Ready for a pool - what are first steps?

My wife and I have a 1 acre wooded lot near Tomball, TX and we are finally ready to start planning our pool. I've got a few basic questions, and would appreciate any input!

1. Is there an online "pool school" where I can learn the basics about construction, different options for cleaning, decking, etc? I always find that an educated consumer makes the best choices...

2. Can anyone suggest a good "backyard architect" in the Houston area? Our eventual plan for our backyard includes both a pool as well as a large covered outdoor kitchen / living room pavilion (full bar and kitchen, fireplace, TV, etc.) We are likely going to do it in two "phases" - pool first, then the outdoor living room / kitchen. My wife and I REALLY need help in thinking about the different configuration options in making a long term plan.

Thanks for any suggestions/advice in this regard!!!

As with you we are also starting our pool planning stage. Like yourself we have many questions. I believe we have both found one of the best places to find our informaion. Take a look on any of the pages below and you will see many fine examples of pools, equipment and information at every turn. In fact we may have found the wrong place to find our information. Since I found this site my wants list has only grown since I have seen the many beautiful pools, backyards and settings around their pools. Like you I will have to do my build in stages. Several of them.

Do a search of Texas or Tx at the top and you will find a whole lot of post from people of Texas.

You've helped immensely! kmcg: Love all those pics you posted and they have given me lots of ideas. bungalo_house: I think I need to get some more pieces to fill out the corners to make it work. Once the crown is done I can play around a bit more--as is, I move everything then the trim guy moves it all out of his way. If anyone can find me the lyre/harp table that would make my day (and not on eBay as I'm not going to pay an arm-and-a-leg for shipping on something sight unseen after my chair fiasco). You've got me working back in that direction. I think I'm just going to start calling all the antique stores in the area. BTW: anyone like this floor lamp (with a red shade) better? Good for you CR!! I had the bypass on 05/03/00 and you can bet your boots I'd do it again! Why I waited until I was 55 yrs old to have it-I'll never know. The best advise I can give you is to have ALL of your ducks in a row. By that I mean for your insurance company. If you have had to go to any type of Dr. for back, feet-whatever ailments that undoubtedly was due to your weight, call them & get a copy of any of your medical records of that visit. When I turned in my required info for the Ins Co-I added a great cover letter to them...explaining how I needed them to allow me to have this 'tool', to help me get my life back. AND..don't get discouraged if they deny you the surgery? There's an appeal board that will guide you & a great percentage that get approved after that! I weighed 325 lbs the day I went into sugery and lost 220 lbs by July of the following year! I had 12 lbs of tummy skin removed and literally got down to 105lbs but my surgeon made me put on 25-30lbs. Imagine that! Today, 8 years later, I weigh 134. I have enclosed a link for you..this is where I did my research, found my surgeon & a zillion other things-even you can see the big list of Insurance Co's that pay for the surgery. This site is a wealth of information as well as before & after pics..message boards, the 'library-full of everything, Q&A's, etc. If you register into the site? If only I could! The adjoining walls in those corners aren't the same width, so diagonal is out. The Belgian jelly cupboard is 22" deep x 33" w. It would protrude into the foyer entrance since that wall is only 7" wide. The china cabinet is 54" wide, so it won't fit diagonally because of the narrow wall leading into the kitchen lounge. It won't fit in the corner, or against the wall, where the sideboard is because there's a heat vent in the floor and the china cabinet is too low for a heat vent deflector--that's why I needed a "leggy" sideboard. The walls in the corner between the two windows are less than 48" wide. And, there's a heat vent in that corner, too. This old house was custom built for a Duke professor and his wife in 1939. They saw the plan in a magazine. It was made for their furniture, I suppose! thanks

OK, look, some of these decisions can't be made till the furniture is actually in the room. Sizes and locations of furniture and how they relate to each other and the fireplace, how light or dark the space is...these will all impact the total look. Your carpet, fireplace, furniture swatches, and wall color all look good with the rug sample you show. (I believe it's the Alvarez, no?) When the furniture arrives, put it all together with the area rug and take a picture. Then we can help you with accent colors and accessories. Here's a good rule (and one reason it's impossible to accessorize ahead of time): 60-30-10. 60% of your main color, 30% secondary color, 10% accent.

We used a company called Cy Fair Pools. We were very happy with him. He is the owner of the company and was out at the job site everyday. Very impressed. His name is Scott, 832-483-2279. We never had a pool built and he explained and showed us the whole process before they started digging. I think he's one of the honest guys out there. Very rare to come by with these pool builders.

stewart--i posted a reply on my thread (Long's Build in NW Hou)....I just found yours.
It actually takes longer to get the bids, plans, design, pick colors, and get that pool exactly as you want it...than the build does.
It took us about 6 weeks to get bids (we got 3), design the pool and tweek a lot of things...add this, add that, decide on equipment and upgrades...and for HOA approval and yard prep....3 weeks from dig to swim.
Cypress Custom Pools is my builder--they are on Grant and Spring Cypress. Look at their website, it's their name with the www. and .com ....best of luck to you.
