Perhaps your B-I-Law never had lung cancer in the first place. There was an article in our local newspaper a few weeks ago on the subject of the difficulty of correctly diagnosing lung cancer. Our neighbor, a long-time smoker in his late 80ties, was told by his physician, after some basic preliminary tests, that it looked like lung cancer just a month ago. However when he went through all the sophisticated tests with a lung cancer specialist, this turned out not to be the case.

What I took away from the newspaper article is that a biopsy is what really tells the tale, and that is not often done. Did your B-I-Law have such a biopsy?

kfc37 you are right in what you got from the article in the paper. What happens when you get a chest x-ray is sometimes they see a shadow (no idea why) & who ever reads the x-ray says you might have lung cancer. A biopsy which is very painfull can tell you if they need to operate or what they need to do. This comes from experience as I had lung cancer & knock on wood I am still here. Great news about your BIL.

Kfca37, I am sure you are right in some cases. Unfortunately, DBIL did have lung cancer. They found it about 18 months ago. He still has a long road ahead of him and this crazy spring weather with all the pollen isn't helping him breath better.

I have two friends that were diagnosed with lung cancer several years ago and they are both doing great. And yes, they both had biopsies. Wonderful news about your BIL. Keep us posted about your niece. Sleroderma is very serious.

My sister was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2002, with her doctors giving her at most 12 months to live. She decided to try radiation & chemo, in that order Because she had been diagnosed wih emphzema (sp?) a few years previous, her doctors were unwilling to do a biopsy/surgery, thinking that alone would kill her due to the poor condition of her lungs. She apparently was cured of the lung cancer, but in talking to my brother's wife, who is in the medical field, recently, both she & my brother now doubt that our sister actually ever had lung cancer, & personally I was a little dubious of that diagnosis also even a few years ago, but had never mentioned it. Was odd that we were all thinking the same thing.

Perhaps my brother felt that way as about 12 years ago, he had some great pains in his stomach area, and tests pointed to him having an obscure type of cancer. Additional test product was sent to a lab in Oklahoma. The results came back that yes, he did have this cancer, He then had exploratory surgery, but nothing remiss was found. His dr. got back to that lab, they rechecked records, & oops, it turned out that his files were switched with another man with the same first name & almost, but not quite, the same last name. How is that for coincidence?

My brother, after rejoicing that he never had cancer, contacted a firm of malpractice attorneys in Detroit, & a nice settlement for his "pain & suffering" was rapidly made. Must have been difficult to break the bad news to the other guy.
