What color should I paint patio furniture?

Recently purchase some outdoor furniture that looks like rod iron. It needs to be repainted.

What color do you suggest?

I saw an outdoor cafe at a nice hotel that had white rod iron type furniture w/ forest green cushions and forest green umbrellas - very striking. What do you think?

First thought was, white gets diry, I think black, an oil rubbed bronze or a charcoal color is your best bet.

I'd paint the wrought iron a color that complements your house or trim color.

Rustoleum has a toll free number you can call with questions - you can find it on the website or it's probably on the can. I'd call them, and see if you can send them those pics. That doesn't look right to me. I just painted my patio furniture with Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze metallic spray paint, and it covered much better than that. I used a total of 6.5 cans for 4 chairs and a table base that are probably of similar size and maybe more surface area than your set since mine included the seats. Did you prime first? Maybe there's a problem with the primer or lack thereof?? Anyhow, I'd call rustoleum and see if they have any suggestions -- maybe you got a bad batch of paint or something (in which case, I'd demand replacements or money back, since 13 cans of spray paint isn't cheap!)

Yknow, IMHO, I wish we all could drop the "D" word from our vocabulary. If we love it , if its well made, if its functional - then a place can be found for it, period. In other words - your china cab is just fine, and it does look good on the side rather than viewed head on. That said of course we like our rooms freshened up now and then - but I think you can jazz it up in other ways incl choosing a new color ILOVE greens/browns/tans, but the pea soup color Im kind of tired of. (or so it looks on my monitor anyway, which has been known to be wrong.) Definitely think about going deeper richer. Dont know if Penny's or Anglo's deep dark colors are good for you but it gives you an idea at least of what deeper/richer could do for you. If all else fails maybe you could just take the living room color and just go a few steps darker/more intense with it. Let the DR be cozy and intimate complete w/ a big china cabinet - why not? The DR should relate well to the LR, and that would be one way of doing it. Minor quibble - I would think about that wall space where the china cab was - is there a third pic that could fit in there? With cabinet moved, that wall becomes very significant. Not liking just the two pics , needs to be 3 I think..... Or some other wall decor or arrangement .... minor thing, so perhaps just wait for the inspiration or right thing to come along.

Given you don't know what future apartments will look like, or more importantly what dimensions of future rooms will be, I'd recommend against the sectional you linked. It seems that at least once or twice a week people post here seeking help on how to build a room around a sectional that just doesn't fit the space. A comfortable sofa and a chair with an ottoman will give you more flexibility in the future.

There are two schools of thought on drapes in a room. Some people like to have them match the wall color or be just a shade or two darker or lighter, some people like a contrast. If you're able to buy ready made because they'll work with the size of your windows, then look to see what's available that you like. If you buy ready made they're usually returnable, so you can bring some home and try them. If you have them custom made you will have a lot more options. Just definitely a solid color because your bedding is the star. I would wait until the bed arrives so you have everything you need to be coordinating with. I don't know if you have ever done this before, but if you see a shade of blue paint you really like but it's too dark, you can ask the store to cut the tint in half. I also think the paint on your walls currently isn't a bad match, just too dark, so if you know what it is, you could try that cut in half.

Will you be using cushions of some kind on the furniture, or just sitting on the wrought iron pieces themselves? If you plan on doing cushions, you might take that into consideration.

I think mammie has a great suggestion about complimenting your house or trim color. What color is the body of the house where you will be using the wrought iron pieces?

White will stay cooler overall than any dark color, but the white may age faster and need repainting sooner.

I agree with all of the above-- plus I think you need to consider the style of the set and where you will put it. I have a wrought iron set that just wouldn't like right in white or green.. on the other hand, white really sets off the detail in the garden sets with lots of vines and flowers in the casting.

I plan on doing this very soon to my patio set. Right now it is green, almost a verdigris, purchased from BJ's 10 years ago. I plan on painting it a satin black. I already have cushions in stone, similar to a muslin color, with a market umbrella to match. My house is a cream color with white trim and black shutters and doors.

Rust-oleum has some nice colors. My neighbor just painted hers with a textured black and it looks nice. I painted mine anodized bronze several years ago. It is almost a dark brownish/black that goes with about everything.

Thanks everyone for your feedback and great suggestions!

I need to keep in mind what will look good for a while. At this point, the house exterior needs to be painted and I will likely pick a new color scheme. I'm not sure about that yet. Sounds like I can't go wrong at this point with repainting the patio furniture black/satin black or another dark color. Yes, there will be cushions. FYI, when you enter the family room you look directly onto the patio (through 8' sliding doors), so I am trying to take that into consideration, too. I will go check out the Rust-oleum colors. Thanks again for all your help.
