A wonderful update about my Mom/lung cancer

Today was mom's appt. with the cancer doc and we were sure it would be "get ready for chemo" time.

Mom had lung cancer and the surgeon thought it was from a colon cancer she had 5 years ago.

The cancer doc said he thinks the cancer was not one that had spread from her colon/rectal cancer. He said that previous cancer was only a stage 1 and he is sure all of it came out (plus she had radiation).

The "good" news is that all signs point to the lung cancer as being an unusual type that affects mostly nonsmoking women. And...the great/stunning and wonderful!!! news is that the surgeon said the small tumor was taken out completely (surrounding tissue was clear). So if her blood tests come back OK (no cancer markers) and if she passes her next PET scans (the last one showed the lung cancer and no more) there is a good chance she is now cancer free!

What wonderful news, and such a relief for you and your mom. I will pray that she gets the all-clear on her follow-up blood tests and PET scan.

Kathy- I am so sorry for you and the risk that your neighbor is going to have to endure. She is way too young to be so sick. I'm sure she has your friendship and support when she needs it most. She is blessed to have you. I have certainly been guilty of spraying paint and breathing it. I've learned a lot since those days. I yelled across the alley at a pregnant girl who was spraying in her garage without a mask. I told her I was mothering her by teaching her that she was going to be feeding that baby airborn paint dust. I have spray painted in the garage and the fine overspray dust covered everything. A safer way is to wear a respirator and put the item in a large box out of the wind to paint it. Try to snag a refrigerater box to paint large objects.

Hi, Kay. Yes, she is going through all of the paperwork, and she is getting a bit overwhelmed. My dad left everything to her, and my sister-in-law, who is an accountant, is the executor of the will. She is doing most of the work, but they are waiting on the official death certificate before the house can be put in my mom's name. She can't sell until that is done. She also has to get rid of the car, since she doesn't drive, but one of my brothers needs a trade-in, and he is going to buy the car from her ( at a fair market price, of course). My dad did have his affairs in order, and all of the investments were in my mom's name anyhow, so she doesn't have too much to do. Right now she is slowly going through the house getting rid of things she won't need in an apartment. They lived in the same place for 44 years, so it's quite a big job, although in recent years they did begin to clear out a lot of junk. The biggest job is already done. My dad was into model trains, and had a huge set-up in two rooms in the basement. He had literally hundreds of cars, plus little villages, etc. He kept all of the boxes, but it still took us the better part of a week to dismantle the whole thing. The trains are going to be divided up between my brothers, and my mom didn't have to do a thing. We have been very fortunate that there have been absolutely NO arguements over money or disposing of posessions. I have heard so many stories about how a death in the family can bring out the absolute worst in people, but this is not the case for us. All of my brothers and I just want our mom to have as smooth a move as possible, and to end up with as much money as she can get. She is anxious to sell, she finds there are just too many memories in the house, and she wants a fresh start. Hopefully, she can be settled in her new place before the winter weather begins.

I just heard that the hospital may send her home tomorrow, they have her on a pump for pain and i am not sure if that will continue at home, but her dh said she wants to go home. Marie... I hope your DD and DH continue to improve. Thanks for the note, you have been so kind to me in the past. and helped me with other things. Ellie.... aw, thank you! I often feel, and say, that I wish I could be as articulate as some of you on here. I appreciate your kind words. I imagine as we all age, we will be in these situations more often than not. And, of course, one of these days...... no one can say when..... we will each be the one whose hand is being held. All I know is that we are not promised a tomorrow....so live today as if it is your last. I have not done that by any means, ever, in fact I am one of the worst for worrying about things I cannot change, but sometimes things happen to put life in perspective for you. This is a wonderful place, this KT, to come and share and ask for advice, and for prayer and good thoughts. And also to pass on encouragement to our 'cyber' friends as they need it. Bless you all!

How gratifying to get such wonderful news!

Thanks for bringing it - such messages make our day!

It really does pay, in most cases, to treat one's body (mind and spirit, as well) with care and respect. Sometimes the extra resources available when our protective systems have not had to battle the results of our irresponsible habits have been enough to mean the difference between successfully fighting off nefarious interlopers and not being able to succeed at such an important task.

Kathy....GREAT NEWS!!! I'm so happy for you and your Mom. I hope and pray you get a good result from the blood and PET scans. If I could , I would do a cartwheel with you, but I've always been a klutz. Love, Dottie

Oh that is good news to hear. I'd be in the line with the klutz. Me doing a cartwheel wouldn't be a pretty sight. I'll pray for a good out come on the PET scan and blood work.
