Now that I got my plants, where do they go?

Hello again, In my other post everyone knows that I just bought my 1st load of hostas. Now here is the problem, which of these do good in the sun. I realized today as I danced and clapped like a mad woman around my plants that one of the areas that I thought was mostly shady is not really shady at all. The tree that is right next to the area, has branches to far up to make it a good shade tree. I'm in zone 3 or 4(middle Wisconsin) and the area gets morning and afternoon light until about 4pm. Any help would be great. The hosta guru that I bought them from told me too much to retain in my head, ok I was busy doing the hosta dance when he told me about some of them:) Here is the list of them:

NICE haul. You are well on your way to hosta heaven. Do you have a spot in the ground prepared? You've got alot of minis there. I plant my mini's together cuz they get lost in the big ones. How about a couple of trough gardens til you've got that ground prepared? I bet they would look great in a trough.

Toni, I think she meant that she bought a plant, but had she bought a fruit at the grocer it would be $5. I'd say they grow in alkaline soil, because they like the same kind of soil as olives, grapes, and rosemary, well drained sandy soil. For this time of year $5 can be expected for fresh figs. Out of CA or other Medeteranian states figs will be quite pricy, because they don't travel well when ripe and really don't taste as good if not left on the vine (Yes figs are vines) to ripen. They would have to be greenhouse grown if grown in a large enough scale to go to market. That's why most of the time you only see dried figs, which are really good treats in themselves. Given enough light, you should get more fruit eventually, most figs are self fertile and have two crops a year.

Thanks, Mad, that's what I needed to understand. I'm in zone 6 and it gets pretty darn cold but winter is our driest time of the year so I don't have that problem. Even the snow is dry as weird as that sounds. The thing that is worst for my roses is the fluctuating temperatures. It can be 40 in the daytime and below zero at night. Or we can go a week or ten days in the teens and then have a week in the 30s and 40s. The roses get confused, try to bud out, then freeze, then thaw, back and forth. I've found that they can only do that so many times before the stored energy in the roots and canes just gives out and they die. Mulching them insulates them from that yo-yoing effect to some degree. I look for a hard freeze to get them dormant and then winter protect to try and keep them dormant until I know the temps will stay warm enough for them to start growing. Yes, Natural, you can winter protect pots. I have 30 (it was as high as 60 last winter) in pots that I've been winter protecting for 6 winters now. If you have a garage, and with only two to protect, I'd say put them in the unheated garage for the winter. Put them up on pot trolleys or blocks off the cement floor (Michaelg thinks I'm nuts about that BTW, lol) and remember to give them a little water every month. It's doesn't have to be a lot but they're dormant, not dead, and need some water. Desiccation will kill a rose quick too. A lot of people I know who garage their pots will take a shovel full of snow when they shovel their driveway and put it on the pots to water them. I do that with the one and only rose that will fit inside my shed, the tree rose. It gets the prized spot because I can't winter protect that top graft in the pot ghetto. All the rest of my pots winter outside on the back, south facing, wall of my house. I group them all together, drive in wood stakes, surround the whole thing with burlap and then pack it with leaves. In 6 years I've lost way more roses in the ground than in the pot ghetto. And those were usually sickly going in. And don't do it too early. I don't do mine until after Thanksgiving usually. Like I said you want to make sure they're completely dormant and then keep them dormant until night time temps are consistently above freezing. So don't get itchy in the spring (a bad habit of mine) and pull them out too soon either. Hope all that helps and if you have any other questions, ask away! Through trial and error I've done most everything you can do wrong but eventually figured some things out, lol!

Hi Moonie, Here is the link to my root pruning... I sure hope this helps... Your tree is looking great to all of us Plumeria Lovers!!! Some of mine are so ugly, they are "cute.." : ) I have one tree "Pele" that looks like it went through a nuclear meltdown when the temps were Ahhh... very hot in the greenhouse last year.. Won't mention any names.. Cough, cough... He is still in the dog house for that one.. : ) I now have the temps under control.. This was the only one that looks bad.. So, your tree looks great to me too! : ) You are so right about our temps here.. We can have cool temps and then extreme heat. That is why you need to be careful to acclimate your trees in the spring. It sounds like you have a great handle on yours!! Good Luck and keep us posted!! Rachel, You are so kind to say.... Got my bins,Got my worms,Got my cocoons, NOW What!?!

Thanks Vagas and Tclynx. I had the cocoons in a plastic bag w/o air or food. Just worm doo and cocoons which aren't that recognizable to me yet. I could not imagine leaving them in the plastic bag vagas, so I prepared a bed of peat moss/a couple cups of cornmeal/ and a couple cups of wellllll rotted bagged cow manure that has been laying out in the weather for about 3 years/and a few handfuls of small shredded paper to break up all that dirt looking stuff. Well Mixed and damp. I poured the plastic bag of worm cocoons out onto this mixture in the bin and covered it with a layer of dry shredded paper. I did put some drain holes in the bottom, and I did put another container w/o holes under that to capture any liquid excess or baby worms that might fall through and of course the brick to keep the upper plastic container from falling down below the air holes. And I did put a soaked piece of cardboard box down in my bin to cover the holes for the babies to lay on,first thing. I did that about 3 days ago with the cocoons and I don't see any babies yet, but since I am still afraid I will damage them if I put my hands down in the mixture to look, that doesn't mean they aren't there, I'm sure. In the meantime, I am down to opening and looking at the worms only about 3 times a day and that IS a struggle for me. I put the 3 containers together like Vaga said. The worms are awfully skinny and aren't moving too fast just yet. It has been only about a week and a half since I put them(1000) in there and NOW I can see that they are eating the bedding up and pretty quickly. So, Friday, I set the second prepared container that makes the tiered bin on top of that W/Oa brick (The worms around outside are all laying under heavy stuff so I figured the small weight of the container could be helpful) and I put about 1/2 lb or less of kitchen scraps and coffee grounds and of course shredded paper in it in case they wanted more to eat. They really are skinny. I have never seen such skinny little worms. I am sure they must grow (red wigglers)bigger. Anyway, Today when I looked at them, I DID find that they are migrating up into the food...or at least about 20 of them have so far. Out of fear that they would attempt to escape and inadvertantly commit suicide, I placed the whole 3 layer bin in a large black garbage bag leaving it open and loose in case they try to explore outside the box while I am gone. That way, I won't find them dried up on the floor or step on them. Once I saw that they weren't trying to get away, I took the bin out of the bag. Not one fatality due to escape...not one worm in the bag either. =o) So, I am learning not to sit and prowl through their bedding to see what they are doing.....all the time. Just nervous about them I guess. Trial and error is the way of life, I suppose. I will either get more worms, or they will not do well for me. Thanks so much for your input. GET THEM ALL IN THE GROUND .... ASAP ....

we can dig them up later and figure out where to put them ...

unless you are an experienced nurseryman ... dealing with pots is VERY HARD .... even i do it only rarely ...

so just make a little 4 by 4 foot area and get them all in the ground.. and water them ...

THEN start moving them around the yard ...

Help! Need to know which ones to put in sunny area!

As to where I went- A couple of years ago I was garage saleing ( I live in Eau Claire,WI) and saw a sign on the road for hostas. So I went because I loved hostas at that time and wanted to see the prices. I had no idea what I was in for!! The hosta guru's name is Mark Strandburg and he lives in Altoona (I call it our suburb). His prices are great and he is unbelieveable. In the world of hostas I would love to be like him. He made the Lilyanna series, I know he said some of them are not even on the market yet,2009 is when they will be out, they are being tissued right now. He named the series after his granddaughter. If your looking for minis, it is just the place or any hosta for that matter! I am truly blessed to have him here and so close. Hi Stacey. You can plant any of your hostas in partly shady / partly sunny areas, and even in totally sunny areas. I've got one large bed of hosta mixed with iris (a sun plant) that are on the north side of my house and that is in full sun 100% of daylight hours in the summer time. They are doing great! That said, the blue ones won't stay blue so long as they would in shaded areas, if you plant them in the sun. Some others may fade out. Most will be a different shade of color when planted in the sun. Good luck with all of them! Joyce
