opinons on memory foam mattresses

DH and I are in the market for a new bed. I love my memory foam pillow, and the 2 and a half inch memory foam topper from Costco, that sits atop our current mattress. I know you can buy a pure memory foam mattress about 10 inches thick, although they're quite pricey. Does anyone have one of those thick memory foam mattresses? Do you buy a box spring to put under it?

My foam topper currently does not cause any problems with sweating due to heat build up, but I'm wondering whether this might be a problem with a really thick memory foam mattress. Perhaps I'd be better off buying a traditional mattress with a top layer of memory foam. Any opinions?

We bought one about three years ago...they were still very expensive at that time and I was screaming at DH that we had a brand new mattress and didn't need that mattress...but he wouldn't take no for an answer after having seen one and tried it at the shop...

three years later my opinion is this....That was the best investment we have ever made. The mattress is so comfortable and I sleep the night through almost every night. If I wake up it is usually once to turn over...Ours is a Temper-pedic and it you are considering one...I say go for it..you will not be sorry....I've heard people say that they are hot and uncomfortable in the summertime...well it doesn't get any hotter than Texas in the summer and it is completely comfortable...I think people who say that haven't actually slept on them...they are fabulous....the best investment we have ever made.

We just love our memory foam mattress. We bought the one at Costco. I haven't noticed it to be hot in the summer, but I did put a matress pad on top of it (its not recomended.) We have had ours for almost 2 years. We put ours on top of our old box spring. We sleep so well on this mattress! I dread the thought of trying to get a good night's sleep on a regular mattress at a motel when we need to stay at one.

That sucks. It is time to do some research. First, who did you buy it from? We have sent mattresses back for loss of consistency but it takes some effort. Helps if it is a model we still have on the floor. That way you/we can weight test it and see how deep xx pounds sinks on the display vs yours. Second, how is your foundation? If it is on a bad boxspring then the mattress will just sink. Third, how is the bed under it? My uncle had a nice wood bed and somehow only used two cross slats, one at the head and one at the foot. This wasted a mattress set we sold him but we got to the bottom of things. Do some investigating yourself. Especially if the frame or the wood bed is not right you want to make it right BEFORE the mattress company gets involved. Not entirely honest I suppose but some mattress companies hide from warranties often enough I don't feel bad. Oh, and search for any stains on the mattress and try to clean it before they come over. Thats another out they have.

So, lets think this through. You need a flat surface that mimics a boxspring. A boxspring is plywood, springs, and a covering. Use your plywood. Drill some small holes here and there. Cover the top of the plywood with a thin layer of batting and a mesh cover. Staple it to the plywood. Also, have you considered a memory foam topper and a standard mattress. The toppers are wonderful. I have one on an older mattress and it is great. Enjoy your daybed (I love mine) and your mattress.

Sarahlee, It somewhat surprises me when you say that your topper is gel foam. When I was in the market for a new mattress I told all the sale people that I did not want foam because of its reputation for being hot to sleep on. I'm extremely bothered by being too warm when I sleep. One of the salespeople told me about the gel foam and how it is sensitive to your body temps and makes for a cooler sleep. I was skeptical, but with a money-back guarantee I did purchase it and have been very pleased. I have never been in the market for a topper, so I wasn't even aware that they made a gel foam one. It would seem that if it is a topper only, the gel layer can't be that thick. Seems like most replies you've gotten have been relative to regular foam, rather than the gel foam.

We have a select comfort which we absolutely love. It may be expensive but it will be the last bed we will ever have to buy. When we get different aches and pains we can dial it up or dial it down making it harder or softer.

We love our Costco MF mattress. Our new motorhome came equiped with a sleep comfort mattress, and I could not sleep on it as the "boxy" sides bothered my lower legs as they always find a way to hang over the edge. Replaced it quickly with MF mattress. One of the best reasons to love it is that I rarely detect that/when my husband gets up during the night...getting up just doesn't disturb your partner.

Unless something's changed in the past couple of years, memory foam mattresses consist of a layer of memory foam (usually 3 to 4") on top of a less expensive foam. I don't remember what to look for as far as the larger layer of foam goes, but I do remember reading that one had to be careful in choosing because it is that foam, not the memory foam, that usually breaks down.

We bought the T pedic one about 3 years ago. I love it. I wish we could put that much extra weight in the RV. I hate the regular mattress we have in there. And it's not the typical rv mattress, its a regular one.

We did put the foundation under our t pedic. We have a california king waterbed frame. It made it easier to get out of, unlike the reg. mattress we had in it for years without the springs. It's a little harder for me to get into because it made it really high, but the bed in the rv is even higher!

I have been looking for a new mattress my DD insist the "Select Comfort" are the way to go they have one and have never been sorry for the investment as I only have a single bed here now I believe thats the way I will go.

I have the 4" Memory Foam Topper. I love it. My Friends have the Memory Foam Mattress. They spent the night once and I let them sleep in my room figuring they were use to Memory Foam. They thought my Memory Foam Mattress was to hard.

I'm really not picky, I can sleep anywhere.
