHAIR that went with it. geesh.

Have you thought about taking the 2 tower/bookshelves from the ET and putting together? I have a ET like that - in another house we had to do that. It looked like a very nice bookshelf. I think by breaking up the ET it would give you alot more options for furniture arranging.

The armoire could go where your love seat is drawn on the drawing - (make any sense? ) Maybe even angled in that corner. Sofa on 18' wall - make a L with loveseat on the wall toward the kitchen.

No I meant putting the chair on the wall where the plant is but angled towards the loveseat instead of straigh out like before. Leave the couches as they are.

johnatemp - that came up before about separating the pieces. DH just loves them together. I wanted to at least see it that way but it's really heavy and since it was carried to the LR i can't get anyone to help move it. DH is still in a sling from his surgery (when he feels like wearing it) and my poor Dad has a bad back..etc, etc. I would have more options that way. Wish i could wave a wand! "let's try this here, and that there"

I dunno where you should put it, sorry; I flunked Layout 101. But... for $15 and some elbow grease it's very nice and you just made one kitty very, very happy!

It's difficult even with the diagram for me to make suggestions. However, your room is large so I think the large sofa should come off of the wall it's on and float in the room facing the entertainment center. Have you tried that yet? Then place the love seat on the side of the room the sofa came from, but in an L-shape with the sofa. Then put your new chair on the other side of the coversational area kind of on an angle so it's pointed into the area, not facing straight. Does this make any sense? I think all the large pieces need to come off the walls because it's not cozy the way it is. Sorry to tell you this, but you need more furniture for that big room. LOL I love your new chair, what a great find.

brutuses - see opt 2. that's the loveseat floated off the wall. if i stuck the sofa out in the middle i feel like i cut the room in half and am wasting space behind.

OK your couches are stuck in my mind. I have another idea (probably won't work). Have you tried floating the loveseat directly across from the couch. Centered one across from the other. Wouldn't that leave enough space for a walkway from one entrance to the other?
Then possibly angle the chair kinda in the corner/wall where the loveseat is now or you could do it the other way and put it close to the loveseat angled to face the sofa (but I think this would block some space).

My other totally-off-my-rocker-idea was to take opt-4 and pull the loveseat towards the entrance but angled facing the sofa/et corner. Like I said off-my-rocker!

Should I mention that when your DH is better that you should consider painting?

mlraff - i'm going to try your suggestions also tonight. when floating the sofa and loveseat i find that it ends up right infront of the entrances. helps around the entrances if you push it towards the middle but then i think the room looks totally squashed funny.

we'll be painting hopefully soon! need to pick a color first. :)

I was thinking of the loveseat coming away from the wall to form a conversational area. However, the above poster's idea might be better.

Like I said it's difficult for me to arrange your furniture without being there. I'm not a professional at interior design and am one who also struggles with design. I jus thought your room was too big to have all the furniture pushed up against the walls. I would just recommend different positions for he furniture from against the wall and see if you can come up with something that looks and feel good. Post some more photo's for us to see.

It's still hard to read your drawing. I do like some of the suggestions to form a grouping if you can with the sofa, loveseat and chair. Another option if you feel that is not working is to try taking out the loveseat and replacing with another chair. I prefer the sofa and two chair options over a loveseat--esp. if space is more limited. The chairs would not need to match. The one you have now is a great neutral which would give you more options for adding another. I know your DH will love this suggestion(NOT!) I think johnmari has a good point of breaking up the ent. center to give you more options. With the doorways situated as they are I can see your delimna if the ent center does not fit any other way. The long wall opposite the doorways is really the ideal spot to group your seating. Do you have any graph paper? I found it helpful to draw the actual furniture to scale on my layout and I even made little scaled cutouts and moved them around. I agree you only want to move that ent. center once! Here is what I mean:

If you keep the chair/table in that corner, some thoughts would be to move the table to the left of the chair and see if you can angle it better or to try the other end table (isn't that more round?) As for the lamp, I think it looks great.

this floor plan looks so familiar, even the piano is in the same place! do you all remember the thread I'm thinking of? her room ended up looking great. She had two arm chairs, one with an ottoman, facing a sofa that was in front of a big window, on which she had new drapes hanging. FP in same location and doorway to LR same location.

I think this looks really goofy. however, there's more space when you walk in the entrance since since the sofa can be moved up farther. the couch is soo long that it blocks the entire entry from the foyer. please don't mind the tape all over the couch. "sticky paws" in an attempt to stop my kitties from destroying my curtains. it's working btw! There's a weird amt. of space behind. same as opt. 2 . Also come Christmas time, I know it's only maybe two months max the tree is up but I have no where to put it. Bought a big 7 ft. prelite, life like tree last year after Christmas that i'm not willing to part with. guess i'd have to just make some adjustments then.

I like opt 4 the best also. Bring out the left corner of the loveseat just a tad (so it almost touches the sofa) just to angle it a little more. Put the chair close to the unit and place the table on the other side (left side) of the chair -angle it more towars the couches. Then you could get another chair and put it in the other corner.
In the back corner behind the couches, you can put another plant. You still need a rug to unify and a coctail table.
Like I said before (in the entrance corner) you can put a console table/bombay chest with lamp and art (instead of another chair).

so what type of plant should i get for that back corner? i feel like i'm getting too leafy. anything else i could put back there instead? What about that flower light? The ends of the entertainment stand light up and shoot off pretty much light in the evenings so for function that light wouldn't really need to be there. I do need to get a lamp for the round table.

what size rug are you talking? I really am not going to be able to convince DH for that one right now. It won't make sense to him about "unifying". he'll say,"it's brand new carpet!?" I do think that would help tie in the room though. Maybe part of my Chritmas present. Listen to me! I never thought i'd hear the day I'd want house stuff for holidays!! haha

For the plant I was just think something similar to the palm (there are better plant experts here than me) but the lamp is a good solution for now. I think once you get some art on the walls it will help balance everything.
The rug, I can see where dh is coming from and I really hate rugs on top of carpets but you can tell him it's more cushion for when he lays on the floor. A standard 5x7 fits a loveseat/sofa combo but I think you would have to go bigger. The table, brings me back to dh laying on the floor, you might not want one, maybe an ottoman.
I do think the table will look better on the other side of the chair, one because it won't be right next to the unit and two because you'll see the table and then the chair when you walk it. The way it is now, you can't see the table. I love how the green pillows look!
I've always asked for home things for gifts, in fact for mother's day I asked for a matching soap dispenser for my kitchen faucet!

mlraff - maybe i'll keep the pillows! did you see my other thread! worried they're too shiny. i may need to live with them for awhile and see.

ottoman or coffee table could be in the future. DH could lay around it. he's everwhere on that floor. I went home last night find bedroom pillows and a blanket scattered all over the LR floor. The part i think that drives me more nutz is that it's all blue to match our bedroom and there's not a stitch of blue in the living room except that cat toy cube! ha anyhow...

Then definitely buy an ottoman with storage and put a "matching" blanket and pillows inside. You can also put some floor pillows in the empty corner.
I was thinking that you might want to put the plant in the corner behind the loveseat (eventhough I think it looks great where it is). You might need something tall in that side of the room to balance the e.stand. Then just put some artwork where the plant was.
I like the pillows because I have very similar ones (a little browner). I like shiny stuff!

hmm.. i really do like the plant in the corner with the table and chair. i'm sure the plant would also look good behind the loveseat. i think i'll be doing some more tree/plant shopping. If i get a different one for upfront (near the chair)what type? different palm? i'll admit the tree in the corner is fake. looks real in person though. even has some brown leaves on there to help it along. i didn't know it until i touched it. so that being said... i haven't seen any fake ficus sp? trees that i liked. Can't have real ones because i'll kill them plus the cats will try and eat them.

I also like option 4 the best. Try moving the plant you have now back there and take a pic. That should give us a better idea how it looks. Another plant that might look good there is one with as braided truck and smaller palm leaves from that. I have both a palm and the other one I described. I find the palm starts branching out quite low and may not work as well behind the sofa. It you like I'll take a pic of it.

Have you tried sliding down your sofa further on that wall so that it is not centered under the window, but that the far end stops flush with the window and the just pushing the love seat aganist the wall so it forms an L-shape. It does not look like you have enough space to float the sofa or loveseat, unless you can move it forward another 12-18" and put a narrow console table against the wall.

I assume there is not space for the ent. center on the wall where you have the loveseat? That would be an ideal spot.

val - because of the crown moulding the stand only fits on the wall it's on. DH actually was the bright one that thought of the before we tried to move it. I was convinced it would work on that wall. haha IThat would be great if you could post a pic of your trees.

I'll have to try the push the sofa down to the edge of window. I think there still wasn't enough room and it looked funny... i'll check it out again tonight.

I like it. In the long run and with time there is always more things to buy, art, paint, rugs but for now it looks great! I think you did a wonderful job.

mlraff - bought new pillows over the weekend. the green pillows i had just weren't working. i think i'll be changing my curtains out in the near furture to a heavier fabric. some type of pinch pleat. for now they'll have to stay though.
painting will be next and i'm just going to live in the house for awhile until i get a feel for what i want in the room as far as artwork.

terriks - i know.. the flower light doesn't go. it was a wedding gift from my sister and brother in law. (haven't even been married a year) i actually picked it out of a catalog before we had the house built. wasn't really sure at that time of the furniture etc. i would be using. I can't get rid of it ... they paid a pretty penny for it and i do like the light. but agree it doesn't go. maybe someday it'll find a home in my bedroom.

sheesharee: I like it! That is what I was referring to about the sofa location. I agree about the lamp, though can see it's a sticky situation. How long have you had it? I would think once you've been married about 10-years, you could safely say it's "dated" and replace it. Perhaps your sister thinks so too. In the meantime, the bedroom sounds like a better place for it.

Another nice touch would be to put a throw over the back of the loveseat to soften the look of the open corner.

val - june will be a year that i've been married. Does the light look THAT DATED??? i'm not that old either!! oh my.... i thought it was different and didn't know anyone else who had one. My sister wouldn't be mad at me but I know financially they didn't have a whole lot when they bought it for us and she was really trying to do something nice. I would just feel bad at this point. I will say i like it less and less.... oh well. Someday it'll find a new spot or home.

It seems like you are going for an elegant, traditional, old world type look. The flower lamp definitely does not say any of that. It could be cute in a guest bedroom though.

sheesharee: Oops! Only one year. I've seen a few of those for sale on CL. I wonder what type of decor they are meant to go with? You know, we really are very discriminating here on the decorating forum. I've had comments too that something I love doesn't go with the rest of my room. Does that mean we automatically need to take it out? The key here is do you love it or does it have sentimental value to you? If it does, then if definitely belongs. On a related thread there was a comment about how every room should have something "whimsical" to it. Perhaps the lamp is it? Ultimately our homes should be a reflection of who we are and what is important to us. The flow of your room is much improved and I think once you put more art on the walls and around the room, the focus won't be so much on the lamp. Right now there is not so much on the walls so naturally the lamp does become a focal point. BTW, have you considered painting the walls?

I think it's meant to be art deco perhaps?
