For me, I'd want all my doors to match. They certainly don't have to match the trim, but I like them to match each other.

I think if we could see photos of where these would be in relation to each other for your house, it would be easier to give an opinion, though. Will the doors be on the same wall? Adjacent wall? Do the antique/vintage & mismatched doors match your decorating style and other finishes? etc. :)

Another poster had some stained exterior doors (on the interior side) that didn't match the painted white doors in the rest of the room. Several people commented that it didn't flow together.

In the 19th c. sometimes they would create a hierarchy and if they stuck to it, it made sense.

A main door in a room (entry door, pocket doors) would be stained, and sometimes a very high quality mahogany for example, while secondary doors, (service doors, closets) would be painted to match the trim, and sometimes a different style, or less elaborate style. They went so far as to create jib doors as well, and wallpaper right over them.

I sometimes intentionally paint closet doors the wall color, for example, just because I don't think they deserve much attention.

We don't have a matching door in our house, many are salvage, others were scratch 'n dent from a local hardware store, others were from the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, none were purchased new at full retail. We have some painted, some stained and some au natural (Doug fir, and I can't decide if I want to stain them darker or keep them as they are, a decision I have successfully avoided for 4 years now).

The combo is pleasing to us, but we're not matchy-matchy types, and IMO how you will feel about them depends on your tolerance for non matchy matchyness (mine is off the charts high, but YMMV).

Our house follows the 19th century standard that Palimpset describes. A decorator once suggested that we paint the doors, but I cannot bring myself to do that, except in the playroom.

Our family room and kitchen doors are a mixture and they have always looked fine to me, except the French doors in the breakfast area that go to the porch...the room side should be stained and isn't.

The 1st photo olychick posted is the relationship my doors have to each other. Facing the stained door, my French closet doors are on the left. To the right goes into the dining room.

I am not matchy-matchy much, but every so often I'll find myself liking a theme or particular same-ness in something. Like my cabinets. I am going flat panel, but don't care that the raised rail parts might be different. It's the flat panel thing that counts.

lolauren, I laughed about matching my decorating style. I have no walls, let alone a style yet. :) I am a decidedly firm, uncompromising, died in the wool ... eclectic person and style. My home is subject to whim, since I'm doing it all myself.

Palimpsest, I am familiar with the 19th century door hierarchy. I forgot about that, though. Lots of secret passage doors were created about that time in larger homes, too, with the doors matching the woodwork vs. standing out. Cool.

man, I'm loving these doors, though! I don't want any of them to match in style and I'm finding cool things at the reuse center. I want to find some of those doors that have 5 or 6 panels, but they're horizontal vs. vertical boxes. I like those. I'm also thinking of some 7 to 8' French doors to frost, then hang over a 6' wide patio slider. Using something similar to barn hardware..

Just experimenting.
