My extra firm memory foam mattress became extra soft

I bought it less than 2 years ago. Loved it the first 6 months or so, it was so firm... but then it started softening... and now I can't sleep on it, it's soft as a pudding, my butt sinks good 7-8 inches deep! I'm 190lbs... It's Simmons brand. Can someone explain to me if this is common to memory fo mattresses because I don't know anymore if such thing as 'a mattress that lasts more than a year' exists anymore... I need a new one, but I'm not sure what to buy...

That sucks. It is time to do some research.

First, who did you buy it from? We have sent mattresses back for loss of consistency but it takes some effort. Helps if it is a model we still have on the floor. That way you/we can weight test it and see how deep xx pounds sinks on the display vs yours.

Second, how is your foundation? If it is on a bad boxspring then the mattress will just sink.

Third, how is the bed under it? My uncle had a nice wood bed and somehow only used two cross slats, one at the head and one at the foot. This wasted a mattress set we sold him but we got to the bottom of things.

Do some investigating yourself. Especially if the frame or the wood bed is not right you want to make it right BEFORE the mattress company gets involved. Not entirely honest I suppose but some mattress companies hide from warranties often enough I don't feel bad.

Oh, and search for any stains on the mattress and try to clean it before they come over. Thats another out they have.

Well, I bought my memory foam mattress 8 years ago at Costco and it is still as firm as when I bought it. Plus, the price was great. I think it was a Novaform brand and you can get a 14" thick one in queen size on special at the moment for about $500 from Costco.

Certainly you can do this. I have done this many times in historic houses where neither a King, nor a Queen, will fit up the stairs. I would not do it based on expecting longer service life out of a bedding set, however. The X-Long Twins will break down at the same rate as a standard King, though you are correct that they're easier to flip that way. Shifman makes a "Zippered King" which has two industrial zippers on each side of the matt. When zipped together they are virtually indistinguishable from a standard King. I've been after Royal-Pedic to do the same thing, but they have resisted to date saying not enough customers have asked for this feature. If you do go with a pair of Twin XL's, what you can do is buy extra firm hotel-grade units, put a 3" Latex topper over them, and then tie-in all in with a high-quality mattress pad that has spandex in it. I would spot clean it with lots of water and hand rinsing. Then squeeze it as dry as possible with clean towels then hang it outside to dry and air completely. It may take more than a day to complete, but bring it in each night to avoid rewetting it with dew. I wash all kinds of weird things in my washing machines, but I think I would draw the line at that, both for fear of damaging the bedding, but also for fear of overwhelming my machine when it became fully saturated. When we got our new pillow-top king-size bed this summer, off he went to a Macy's sale (first time he'd shopped for linens alone, lol), and returned with these and we love them. Susan, I am a mass of aches and pains and being on the road can be a trial of uncomfortable beds. If we're in a place for more than one night, we look for Embassy Suites, which has upgraded its beds over the last 4-5 years, or Homewood Suites, a Western franchise that is an incredible bargain, considering what you get. Also, I always ask for lots of extra pillows so that I can make myself a soft-ish cave that helps mitigate the creaky joints and muscles. But really - try the Macy's Charter Club brand!

My sister bought a memory foam mattress and she and her husband had issues with heat retention. I gave them a 3" natural latex foam topper and the problem was solved. Memory foam works through a chemical reaction that loosens the bonds with heat, making it softer where it is warm and more firm where it is not warm. It is also quite dense, reducing air flow. What happens is that you sink into the mattress where you are laying and the mattress becomes softer where you are laying, so you get trapped in the hole. This will not happen with natural latex. It does not change density when exposed to body heat. Factors impacting mattresses sleeping hot are body weight and mattress firmness. The heavier you are and the softer the mattress the more likely you are going to sink into the layers and create a trap for body heat.

I am no expert but I know not all memory foam is of the same level of quality, and it actually varies from batch to batch. The way my ex and I dealt with the durability issue was to finally buy a natural latex foam mattress.

I found this site incredibly helpful and we did end up buying from this store. But no matter where you live the material is really educational.
