I have an older mattress and my 3" memory foam makes it wonderfully comfy. I got it when I had sciatica and it made it possible for me to sleep. I don't have any problem with it being too hot, though I've heard others complain. I can't sleep with feathers, they make my nose bleed, and I've tried latex foam, and while I like it as a pillow, it doesn't work as a mattress topper for me - it's too soft and doesn't "push back" like memory foam. Ok Here's the question. Why should one spend what seems to be a good deal of money for a 8" foundation for either a 3" firm Latex or Memory foam topper? Why wouldn't a good firm inexpensive 8" foam base work? After all you're really only sleeping on the topper. I don't see the point of expensive custom multi-layering. I priced a Talalay latex mattress and the 8" queen size foundation was over $2000 and the 3" topper was only around $400. Both were the same firmness so what was I getting with a $2000 base? Even with Memory foam there's all sorts of pricey combinations but in the end there's the 2" or 3" topper your sleeping on. What does the base really do other than support the topper? (And yes I've read about the air flow foundation advantage but it seems a little far fetched to me...) Also does anyone know where I can purchase a good reasonable 8" foundation for a platform bed?

We bought one about three years ago...they were still very expensive at that time and I was screaming at DH that we had a brand new mattress and didn't need that mattress...but he wouldn't take no for an answer after having seen one and tried it at the shop... three years later my opinion is this....That was the best investment we have ever made. The mattress is so comfortable and I sleep the night through almost every night. If I wake up it is usually once to turn over...Ours is a Temper-pedic and it you are considering one...I say go for it..you will not be sorry....I've heard people say that they are hot and uncomfortable in the summertime...well it doesn't get any hotter than Texas in the summer and it is completely comfortable...I think people who say that haven't actually slept on them...they are fabulous....the best investment we have ever made.

Thank you all -- Geez, there is a world of info out there now...I had checked *some* threads here, but they were so-so...don't think I saw terri's thread. That link was great, walkin. Oddly enough, we decided to get a 1" Venus pad at overstock--I think they're there because Foamex went out of business--amazing discount. If we need any more thickness (I know 1" is very odd, but it's 8 lb. foam), we'll get another less dense pad for on top of it. Should be very interesting to see how it's different from what we have now. I'll keep the idea of the thick quilted mattress pad, tracey -- that might be a great way to address the heat issue. I also read on one of the gweb threads that if you put shelf liner under the pad, it will keep it from shifting around on the bed. Great! I have too much Ikea shelf liner I bought in the as-is section a few years ago -- so I know what I'll do with it now :)
