How is Sears for repairs ... vs. Best Buy, Lowe's, etc..
Comments (6)I don't know who they use but we had a problem with our Kenmore front load washer years ago that made me swear to never buy from Sears again. One Saturday I got an E-9 error code (?) that was supposed to be a clogged drain. My husband checked the drain and it was clear. On Monday I called then up for service and the earliest appointment they would give me (for a 9 mo old washer that cost $1000) was 2 weeks!?!? Coincidentally, my dryer died and I had bought a replacement at Sears the night before the washer croaked (with my clothes stuck inside) but had to wait a week for delivery. So I went to the store Mon night and told them my plight. They said there was nothing they could do about it so I cancelled the dryer. Luckily my husband eventually managed to get the clothes out at least. Two weeks later I took the morning off to wait for the repairman to show up between 8 and 12. He called at 11:30 and said he couldn't make it. Then he proceeded to tell me the earliest he could reschedule was another WEEK! My husband came home from work for early to meet the guy in the afternoon. The exact SAME thing happened!!! When I walked in the door and my husband told me, I thought he was joking. Not. I called them up and told them they needed to get someone out there the next day. I finally got some manager that said they would get someone the next afternoon. About 4:30 that afternoon he called up and told me he was running late but would be coming. When he arrived around 6 PM, I told him the error code (just as I did when I originally called in the problem) and the guy immediately said a sock or something was stuck in the drain. I assured him that my husband checked the drain and it was clear. He confidently repeated that there was something in the drain as he headed to the laundry room. Well... he was right. It turns out that there are two drain hoses on the washer. The one that was clogged is behind a screw cap and accessed from the bottom panel. So after waiting nearly 4 weeks, it took him about a minute to remove the panel, unscrew the cap and pull out a sock. If it was so obvious what the problem was without even looking at the thing, why the heck couldn't they tell me to try that over the phone? Thank Goodness it was under warranty because somebody would be dead right now if they had charged me the $115 fee for that! Comments (7)NOpe, Depot and Lowes (and us and anyone else) only act as a transaction agent for you to buy the warranty from a third party--the same as the retailer does for you and the manufacturer. GE was the provider for many in the field last time I checked. THey were ours, but we've just changed providers and I can't recall what idiotic "protection service" sounding moniker we're using now. Retailers don't do anything but collect their 20% and route your call off to the third party if you have an issue. THe only thing offered by most extended warranties that does apply during the manufacturer warranty is coverage for spoiled food (refrigerator) and for damage from power surges. Everything else during that first year is covered (or not) by the manufacturer, and it's at their discretion as to whether or not to replace an item rather than repair it. Your "bonus coverage" is nothing more than smoke and mirrors from the warranty company. Neither the manufacturer nor the warranty company will be at all ameniable to replacing a "lemon" appliance unless you hound them unmercifully. It's still better to buy a decent brand and save your money on any after market warranty. If you're concerned about the ice maker in a fridge, pay the money to buy one without it and get a separate ice machine. Except that you'll be spending enough money to buy 2 "standard" refrigerators all over again. There IS no such thing as a brand with zero repairs. You'll read something bad about every single brand out there. The few complainers are much much louder than the thousands of everyday people not on the internet specifically to vent. If you want a recommendation for fewest repair issues, call a local appliance service company and ask them about which brand they get calls for the least. OF all the brands we sell, the Maytag/Jennair/Whirlpool conglomerate has more requests for the manufacturer's phone number to log a service issue than does the others. And, they have some of the worst service agents as well. Even so, we might get 1% of the WHirltag refrigerators we sell needing a service call that first year. Comments (2)Can't edit I guess? As for the steam, I guess that's not required. I thought it would be good for very oily clothes, and stuff that I don't want to fully soak, like throw pillows and things? Or does it fully soak on any steam cycle? Maybe it's not necessary? I use a floor steam cleaner and parts cleaners with steam are way more effective so seems clothing would be similar. Comments (92)No engineered stone is approved for UV exposure. It’s not an industry secret at all. None can go outside. Period. If your professionals that you worked with had done their jobs, you’d be an educated consumer and know that it’s not an exclusion just for Cambria. Direct sun from standard new windows shouldn’t pass enough UV to damage your floors, furniture, or e-stone. Standard windows already come with UV blocking properties, so if yours are so old that they don’t have it, you’ve got other issues about UV exposure in your house. Old windows need UV blocking film installed to avoid degradation to all kinds of interior finishes. Not just your e-stone. If it’s a relatively new window, that’s a conversation that you need to have with your window manufacturer. It’s defective. This is Not on Cambria. Or Silestone. Or Pental. Or Zodiaq. Or any e-stone manufacturer. New windows shouldn’t have issues with transmitting enough UV to damage your home.. Poop happens. This isn’t on Cambria.
