Color crisis - new husband, different ideas...

A while back I had posted a picture of our house, we are getting ready for a major exterior facelift and I've hit a wall in my decisions. We are doing white windows, with grids (no issue there) And Weathered Wood dimension shingle (no issue there) but the problem is we are looking at new vinyl siding now as well, 4" clapboard, no shutters, and removing the fan over the front door. We like the color clay for the siding, and also painting the garage door with clay. But my amazing wonderful loving husband, would like to do white for the soffitt and white down the sides of the house and garage, sort of like an accent and I was wanting to go with an all over single color look. (except for the actual windows of course. I just CAN'T picture how our house would look with that WHITE trim on the sides and across the top.

If someone could help with a little photo shop - I would be most greatful. My husband is amazing, and I love him dearly, but I had a picture in my mind of the look of the finished project, and this just wasn't in the picture for me. I'm having a hard time with the white accents.

I have a very low ranch. Clay.
The fellow doing my siding decided it'd look good with white corners & trim. I was too dazed & overwhelmed to even think about it. I'm lucky that someone donated the siding to me from a demo job at Andrew's Air Force Base.

I hate the white corners. I'm not thrilled with the windows, but at least they're regular. I'm grateful to have siding, and maybe this year I can get it on the back of the house. In the meanwhile? Get one of those virtual programs & create it.

I know it's such a mess it's odd that I dare even call it a style. But it's not my vision, either. Now that I can think. It's way too country for me. Oh!!

Someday I'll be able to actually work on the outside. Right now, it's actually cleaned up.

Here's your picture, and I agree with you. I don't like houses that look like they have been outlined and colored in.

With pension programs disappearing, it seems to me that some middle-aged people's idea of borrowing against the equity in their houses in order to consume is foolish, in most cases. It is easy, as our employment income doesn't increase as fast as the cost of living, to decide to continue living at our earlier level, withdrawing equity from our home to finance it. Far better, it seems to me, to decide that we are going to live within our current income. And not only that, but to take the long term view and see whether our asset base looks as though it will fund an extended retirement. On the other hand, with a lot of the baby boomers retiring in a few years, there'll be a shortage of staffing, and quite likely a number of people may well be offered incentives to continue employment rather than retiring. In contrast with the current situation, where a number of pre-retirement highly paid employees are being offered incentives to leave, so that companies can take on lower paid younger people to replace them. But would it be wise to count on that? I think not - unless one has some definite plans for a source of self-employed income following official employment, to subsidize that (inadequate, on its own) retirement income. Retirement planning is different than it was 30 years ago, for people on average are living longer, so need a larger fund on retirement in order to be able to eat and operate comfortably in their last year of life. As pensions die, our equity in our homes becomes more important as one of our sources of funding for our retirements, along with tax-deferred retirement programs and regular savings. As interest rates have dropped, with the requirement to pay part of the earnings in tax, and put part of current income with principal to maintain purchasing power of our shrinking-in-value dollars, there's little actual current gain ... in many years, none at all. If we have no net gain on investments in a given year, it becomes even more important, in fact crucial, that we make new savings in a year in order to add to that highly important retirement fund. The exact opposite of pulling equity from our house-asset now in order to live as high on the hog as we've been used to, in current years. Not only that, many unsophisticated investors are unwilling to get involved in even the equity-based mutual fund segment of the stock market, with the reduced net income that most face annually due to the substantial payments made to the managers, let along being willing to learn how to manage direct investment into the stock markets on their own, with a potentially higher rate of return (as the shrewder investor puts at least part of the money that the mutual fund manager was making into his/her own pocket). In response to the accountant remark, its not the IRS, its the state and not an income tax audit. I have paid a CPA $11k to do a forensic audit on me and according to them the state owes me $4k. This state is going after anything they can get so they won't have a shortfall. They hired 49 new auditors for this. It was a sales tax audit. I was told 20 years ago not to tax on vehicles by the DMV because I an not a dealer. They were wrong. I have to pay the sales tax on all the cars I have sold through my business. I have 11 people I know going through the same thing. The reason it has taken 3 years is they kept asking for extensions because they are short handed. So thanks but no thanks for your smart a$s comments, you have no clue what you are talking about.

What you will do is take a deep breath and hold it for a count of ten. Repeat. Kiss the baby. Another deep breath. No go to the store and borrow a fan deck. Buy one if you have to, but they'll usually let you borrow one for a week if you put a deposit against it. See which colors look like they might match on paper. Write down every color number that you think might even possibly work. Then, when baby is sleeping, go through the color numbers with your husband, checking them on the fan deck and see what he thinks. Choose half a dozen (not more) that you both think might be okay. Keep your page with the numbers on it. Take the fan deck back to the store and pick up sample cards for your half dozen numbers. See if you can get sample pots for all your half dozen colors. If not, buy a quart each of your top three. When you or your husband have a moment, paint a large sample of each of your colors. If you don't have unfinished wall to put it on, use scraps of drywall, or sketch paper, or whatever you can find. Put the samples around your space so there's some blank space between, and you can see all the finishes you want to match. Leave them in place for awhile so you can see them in different lights: Bright day, overcast day, evening, electric-night, rainy (if possible). See which ones you both like best. If none look right, try the next three. You'll get there. And if there's a Kelly Moore fandeck, you can brink it home and check against the paint that's already there and see if you can match the colors. Good luck.

If he really wants to install white tiles on the floor, at least keep the grout color matched or similar to the tile.... You're correct to be leery, as dark colored grout combined with a white tile will look cheesy/lousy in most cases, in addition to the intricacy of the herring bone pattern install. I'd start with your shower/wall tiles first, after they're fully installed, you'll have a lot better idea of what to color coordinate for when choosing for your flooring tile... Good luck !

I agree with you no white corners/edge trim. That is very common here in Wisconsin. I told my husband that it looks like clown houses. (Needless to say, we don't have contrasting edge trim or gutters on our house. We do have contrasting window & shutter trim).

Here's an example of clay-ish hardiboard with white corners. This is the house next door to me - some people like the look and consider it a design element and some find it an *attempt* at a design element and just a lot of busyness.

I actually like the soffit and facia to be a different color than the house and the same with door/window wraps. As far as corner posts I do like them on the right house. And I think you house could be one of those houses. Will you be leaving the crown molding over the windows and doors? If so I think the white corners will add a good architectural element.

Check out Certainteed Vinyl siding website. It will allow you to upload your house and change materials and colors or use an existing house that is similar to yours. Great tool.

Honestly, I think it depends on the house. I don't think the one DLM shows looks bad. I see it occasionally here but not like it's a big fad. That's a tough one when your husband likes something you don't. Especially when it's his house too and if he's like my husband, he doesn't give an opinion often (meaning most times he just goes with what I like LOL).

In New England it's very common to have painted wood on the soffits, corner, door & window trims. But our trim is wider than the photo of the OP's house. We have either cedar shakes on the walls or painted clapboards on the walls. I think the photo of the house that dlm2000 posted is quite attractive, but perhaps I'm looking at it through my New England lenses.

I think both styles have their pro's and con's and it's a matter of personal taste. I personally have seen both and like them both.

I know it's what we tend to do, but really it's not fair to say your choice is right and your husband's is wrong. The thing is, now that you have a new husband (and congrats on that), life is going to be all about compromises. What you need to do is get creative and find a compromise that you both like and can live with.

Take a day and drive around some neighborhoods to see what others have done. I know the options may appear to be limited but seeing a visual may help you both to figure something out together or better yet, maybe one of you will see that the others choice may not be all that bad after all.

I don't recall a lot of colonials around here with that treatment but googling 'colonial house new england' turns up a lot of handsome examples. As tina noted, things like that depend on the house. Unless you're going to do more elaborate trim around all the windows, I don't think I'd accentuate the sides with white because the window trim is minimal as it is now.

Oh my gosh, woman! What were you thinking marrying a man who wants a say in the decorating. Lock him in the basement and let him out when it's finished.
