Need help with layout of tile .........Pics

Loaded with questions. I don't have a designer so it's just me trying to come up with how to lay out the tile backsplash around the stove and sink.

There is not much space around the stove 31 inches on side wall and 31 inches in front of the stove. Then I have the short area that is the pass through. I'm wandering if I should leave the granite backsplash off of this area and do tile. Would it look bad having granite backsplash in the sink area that is across the room with tile and not put granite BS by the stove?

I want to do tile under the cabinets and 6 inches around the bottom of the window with a border using same tile but alternating light and dark color tile.

Please don't ask me to draw cause I suck at it and you wouldn't be able to make heads or tails out of it away.

You want to have continuity throughout the kitchen, but at the same time, it'd look strange with 4" of granite, and 4" of tile there at the window. For the same reason, though (continuity), if you DO decide not to have the granite splash there, you're going to want to keep the layout at the same elevation (full tile starting at the top of where the granite is in the REST of the room). that not only keeps the darker band at the same elevation around the room, but it'll also elevate that band high enough so that it shows over the top of the stove.

I have been looking at home recently and the most common backsplash I have seen in the more expensive homes is the tile to the countertop. I think that most of the people who have the 4" granite and then put tile up seem to have added the tile as a later thing. It looks more planned and consistent with the tile to the counter and no 4" granite splash. (JMHO).

If you want a small tree at the right end of bed (near corner) then putting in a Hydrangea that's NOT a tree, won't work. You'll need to find another place for it. Earlier I recommended PG Hydrangea which can be grown as a small tree. Burning Bush, common Lilac or Philadelphus coronaria are other large shrubs that make good small, multi-trunk trees. For planting a large groundcover bed, you'd want to arrange plants in rows with the leading row in line with the front edge of the bed, but set back a uniform distance from it. Usually, the same spacing between plants works well as the front set back distance... so let's say for Hosta, 18". Then space them 18" apart in the row. 18" Behind that row is another row laid out in the same manner, except that you would place these plants not directly behind the first row, but offset them so that they are staggered relative to it. Continue the process until you have reached the back of the bed and filled it up. Since you are planting around trees, just don't place a Hosta where the tree is. You can come close, but not so close that you are struggling with tree roots (the tree being the Dogwood) as you don't want to disturb its ability to grow. When the Hosta grow, they will nestle around the tree trunks just fine. Though you PLAN the planting beginning with the first row, you'd actually install plants beginning with the last and work your way backward so you are not crushing installed Hosta as you plant more. That's the manner in which you'd approach laying out a normal large bed. Now let me contradict that. If your bed is only 4' deep from front to back, the above instructions would only allow you to place 2 rows in the bed. That'd work OK, but if you have sufficient Hosta and want a full look more quickly, keep the plant spacing the same, but adjust the row spacing so that you can fit in 3 rows...say each being 12" apart. (Spacing would now be 18" o.c. x 12" rows.) Whether you install whole Hosta clumps or split them up is a factor of How many you need vs. how many you have available. Split them if you're going to need a lot of Hosta or if the clumps are so huge they just need splitting.

Quite honestly, I like the first pic, and if it were going to be anything different, I'd remove all but the four corners and center dots, and maybe move the corner dots in a tile or two diagonally, so they'd be in 6-8" diagonally from the corners.

The reason you aren't getting any responses is that it's impossible to offer lay-out advice based on photos. We've no idea how large the space is, where doors and windows are, where doors lead to, etc. We need a drawing with dimensions. First of all, you've done a great job on everything I can see of this house and your choice of furniture is very nice. Given the small dimensions of the living area I'd choose a not too large glass and metal coffee table to create a feeling of more space. Also, even though fireplaces are usually the focal point of a living area, given its placement I would ignore that concept. Your living room so far is very sparse, basically a couch, TV and coffee table, so I would place the chairs you have at right angles to the couch which would also give more places to view the TV. I would also increase the size of the carpet in the living room so that it covers almost the whole area, and choose a polypropylene rug with a pattern which is easy-care with a baby and will introduce some color in what so far is a very monochromatic space. I would also use one for the dining room for ease of cleaning with a somewhat different but complementary pattern and color to give added interest. Perhaps you could have a wooden chair of some kind, even a rocking chair, placed next to the fireplace but as part of the living room design, angled toward the coffee table.

Thank you for the help. I'm late on asking these question due to already ordering the granite and it will be installed this coming Wednesday. So I'll stay with the 4"granite BS.

But should I do the backsplash behind and side of the stove with the tile or paint or what else could be done around the stove. I'd like for something easy to clean. BTW, I'm going to ask how much it would cost for our handyman to tear out the old cabinet and make a dummy cabinet above the stove so I can have a microwave/vent above there.

I vote to start the tile at the granite withOUT the granite backsplash. Its a personal thing at construction, but most often a change/addition AFTER construction

Wow, that is beautiful Bill. That is where I got the idea from is pictures I'd seen online and I liked it.

Ok I have another choice to go with. We're having tile put in through out the living room, great room and hall ways. The living room is sunken so to let people know they need to step up or down, I'm looking at a mosaic to show there is a step.
There is the landing coming in the front door stepping down into the room then there are three entry's going to the kitchen, great room and hall stepping up. Here is what I liked and brought home to show DH and to see how I like it. We are also tearing out the tile in the kitchen replacing it with the same tile going in the other rooms.
Kitchen tile is ceramic and the new tile will be porcelain.
If I use this mosaic tile on the floor will it look good going around the wall at eye level at the stove?
