Help me w/Trash Pull-out Location...please!! (Buehl)

I asked a bunch of questions re. cabinet features a week ago and got so much great advice from the nice folks here, esp. Buehl. Now I debating exactly where I should put the trash pull-out cabinet. See kitchen layout below. The KD recommended two potential locations:

1. Left of main sink - instead of the B27, do a B18 for trash pull-out and B9 for try cabinet. This would be my ideal location for trash, but concern is B9 is going to be a headache when trying to find trays or cutting boards (I had one before and it was way too crowded). I guess I could do a pull out B9, but obviously that's an additional couple hundred dollars.

2. On the island - instead of the B48 and B24, have B18 (trash pull-out), B36 (maybe 3 drawers), and B18 (for 2nd sink) from left to right. I am not thrilled about the trash location since I'll have to turn around from the main sink, and if I keep it open for a while when standing at the sink, other people will hit too many obstacles if they want to go through that area. The pro is that I don't need to break up the B27 left of the sink, which will be more spacious for keeping trays and cutting boards, with the kind of dividers Buehl recommended from Walmart.

Maybe I already have this figured out. But would love to hear from you guys to confirm. By the way, if the KD marked B48 in the island, does it mean it's a double door cabinet or two single door ones?

I actually like having my trash pullout in the island behind the sink. It's close to the sink and DW, and when I prep on the island it's handy to have the trash right there for tossing out peels, wrappers, etc.

Does your neighborhood do recycling (or is it planning to)? If so, you might want more than 18" for a trash pullout so that you can do trash and recycle together. Something like this (ours has a frame around the top that the cans fit into but I couldn't find a pic like that):

You could do this on the left side of the island, with a bank of drawers in the middle, then a cabinet under the prep sink.

Yes. We will have a double bin pull-out and one will be for recycling. What you suggest does make sense. I just wanted to confirm that the location will be handy considering the work flow in a kitchen. I'll probably just do 2 pull-out trays for the B36 for $200, since the builder charges $500 for 3 drawers! I will have 3 drawers on the right side of the range for storing pots and pans.

One of my client's broke her pull out which is a cabinet door attached to a bottom mount pullout. She said she was pushing trash down into it (which I believe, she was probably cramming). She said drinking was not involved, (which I don't really believe). Anyway it can't be fixed without replacing the bottom of the cabinet since the screws split the cabinet floor when they pulled out. I think it is a design flaw, and would recommend a top-mount style.

we're planning this same set-up. I chose the blanco diamond super single because I wanted a single bowl sink with the drain off to the right side. We will also have a disposal and a hot water tap on the right. We planned it this way so we could free up the left side space for a garbage bin under the sink. We are planning for a rev-a-shelf double 35qt system which should fit perfectly. I'm waiting till our granite and sink are in before we do that though. On the other door I'm putting the rev-a-shelf sink base storage unit (holds dish soap, sponges..etc). My sinkbase is going to be jam-packed with stuff and it will hopefully make life easier. Terri, I have a head cold so my thinking is not 100% clear today. :-) I'm going to hopefully answer your question and not be confusing. (I'm not sure of my chances with this!) If you are talking about combining drawer fronts (regardless of whether or not they are 18" or 36") then it would look like the first picture in this post (but wider if 36"). That would involve connecting the drawer fronts with this Ikea part: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20277436/ I don't see any reason you couldn't combine the drawer fronts and drill hinge holes to make the combined drawer fronts in to doors. We used custom fronts in our Ikea kitchen, but we were able to drill the hinge holes ourselves in a few cover panels and it was not difficult. The important thing would be to make sure you put the connectors in a place that don't conflict with the hinge holes. (Probably moving them in a little bit. Or, a possibly much simpler solution would be to buy 2 18"x20" doors and two 18" by 10" drawer fronts. You could attach the 10" tall drawer fronts permanently to the sink base, so they don't move.It shouldn't interfere much with the access to cabinet, since the sink will be taking up the top of the cabinet. Then you could attach the two 18"x20" tall doors as regular doors with hinges and you could put the handle anywhere and even use the cup pulls and make them look like drawers if you want. Maybe you don't mind the idea of pull outs under the sink. But if you are not putting your trash there, it seems like the pull outs are more inconvenient for under sink access. I personally like having the doors there. I don't think hacking the cabinet/fronts in either of these ways would be too difficult. So if you think doors would be better, you can make it work. At the very least I would consider whether you want to do a 36" pull out versus 2 18". The really wide pull outs felt really awkward to me at the Ikea store. If you do 18" pull outs you can add a small piece of wood at the bottom to make that happen as is demonstrated in some of pippabean's links.

Doesn't it come with the trash bins? Check Rev-A-Shelf. Btw... the cabinet only needs to be 18" wide, not 21.5". I'd put those extra 3.5" into the cabinet next to it (assuming there is a cabinet next to it).

I don't have pictures but...

In the order of volume generated in our house per day/week
1. Recycle: we use 40qt + garbage can. We do not need to sort for the city. So all paper, glass, cans, plastic go into the recycle.
2. compost: We use 2 large green compost bins. We use bioliners so that they can be composted. one is for the backyard which only has fruit and vegie peels, and one is for the city which has meat and dairy. We scrape the dinner plates into the city compost bin. Most of the restaurants in the city does the same thing. The city picks up everything including used paper towels and pizza boxes in the "food waste" program.
3. garbage/trash: we use a much smaller garbage can, about the size of a grocery bag. if not emptied daily, it smells too much, ie chicken wrappers. So we don't need a large garbage can.

I have the large recycle and the small garbage in the same pull out drawer. I have put the smaller garbage over the "shelf rack" so that the garbage is lifted up a little and closer to the top AND I store the garbage bags under the shelf storage rack.

I keep the compost bins under the sink pull out. I could not find a system where all 4 boxes could fit in one pullout and NOT take up enormous amount of space so I lose storage. I had to accept that some under sink storage need be used for dealing with complicated garbage and compost.

Hope this makes sense.

If your city has a "food waste" program, you will find that you have very little trash that goes into landfill and you may need to modify the trash/recycle/compost bin system in your house if you chose to do the city compost.

Have you considered putting the trash just to the left of the prep sink, in the island? You could still access it from the main sink, by a quick pivot to the left.

We have a 9-inch cabinet for cookie sheets, etc., and the only problem arises when other family members forget that there is a whole separate spot in the kitchen for cutting boards to live. If you put the pullout trash to the left of the main sink, you might consider just keeping cutting boards in the 9-inch cabinet, and putting cookie sheets, etc., someplace closer to the actual oven. (We actually have so many baking sheets that many of them live in the bottom drawer of the stove, but of course not all stoves have a drawer like that.)

kaismon: it's awesome that your city does composting! I'm envious. I recycle as much as I can and compost a few things, but it sure would be easier if our city had a composting program.
