Remodeling Bubble Too?

I figured that, with home sales trending down, and more people either choosing to stay put or being forced to (because of price declines) we'd see an upswing in remodeling and fixing up current homes (since people would be there longer!).

However, from an article I saw posted on another site, this doesn't seem to be so. Here is the link: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/bus/stories/021908dnbusremodeling.3731509.html

Here are some quotes: "In a quarterly comparison, nationwide home remodeling expenditures have fallen about 10 percent since their high in 2006."

"Studies back up those concerns. Average returns on a home remodeling project have fallen from 82.5 percent in 2003 to 70 percent last year."

"Home improvement store giant Lowe's Cos., for instance, is predicting its same-store sales this quarter will be off 3 percent to 5 percent from a year ago.

And Home Depot Inc.'s profit in its last quarter was down more than 25 percent."

So, was there a remodeling bubble tied up with the general housing bubble? What will happen to channels like HGTV, nothing, something? If you're only going to get 70% back from a remodel, why do people still do them right before they sell (or try to sell) their homes?
