Help me chose a rug, please!

I'm looking for a rug for my bedroom. It will fill the space to the right of my bed (about 4x6) when you walk in. So it will be framed by right wall (no furniture), back wall with dresser (see below), bed, and wall/door where you enter.

Floor is medium brown (maple?) hardwood. Walls are BM Simply White. Bedding is all white with a little cream. Headboard (which I didn't get yet) will probably be bone or beige or chocolate, suede or leather. The dresser against the wall that faces you when you walk into the room, which the rug will abut, is this:

The rest of my apartment is also white walls with Spanish and eclectic furniture and shades of gold, eggplant, burgundy, etc.

So here's my dilemma:

Do I want a Spanishy rug in a reddish or cinnamon shade (or a pattern)?

Do I want a leopard pattern?

Or do I want something pale/neutral "Zen"?

AND if you think a particular color headboard would go great with your rug suggestion, I would love to hear about that, too.

A picture is worth a thousands words, can you post one?

The cinnamon/reddish rug sounds best to me... I am definitely not a leopard print person so I would run away fast from that. Neutrals would always be OK but might cool a bit too boring/neutral with all the white. What kind of room would you like to have - warm, relaxing cosy? Cool, calming? Whatever leopard print evokes to you?

I'm with those who like the house color. It's mine, in fact. Regarding the garage doors, those are the trouble spot in the typical home. Ideally, the garage would be detached and hidden, your chauffeur would drop you off and then make the car disappear too. These days, instead of hiding garages discretely hidden behind hedges, we have big, klunky utilitarian garage doors trying to grab attention from what should be a compelling and delightful front entry. So, my recommendation is to not try to punch up the garage door in any way. THAT's not where you want people to look. Your painter had the right idea, but still went the wrong way in painting it the typical bright look-at-me white. I'd take the house color itself a shade or two two darker and paint the garage doors that color. It's so nice that you do love the front door color, which is lovely with the gray. I agree with Bronwynsmom, though, that more contrast would fix the washed-out effect you're seeing from the street. Just look to something else to add more. Flowers are ephemeral, so not so great to depend on even in the warm seasons and gone entirely in winter. How about establishing more permanent energy with a pair of large, decorative, winter-hardy pots? They could hold flowers in summer, seasonal decor in winter. Yellows-oranges-reds are across the color wheel from blue, and the complement would really make the door area pop. If that's too colorful for your tastes, you could add contrast in a quieter manner by going dark against the relatively pale colors, black, very deep green, eggplant, or...?

"All the trim in the house is a dark stain. I want to paint it all white because that will definitely brighten things." Paint colors don't exist in a vacuum, it's always about how they look next to another color, and bounce back light from windows and bulbs. Bright white woodwork and doors will make the Kilim Beige walls look dingy and dull by contrast unless you have bright white and Kilim Beige in upholstery and drapes too. Don't mix "muted/dirty/greyed" shades with clear and bright shades unless you have a lot of experience. Stick to one or the other. A better picture of that, taken in daylight or with lamps from another room will get you better advice. ************** "I was going to paint the main living room cool tones, gray, light blue, white etc. but after reading, I'm worried the room will look washed out because of the bow window that allows for so much indirect daylight. So I am leaning more towards warm tones on that side of the home" Warm tones look warm only because they bounce back warm tones from the incoming light. When the incoming light is already "cool" because it's north light, it gets really hard to see the "warm" and undertones are going to be driving you nuts. I had a warm yellow in the kitchen, and the light coming through leaves and bounding off the grass turned it a gaudy green every morning ... ******************** I would immediately paint that fake wood wainscoting Kilim Beige to make it vanish. Remove it later, but right now it's just plain ugly. What I see are the DARK, light-blocking valances in the kitchen, pale mauve (?) drapes in the living room, and the almost exclusively beige and tans in your furniture, and no color in the artwork or accessories. No rugs? That's a far larger influence on the "blah" feeling than the dark woodwork and beige walls. Save your money by keeping the doors until you have drapes and rugs that add color and interest. Paint should be the last decor thing you pick, AFTER furnishings and drapes, because there are thousands of colors of paint. Trying to find a rug to go with the paint is far harder than finding paint to go with the rug.

Thanks for posting that pic. I don't want a rug so busy or colorful that it will detract from the dresser. I'm now rethinking the whole animal-print thing. I think I want something Spanishy but not too bright, as I want to maintain a restful atmosphere. So I think that I will look for something with color (paprika? cinnamon?), as Tinan suggested, more faded/muted. Nothing that will shout.

Again, open to any suggestions. Anyone bought a rug in this style that they like? Looking to spend less than a grand for a 4x6 (or 5x8 if necessary).

Could you describe a Spanish style rug? I did a google search and didn't really see much except Spanish tile prints or rugs that have "Spanish" in the color description, like spanish moss.

Maybe check Overstock and see if something catches your eye. If you post a pic of what you are thinking then maybe you would get more suggestions and help narrowing down your choices.

Without a picture I have no clue. But have you considered a runner instead of a rug? That's what I did in our bedroom. I really like it. I had an extra runner I put there just for the heck of it, and I haven't moved it since!

I ordered this rug from JCP, and the color did not work for us, but it was beautiful. I ordered the Paprika color, and that is really more the color that it is like actual paprika spice more red vs. the brighter orange than it appears on screen. We were looking for more orange vs. red.

It arrived quickly, and we were able to return it to the catalog desk at the store for no additional charges for return shipping. So you may want to give it a try.

Or else, take a look on Overstock to see which rugs have good online review.

I don't see a strong red rug in the midst of everything else being white and creams - walls, bedding, headboard.

What I would look for is a tile-like design, as in the designs of the Alhambra, in softer colors, maybe even one soft color with the tile pattern.

If you are going to bring in touches of color in accents in the room, then something like this could work:

Les, we have that rug in a runner in our front entrance!

This one is indoor-outdoor and I would not want it in a BR because I think I would want something softer there--just personal preference, but there are TONS of rugs in that trellis-Arabesque style.

Have you looked at Pottery Barn's wool rugs? Just search under "wool" and see which ones grab you. Since their options are limited (and all very nice) it might help you determine which direction you want to take, even if you want to buy elsewhere. Looking at photos online of bedrooms from a company with a look you like is another way to help figure out what best suits your style. I wouldn't rule out an animal print until you decide what look you're after -- might be just right with your eclectic and elegant combo. Be sure to confirm the right size before shopping. My bedside rugs are 3x5; with nightstands adjacent to the bed, this size ends flush with the foot of the bed.
