To the left of the sink. The majority of what we use our garbage for is unwrapped food packaging and scraping plates. We have a very similar setup with the range and the sink and that corner between them is our main prep area (right now). If we had the garbage there, it would save us a lot of steps in prep and in cleanup.

That placement would also flow nicely for a scrape, rinse and put in the dishwasher sequence of events.

In our new kitchen plan, we are doing to the left of the main sink, and a smaller one pullout under the prep sink in the peninsula. Maybe that would work for you here too?

Yes, maybe you are right. I could just stick a tiny one for scraps under the prep sink instead of devoting a whole cabinet for it there. It doesn't even have to be a full size trash can.

What size is your trash pullout?

Get it as close to the sink as possible.

I couldn't bring myself to devote a whole cabinet to trash when I had 2 sink cabinets with pretty much nothing going on underneath, so I put mine under my sinks. I've had some challenges dealing with plumbing (needing a shorter can in the back to accomodate for the drain), but it's working out fine so far. Maybe you could do the same. I asked my plumber to try and keep all the plumbing to one side, so one side of the cabinet is used for trash and the other side just has a little bin for recycling.

donka - I remember your beautiful kitchen. IKEA, right? I am doing a pretty deep single bowl undermount stainless sink. Hmmm... Need to think about this.

We are staying at a vacation house and they have a huge trash pullout with two trash bins. I really thought that was what I wanted but I don't want a double just for trash. It's just too wide and hard to pull out.

How about in the island with the pullout right behind the sink?

My kitchen is laid out similar to yours and we ended up putting mine to the right of the DW. I like having the space in between the range and the sink available for utensils, etc. but I think that is just personal preference.

To odiegirl13, I think definitely to the left of the sink in that kitchen, it will be REALLY convenient.

I find that so far I want the trash most while I'm prepping. That may be partially because my city recycles just about everything, so by far my largest amount of trash is paper and plastic recycling. Vegetative waste goes in a bag for the green bin. Not so much goes in the garbage.

In your layout, I'd want to put the garbage under the sink as others have suggested (you can go with a shorter, wider bin), but I think you were onto something by putting the recycling in the snack area. It seems to me that a lot of snacking items generate a lot of packaging. Perhaps divide and conquer is really the way to go!

If you'll prep on the island, I'd keep the trash in the island, in the cab next to the prep sink, but maybe opening toward the main sink...So it's reachable from both areas, but when prepping, you can easily sweep crumbs, scraps, etc. off the island into it. Otherwise, left of the sink also makes it pretty easily available to both the prep and cleanup areas.

I'd want my trash to be convenient both to prep and scraping dishes (cleanup). It looks like you have a few places that would work.

Can you put the pullout just left of the sink and still be able to stand and prep by the range? That might be most convenient because you can stand beside the range, prep, and swivel for the trash. Or stand at the sink, scrape to your left, and put dishes in the dishwasher to your right.

@poorowner I got it at AHturf.com, see the link below for their catalog of trash pull outs. Its actually made by Rev-a-shelf and has its own built in soft close mechanism, which feels a lot like blumotion.

Just a thought to keep in mind, if you consider putting your bins under the sink, obviously you aren't going to be able to fit large ones. Just keep that in mind if you are used to having large ones in the kitchen. I tried to sell my wife on the smaller bins but it didn't work :(

In the island, facing the range with a smaller under sink unit under the cleanup sink.

Reasoning is most of our trash comes from prep/ref/micro-A LOT of packaging as well as uncooked scrap veg that we compost. Very little from scraping plates.

I found those kirkland 13 gallon trashbags when filled to the capacity it is going to be a bit stinky, in warmer times anyway.

Some people argue if you put it UNDER the sink, you would have to yeild to someone dumping the trash when working at the sink, which hurts the work flow.

I am not lucky enough to have it under the sink or close to it. So it is half way between kitchen and dinner table. It used to be just a garbage can there in the walkway making it even narrower.. except now it is in a cab, which we found to be an improvement.

The obvious place for the trash is in the island. The reason for that is that it's between the range, the fridge, the sink, and right where you're going to be prepping your food (on the island). It's where I put mine, and it's very conveniently placed for every activity in the kitchen. Also, when I'm cutting onions next to the range for instance, it's EASY to throw the skins/roots into the trash next to the range. When I'm unloading things from the fridge, the trash is RIGHT THERE. If I'm emptying a box, bottle or jar, the island is where I'm working.

I have never understood why people think the sink area is the best place for trash.

What is my biggest regret in my kitchen and that I heartily wish I could change? The location of my trash pullout.

I find that I use the trash/recycle far more often and for much longer extended periods of time while preppinng than while cleaning up. It only makes sense...70% of time spent in the kitchen is spent prepping. Also, while prepping you use a variety of supplies that generate trash & recyclables. I'm tired of either traipsing across the aisle over & over again with often dripping trash/recycling or piling everything up on the counter for a couple of major trips to the trash pullout.

So, my recommendation to you is to put the trash pullout in the Prep Zone! It would be nice to have it also accessible to the Cleanup Zone, but the Prep Zone is far more important.

I think for me the island is best. Most of the trash comes from prep and not so much from cleanup. I am down to across the from the main sink or next to the prep sink. I am leaning toward next to the prep sink because I think I can still reach it from the main sink.

(IKEA, custom, IKEA, custom... which way will I go...)

Was just thinking of you as I was cleaning my island. What else might you use your island for? Today I used mine as a potting/seeding table. When I was finished, it was an easy clean-up, as I gathered and swept the leftover loose dirt and torn-off seed-packet-tops from the island counter right into the trash pullout. I realized I do the same with stray flour after a baking project. I could imagine this also happening with art or science projects, or gift wrapping. Would have been a bigger hassle this afternoon, if the trash was across the aisle. I see that you're already leaning toward the island location, but thought these additional thoughts might help you, too.

beuhl is right, move it close to your prep zone, that is the keyword, and that might be different area for different people

I did think most people prep near the sink. At least my knife and cutting board is right next my undermount farm sink, most of the waste get scooped into the sink for disposal. Mostly I have to throw away packaging.

I don't use my island for much of anything, just eating breakfast. :) I thought I would use my island for prep also, but not nearly much in reality. I didn't want to bring washed veggies across..

I usually end up dragging the trash can over to the current peninsula counter or using a temporary trash container. It is so annoying having the prep area so far away from the cooktop.

Your island sounds like a well loved, super functional part of your kitchen rhome. I can't wait to enjoy ours. A lot of work gets done on our current peninsula. I still want at least one stool at the end of the island for my jr. helpers that want to be a part of the action.

PoorOwner...I have a prep sink in my Prep Zone and my Prep Zone & Cooking Zone are next to each other.

Since you will have a prep sink in the island across from the range, I think you'll use the island for prepping at least as much, if not more than the counter b/w the range & cleanup sink. At the island, you not only have more room, but you can also visit with others...making it a pleasant place for prepping.

Have you considered putting the prep sink on either the range side on the cleanup sink end or on the cleanup sink side at the range end?

Advantages of either arrangement: It would allow the island to be used for landing space for the refrigerator.
It would also mean that not only will items from the refrigerator be put on the island, but that those items will be in the perfect place for prep.
Additionally, it would keep the sink away from those sitting at the island so they aren't splashed when someone is working at the sink.

The whole layout of the island is really hanging me up. I have gone round and round with this for months. Now that I have to actually make a decision and put my money down I feel paralyzed.

My dream prep sink would be Elizpiz's Beach Sink. For prepping purposes I could never want more. That sink is only 24'' wide (needs a 27'' cabinet) but I would need another 12-15'' for the accessory cutting board to really work. I basically was planning a 24'' cabinet on the refrigerator side of the range end of the island with the trash next to it. (I could steal a few inches from the trash cabinet like Elizpiz did.) I would still need 39'' on that end though.

The only issue with it is that my goal was to use the island for a buffet/serving area/seating and the sink seems to take up too much valuable real estate. It also may be just too darn big for the size of my kitchen.

buehl - I was kind of thinking about those option and I know they may violate the rules of making the prep sink available to folks on the other side. On the other hand having that landing space would be wonderful and I could truly use the space as a long buffet for company.

Maybe I should just turn the sink so it is on the range end of the cleanup side. Then the trash could be next to it with no problem. The trash would then be under the prep area but across from the clean up sink. I would then have room for my 12'' dream overhang on the other side.

How wide are your aisles, particularly b/w the sink side & island? If they're too narrow, you don't want to be in a situation where two people are trying to work directly across from one another...e.g., at the island/prep sink and at the main sink. I think you'll need at least 42" in this instance.

I put trash pullouts both next to my main sink, and in my island directly behind (across aisle from) the prep sink. I use both ALL the time and am very glad I put in 2. Also, in another area of "waste magagement"....if you are putting a diposer in, you might think about one in each sink, if your budget allows. I put 1 in my main sink, as well as one in my prep sink, wondering at the time if it was excessive. I am SOOO glad to have both of them, one for prepping, one for cleanup - just something to think about.

crash - DH was asking about the disposal situation but I was trying to skimp on the budget. I guess I might regret skimping. For me, most of the waste for the disposal is generating during prep.

More and more I think I like moving the sink to the clean up sink side. I feel like I can breath a little bit better a wider prep space. I also think the prep sink would be in more of a direct line to the range. I am planning on putting a 30'' cabinet on the other side of the prep sink. It should be able to hold baking sheets and mixing bowls as well. I don't have the budget for the Beach sink but it would be nice.

I think my aisles will be really good. The range wall is around 112'' before the door way. I think if I stick with a 36'' island it will be good. I was aiming for 42'' aisles and I have more than 48'' on the refrigerator side. I did not try to draw them perfectly in the IKEA planner. We are kind of a 1.5 butt kitchen. I do 99% of the clean up and 90% of the prep.
