Greenhouse week 7

Things are really taking off now. The plants are filling in so there is more green and less soil as you look down the benches.

The geranium house.

A few are even starting to bloom.

On another thread there was a discussion about dumpster diving. Joel was at a greenhouse on Tues. that was dumping plug trays of plants by the pallet load. He salvaged these 4. One tray is bronze leaf begonias, my favorite.

The New Guniea Impatiens are starting to bloom.

I was trying out my macro lens on some of the blooms.

Coleus cuttings are rooting and will be potted up soon.

Some of the osteospermum are starting to bloom.

Candy corn plant.

And Laurie finished another pottery display.

I just realized I didn't get a picture of Blossom this week. Bigbaby will have to woop up on me.

Thanks for looking.

Sounds like you need to go custom. Hit craigslist and freecycle for windows and wood.

Well, I found this post just as it's about to expired! (Aug. 13th) Life is NOT boring at our house!! Last Sunday. morning the dog got under the house and pestered a.... SKUNK for about 30 mins-untill it sprayed!...not the dog! She's quick enough to get out from under and clean around to the back before it sprayed! But the smell seeped throught the under bords into the house! Our termite people came out Mond. and set a trap that morning. At 5:PM all of a sudden we smelled her again, so thought she was caught. But the dog kept going crazy at the living room wall. So we figured she had had babies. Wed.- termite guys checked the trap and..no skunk yet. WHY did hubby let the dog out AGAIN with the board off the opening to under the house????? Now the terrier has eather injured the skunk or it's just too scared to come out and get caught! SssssO, NOW we eather have a DEAD skunk or a very hunger one that the termite guys are going to have to go in and get! More skunk stink will get spread throughout our cute, little house...clothes, drapes, carpet... Anyone want to liven up your lives and come over for some excitement? I'll let you know when the termite guys come back to re-check the trap and collect our intruder "one way or another!" Friday- The termite guys are avoiding us - didn't come to check the trap today,(Hope they work on Saturdays)! Otherwise it could get VERY interesting Mond. when hubby calls them and askes why they didn't come back out Friday! "I actually enjoy being at work!", untill things clear up at home! LOL P.S. Sunday,Hubby asked if I didn't want to go to the MALL... with HIM! Then out to eat, then book shopping! This is a guy who wants to know how to get and get out of stores as quickly as possible. He wants to know where the items are so he dosen't have to look around! I can't get this guy to go shopping for Christmas! So all is not lost! At least we don't just sit home anymore!

You're right, Nora, the larger black tubes are feeder lines and the small ones are individual water lines for the plants. A lead weight goes on the end of each one when it's placed in the pot. The hoses are used to water hanging baskets that will be placed above the geraniums. They're just laying there to get warmed and straightened in the sun. The "FedEx plants" are Bidens. They're very vigorous and most of them we were able to salvage. Soon they'll get small yellow flowers. Joel doesn't ship any plants. At least not yet. About 90% of the sales are retail and 10% wholesale. Thanks for looking. Ron

I almost forgot about this post I made, so thank you for reminding me! Here's a sizeable update on how things went during the winter months. Even in the December armageddon, the lowest it got was 7-8C inside the greenhouse. Outside it was -19C at the lowest. You don't even want to know what my heating bill was. But just know that it wasn't anything like what I would've spent if I heated it fully with electricity, I also used s small space heater on the other end of the greenhouse to not use as much propane. But now that that's out of the way, here are some pictures! The Smith Red Sanguinelli Brown Select Satsuma is finally growing. Gold Nugget also finally doing something a whole year later. It's hard to fit the entire persian lime into frame but here's my attempt Valencia orange was covered by mango flowers. The Cara Cara became so big, and yet no fruit... Another view of the valencia that I had to prune back from the top Rio Red grapefruit also finally bushed out the way I wanted it to. Meyer lemon has over a dozen fruit on it. Pickering mango in full bloom next to the nules clementine, which didn't flower. Coconut cream mango is also in full bloom. Up close shot of puckering panicles Nules that I had to cut back There's some other stuff I plan on introducing to the greenhouse, like sapodilla, white sapote, and other dwarf varieties of trees. I also forgot to photograph the papaya, guava, and avocado. The papaya got some root rot but it's coming back, and the avocado is also finally coming back after not doing anything for an entire year. The guava is flowering and pushing new foliage. So there you go, how everything is going! I'm going to get rid of the crappy green plastic and putting on 8mil clear plastic instead before it gets cold again. I'm also considering making the greenhouse larger within a year or two, but we'll see how they grow this year.

Gorgeous and healthy-looking plants!

I have a question since you're the plant expert - a relative dug some of her Lamb's Ear and gave to me. I planted it across the front of the house last night and turned the sprinklers on, but they probably were lightly watered only about 10 minutes. This evening, they were all limp and sad looking. Is this normal? I hand watered this evening but they haven't perked up any. I sure hope I haven't killed them already.

Thanks!

Ron, do you keep those tiny plug trays? Why would anyone dump plants in the garbage from a greenhouse? Have I missed something? Thank heavens they have a new home!

I'm still liking the Coleus. I planted two large Coleus and about 10 babies. Just a week in the ground and they are growing fast.

I have one Coleus that is a Beautiful Deep Burgundy (almost Black) with Purple Blooms. It's raining are I would take a picture. It is beautiful though.

Love the pictures.

Hi mcpeg.
You asked about the tiny plug trays that were being dumped. When Joel asked about them he found out some were being dumped because the seeds had been mislabled. Therefore they had started the wrong plants. Others were being tossed simply because they had not been sold and were past their prime, although still healthy plants.
Or, were you asking about the plastic trays that the plugs come in? Those do get dumped/recycled but not reused by the grower because of disease issues. Generally the plug trays are about 1 foot by 2 feet and have anywhere from 50 to 512 "pots" in a tray. The 512's are tiny, smaller than a thimble, whereas a 144 is about the size of a large thumb. Each "pot" has a drainage hole in the bottom. Any ideas on alternate uses would be entertained.

Gayle, I'd sure like to see pictures of your coleus.
