I need help with some ideas for my new living room...

Hello,

I just purchased my first home, and I was wanting some input on how I should decorate the living room such as color scheme and accessories. I want the fireplace to stand out and keep a modern style.

I'd focus on furniture placement first as it's likely to be difficult in a long narrow room like that. Sketch out the room to scale and start plunking in standard furniture sizes. I think a small settee and two chairs flanking the fireplace might work.

To figure out the rest of it, you need to figure out what you like. Start looking at pictures and collecting them to be able to put your own personal stamp on the place.

I would also put a large piece of art over the mantle. I would get rid of the dark panels on the window and use only the Roman shades. I am not a fan of the look of small panels with short rods. If you feel the need to keep them, could you at least use a full length rod over the window and eventually hang real draperies there? I also think changing the lamps will help. I think you need to lighten the look a little because what you have now is all dark and very heavy: furniture, accessories, panels, rods, floors. If you get rid of the panels and rods, add some other cream touches like pillows and a rug with a cream background and a couple other light colors in it. Add some light accessories on the coffee table. Fresh flowers work wonders in any space and are available at your grocery store for less than $10 a bunch. Lilies are lovely and you can just drop three stems in a vase for a pretty, loose, light bouquet. I think you can easily make this a pretty room with just a few little changes.

oops, Denita, no pics. here are a few from the Houzz store, just for brainstorming. there are lots of consoles that combine housing for the cable box et al with lots of extra cupboard space, so you should have plenty of options. Ikea makes a lot of great pieces in this particular category too, so you could look there. You could maybe even go superlong to take as much advantage of that wall as possible, especially if you go with white or something else that blends into the background a bit.

Have you looked at Article? do you like this combo? I just recently got the black leather Sven sofa and that exact chair for my room. I love them! I also got the Sven leather bench/coffee table. prices are very reasonable. Then find the accessories. bring in some art or a rug w/color. I really loved the sven in the blue. this would look great w/your floor and cream wall color. (it is cream, right, and not the yellow in the picture?) Here's how the Sven sofa, bench/chair look: The pouf was from Amazon,,,the Tables and MCM credenza I've had and refinished myself. Rug I had, but I want to get something lighter. No!!! The orange paint has GOT to go lol. Great idea, Holly! Im not a very creative person, so I thought I could fet some advice. The TV is another issue. I wanted to hang it above the fireplace, but it is an operable wood burning fireplace, and I have read that it is not such a good idea to hang it there.

First we'd have to know the dimensions of your furniture, how many pieces, colors etc. to give you some ideas. Is there a rug going in there? Can you take pictures of your furnishings? We need more information.

I am purchasing all new furnishingsfor the living room which is why I was asking for some advice. (all of my current furniture will be used in the family room). The room dimensions are 17x11 if that helps.

Maybe you aren't as creative as you would like to be, but you probably know what you like and what you don't like. So that's why you should get a bunch of magazines and on-line pictures to start seeing what speaks to you and what doesn't. We now know that you don't want orange. What other colors don't you want/what colors do you love? Do you have a Calico Corners or JoAnn's nearby? Try browsing the fabrics and figure out what and colors and patterns you like: stripes/plaids/polkadots/floral? This is where you can start, and then we can work from there.

Your room looks really lovely! Personally, I agree that figuring out possible/ideal furniture arrangements would be a good place to start. One option might be to put two identical sofas along each wall with a flat panel TV hung above one.

Since you are painting are you planning on painting the ceiling? Painting it a shade or two lighter than the walls will help rid you of that bowling alley look.
Next I'd do a scale floor plan.
I wouldn't count on doing drapes by the windows near the fireplace if you plan on using it, instead I'd look for two storage units for under those windows. I'd focus on making that side window appear bigger than it is.
