Greenhouse week 11 pictures

The greenhouses are all full now, bursting at the seams. All we have to do now is sell it all.

This time of year gets pretty intense for me. I should be 2 people. I could work full time for myself and work full time at the greenhouse. On top of that bigbaby and I have our oldest son's wedding coming up on June 14th. I won't be around much until later in June. I'll try to pop in once in a while just to check up on you all. I'd ask Gayle to keep an eye on bigbaby for me, but, that would be like asking the fox to watch the chickens.

Watch out for the snow heading into Mn! Can't remember where you are, but I hear northwestern part is possibly going to have another 8-10 inches!

The idea for Picea abies 'Gold Drift' and Picea pungens 'The Blues'(Thank you Sam, that was a careless error) was after visiting Boyko nursery in Oregon with Bob Fincham. Jim's an amazing grower and tender of conifers and he has a great number of ideas displayed through his plants. He had several very large combo's of these two wonderful plants and I was smitten. According to Bob, 'Gold Drift' will outgrow 'The Blues' over time, suggesting that if you choose to do this you start with a larger 'The Blues' and things will slowly even out. Mine appears well set to do just that. Thank you Sam also for more backround info on 'Hosta la vista', which is indeed a great combination name both of it's location and a common saying. The former Governator would be proud. :) Thanks for showing us all the potential of this monster Clement, THAT is a monster, but beautiful tree. It seems likely mine won't want to stay in it's pot too long! Sam, my graft was acquired from a local nursery that, if you haven't, you HAVE to visit. Dragonfly farms is run by Heidi Kaster out of Kingston and besides several thousand other varieties, her conifer offerings are well over 1,000 varieties. Yeah, as in three zero's behind a one. She gets stuff from all over, Iseli, Buchholz, R&R, some newer smaller nurseries in Oregon and she's been a great enabler for me over the last few years. Hi again pm2! Those cinderblock beds were an absolute bear to build for me! The ground there is solid ledge, with maybe up to 3 inches of soil in spots. I had no help at all, and built the things with a shovel and a five gallon bucket to move the load of compost from the pile to the beds. It was a lot of work to make them level. Sooooo, once the bottom level was done, that was pretty much the hard part. The second layer was cake (although of course it meant filling with more soil/compost, bucket by stinking bucket!) I staggered them like bricks, and they are fairly stable. I also filled the holes with compost for added stability. It is great to be able to sit on the edge while working, and I also grow things in the holes. I think in the photos you can see what remains of alyssum and parsley. I love that deutzia too. My first and so far only deutzia, from Bluestone. Quite a beauty and if I recall correctly, rather long-lasting. The siberian iris were from a swap, and I want to say that they were from Sue (vtskiers). The lily - isn't it beautiful?! I'm a sucker for apricot-colored lilies and roses! I went outside and couldn't find a tag, and then came in to check my invoices. It may - MAY - be Fairest. I say that only because that seems to be the only lily I have that I can't find a picture of, lol! The pictures of other lilies on my invoice(s) don't match this lily, so I'm guessing it's Fairest - although the description says its a cross of an asiatic, and I thought this particular lily was a type of Oriental. Anyway, I will try to discover what it is. The caterpillar was some nasty thing that either stuck me or bit me, several times, before I even saw it, and made my hand swell. They were everywhere that day! I don't recall the name of it. (Gee, I'm beginning to realize that I'm pretty forgetful!) Where was I? Oh yeah, lol! I posted about it here and someone gave me an answer. But when I first saw it hanging off my hand, I didn't even think it was a living thing. I thought it was a piece of paper or something! And lastly, my camera is a Canon EOS Rebel XT. My DH plays with it more than I do, and it really takes some nice photos. Hope Santa brings a camera for you! :) Dee

Hope i get to finish this post. Am having big problems with my MSN2 and it freezes up on me before i finish writing. Hav got a new one,and DD is going to help me set it up. We did'nt get a freeze up here and my petunias are blooming away. A friends mother finished picking her second crop of butterbeans thursday.She's down around Clarksville. Than 15 miles east was a heavy frost and everything was killed. Deer season started today and the idiots are out among the responsible hunters. We have a good bunch close to us but alongthe Mulberry river are some idiots and cattle,dogs and whatever will bite the dust.Hopefully no humans will be shot. Since i live in the woods we have leaves all over the ground. gld am like you and love to see the leaves on the ground. Still love to walk and kick the leaves as i go. Some people never grow up. Will have to rake enough up to cover my pots with piles of leaves,th rest will have to stay till spring. My tomato plant has grown another three inches but still no blooms. the little mater bit the dust. So i only have one plant now. ceresone and William,i hear you about the chase for tomatoes and it starts about ten minutes after you look at your first seed catalog in the winter. LOL!!!! William,i'd love to hear about the gardening practices in China, Do you get to see anything of chinese gardening? Will you have access to a computer while there? Christie, That was an ugly thing you did, telling us about eating watermelon while our mouths were watering LOL. i can't think of the kind we grew. (old age!!) but it's an old standby,medium size,round,darkgreen,with the wavy markings,red meat.Which one am i talking about? It does well here and has a great taste. Hi mcpeg. You asked about the tiny plug trays that were being dumped. When Joel asked about them he found out some were being dumped because the seeds had been mislabled. Therefore they had started the wrong plants. Others were being tossed simply because they had not been sold and were past their prime, although still healthy plants. Or, were you asking about the plastic trays that the plugs come in? Those do get dumped/recycled but not reused by the grower because of disease issues. Generally the plug trays are about 1 foot by 2 feet and have anywhere from 50 to 512 "pots" in a tray. The 512's are tiny, smaller than a thimble, whereas a 144 is about the size of a large thumb. Each "pot" has a drainage hole in the bottom. Any ideas on alternate uses would be entertained. Gayle, I'd sure like to see pictures of your coleus. Ron

Those flowers are so beautiful. It probably doesn't seem like it to you, but to me it seems like they have grown amazingly fast.

June 14th is a great day for a wedding, my parents were married on that day 89 years ago come this June.

Should have said they would have been married 89 years but both have passed on, Dad in 1980 and Mom in 1990.

Beeeeutiful. Such pretty colors. Now I hear we'll be dropping to the low 30Â°s starting tomorrow night. That means I've got to drag out some blankets and cover my hydrangeas again. I've had them covered all winter, and just yesterday I uncovered them and cleaned them out, all ready for spring/summer. GRRRRRR.

WOW!! I wish I could just shop by pulling plants outta your pictures!! I'll take that one and that one and that one!!They are alll soooo gorgeous...we're supposed to have some 30's and 40's next week, so I'll wait another week before buying my annuals!!

Just beautiful! I keep looking in our garden every day for signs of "sprouting" LOL. But spring is definitely here so it's just a matter of time.
The greenhouse plants are gorgeous, and so are Blossom and Lucy. They seem to be having too much fun.

I want all the bright pink impatiens. They're my favorite. All your plants are so healty and sturdy looking. You sure have done a great job getting all the plants ready. You'll probably sell out before June 1--that'll give you a couple weeks before the wedding.
