Which of the following best describes your home:

I guess mine is sort of like a cabin in the woods, but brick and bi level.

I just read through this 3 year forum. It's nice to see great questions and answers. I work with mason bees on the commercial side. A couple of points. - unless you have chalkbrood, there really is no point to washing your mason bees. If you have harvested your cocoons and separated out the cocoons from the mites/mud/pollen balls, that's all that is needed. Any residual mite on the cocoons doesn't harm anything. The first foraging trip to flowers has mites on the mason bee again. If you have chalkbrood, wash with bleach. Our website has great pictures on pests and processes. Look at http://www.crownbees.com/home-gardner/harvesting for more information. - There are a variety of straws/inserts/reeds to be found on the internet. We have a new one out, the 'EasyTear' that doesn't need an insert, you can tell if it's used by a mason bee, and tears open easily. Reeds are also a good option as well. Lastly, a few questions asked about other mason bees beyond the Blue Orchard Bee. We're helping people be successful with the Japanese Orchard Bee in the east coast and are on the lookout to help others find/manage more. Osmia Algaia (Berry bee) in Oregon is a good one, and there are a few other Blueberry bees found. We're looking to help understand location, crops that can be supported, and nesting practices for each bee. Native bees are vital to pollination. It seems to change from year to year. So far this year........ !. Which of your plants is growing the prettiest flowers? Dr. John Kaiser is my new favorite this year. But I always love my Juul's Allstar orchid type. 2. Which of your plants is healthiest? Most look great though three plants (out of 35) had split stems at the bottom that I taped over with electrical tape. 3. Which is the most prolific bloomer? so far Kenora Jubilee, first to bloom and right now I have 2 in a vase, 2 ready to pick 3 close to opening and 5 other buds 4. Which is tallest? Pinelands Princess and Lady Darleen. Often plants that are supposed to be 4 ft. with 7" booms - for me are 7ft with 5" blooms (not enough sun) 5. Which is growing the biggest flowers? Maniac so far 6. Which plant's flowers lasts the longest in a vase? Any of the cactus varieties seem to do best for me in a vase. Lacerated petals - the shortest. 7. Which dahlia plant grew the fastest? My Ginger Willow poms, huge shrubs 8. Which plant started flowering the fastest? Kenora Jubilee 9. Which do you like the best so far? For me this is the same question as "Prettiest" but I still have a lot of new plants that havent bloomed. Last year I participated in a tuber swap through this forum and went from 12 types to 30 types I'd love to do it again next spring. Both of you seem to have completely different plants if you are interested in doing some trading let me know.

We have a storey and a half stone house near Guelph, Ontario built by Scottish settlers before 1860. They added a stone tail section 25 years later, followed by a wooden summer kitchen and woodshed, which was removed before we purchased. Except for the woodwork, the main part of the house has never been painted, Each time a new layer of wallpaper was added, the previous one was stripped off. The living room wall has a number of signatures and dates on the plaster. We added ours 24 years ago. We resurrected the upper story of the addition to make a master suite, adding dormers so that the windows could be above waist level. We also enclosed the back porch with glass. The kitchen and family room were our latest restoration/renovation projects. We are the third family to own the house. The previous family bought when the original 100 acre farm was divided into 5-15 acre parcels. When we bought, only one other lot had been built on. 25 years later, there is only one parcel that does not have a house. The local farm dealers finally know this as our farm, not the "old Freeman Wilson place." We own 11 acres. The second barn (finished June 20, 1889) and outbuildings are still well maintained. We raise a flock of about 60 purebred Rideau sheep. They are a very prolific breed. Our first set of quintuplets was born this spring. We have 2 llamas and a donkey standing guard against coyotes and wandering dogs. We cut hay on 75 acres owned by various neighbours. I stack while my husband, son and son-in-law cut rake, bale and deliver. So far this year I have stacked 1500 bales, only 300 with help. Later this morming there are another 170 bales waiting in the barn to be stacked and the same number waiting for delivery. The field crew were racing rain storms to get the hay up yesterday.

How exciting to get to do a whole house! If you paint the walls a decorator color, your eyes may get fatigued pretty quickly; these colors may be harder to cover when you decide to change them, and everybody changes things eventually LOL. Big huge blocks of color also highlight mismatches. For instance it's difficult sometimes to match purples, and if your purple wall is a little bit redder and your pillows or your comforter are a bit bluer, it will show up glaringly. I personally feel that white walls are "cold" looking & make furnishings look dingy. I think your idea about the neutral colors on the walls is a good one; extend it through the rest of the house, and add color with furnishings, window coverings pillows, upholstery, etc. Be sure to use patterns to break up blocks of color, ie plaids, florals, etc. You might also post this on the decorating forum: The very creative people over there would love to dig into a whole house project. Brick ranch suburban. If I had the money I would make it a little bigger and put stone over the brick and peak the roof a little more to make it look like a little cottage.

Mine doesn't really fit any of the above. It is a fairly modern ranch type home in a private rural setting. The front yard drops off into the front yard woods and other sides of the property are either bordered by native (woolly) areas, or else the cropland.

Seeing deer, wild turkeys, rabbits, squirrels are common occurrences and occasionally I see something a bit rarer like a red fox, a snowy owl, or even a mink.

I call it my "little piece of heaven here on earth".

Ours doesn't really fit the molds either, but it IS much like Chemocurl's. . . but it is a multilevel in a private rural setting.

Mine's best described as #9: A roof and four walls. Nothing special and not pretentious by any means. People casing the neighborhood will likely choose somewhere else to burgle (at least I hope so - hit twice in the past!)

Kind of #6 Rural Country Home, with a bit of Cabin in the Woods (#2), and Lakeside Cottage (#4) without the lake. I like to think of it as 7 idyllic acres with a slice of Heaven thrown in.

We might live in an "Ex-Urb" -- 30 miles north of Chicago.

We live on one level, but have a 10/12 roof over a full-height attic w/walk-up staircase. (The attic can become a 2nd story for a subsequent owner with the addition of dormers, making our 2900 sq ft home the zoned-maximum of 6000.)

We're on a 'country road' but only 3 mins. from town and RR. I don't know what 'style' this is! Country English/French? House is white brick and stucco with archtop windows and entry door.

Mine is kinda Rural Country but not your typical farmhouse.

We're in the country in a 1980 brick house (plain) but last year we added on a large living room with a huge stone fireplace and did major remodeling to the rest of the house so now my house looks like a "farm house" inside!

We did add on big flowerbeds and a very big front porch though!

Patti I just love your barn!!always have!!

I'm in a suburb of a small town just 20 miles to a very large metropolitan area...the nice thing is..we have two acres in a cul de sac and yet I can be downtown Atlanta in just about 30 minutes!

I live in a little upside down L shaped house amongst a lot of straight "ramblers". On a pretty good size lot in a 1970's neighborhood.

We aren't a suburb or a city...just a county neighborhood.

6. Semi Rural Modern Country Home on 5 acres. we only live about 4 or 5 miles from the closest shopping area but its a small town and would be considered rural by most of you.

5. Victorian splendor. It was built around 1905-1910, and it's definitely a Victorian, but it's a fairly understated one.

I Dont know what to say.Ours was a 40acre farm,pre civil war brick w/stone foundation, Circa 1700.ACol in the battle of Gettysburg owned it in 1822,I have deed with his signature.
we totally restored the home.Took us a year,but i love it.everybody that comes to visit tells us how beautiful it is.We have texas longhorned cattle up in field and horses,min donkeys.a windmill,we have one of oldest barns in our county.

We're suburban--typical California stucco. Bought it as a starter house and never moved up. Raised 2 kids in a 1500 square foot house.

The "Money Pit" on good days.

The "Little House of Horrors" the rest of the time.

It doesn't fit any of the options listed. It was built in the late 40s, early 50s, and has strong bones (and ugly but high quality steel siding; it's too "good" to think of replacing). Small rooms and cramped closets add to a plethoria of problems we didn't "see" when we had to choose a home fast.

The original house had two bedrooms, a bath, living room, dining area, and kitchen. A master bedroom, and mudroom/laundry/entry was added to the back of the original house. Then a three season room (14x28 or so) was added along the back of that at a later date. It's sprawling and has an odd "flow," but we will have lots of living areas...eventually.

It's slowly coming together and will be "cute and serviceable" (and colorful) when we've finished with it.

...If we live that long! LOL

One of the perks is we have a private well that feeds all the outside spigots. I can water all summer long at no cost. The well also runs the home-made geo-thermal type air conditioning system the former owner created. A/C at no cost; well watered lawns and gardens. Large lot with huge trees.

It's not so bad. And it's ours.

None of the options listed. We live in a mobile home in a nice little mobile home park. I love where we live. We are only a mile from town, but are far enough out of town that we have a sheep pasture across the street from us.
