Kitchen of the Week: Beautiful Blue in Martha's Vineyard
Mirroring the beauty of its lakeside setting, this open cottage-style kitchen supports a laid-back lifestyle
An outdoor setting as stunning as this warrants an equally stunning kitchen. This Scandinavian-inspired kitchen is set on Lake Tashmoo, on the northern coast of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. Elizabeth Swartz Interiors designed it to echo the simple, relaxing and beautiful surroundings while adding storage and an open workspace. “The client didn’t picture this particular home becoming a gathering space for extended family or friends,” Swartz says. “They wanted it to be their own little escape.”
Limited wall space and many windows meant little room for upper cabinetry, so Swartz looked to other areas for storage. The team converted a mudroom in the back of the kitchen into a pantry with a refrigerator and full-height cabinetry, keeping the main space open.

This is a walk-through kitchen with entrances to the outdoors and main portion of the house, and its square shape presented a challenge at first. Eliminating a potential island kept it open and easily to maneuver around in.
