Greenhouse week 7

Things are really taking off now. The plants are filling in so there is more green and less soil as you look down the benches.

The geranium house.

A few are even starting to bloom.

On another thread there was a discussion about dumpster diving. Joel was at a greenhouse on Tues. that was dumping plug trays of plants by the pallet load. He salvaged these 4. One tray is bronze leaf begonias, my favorite.

The New Guniea Impatiens are starting to bloom.

I was trying out my macro lens on some of the blooms.

Coleus cuttings are rooting and will be potted up soon.

Some of the osteospermum are starting to bloom.

Candy corn plant.

And Laurie finished another pottery display.

I just realized I didn't get a picture of Blossom this week. Bigbaby will have to woop up on me.

Spring is sooo close but yet so far!
I love the geraniums, candy corn plant is a new one for me, I will have to watch for it.
And BTW that red door with the yellow birdbath would look splendid over here! ;)

Savona, welcome back, hope you had a great vacation! Your Wave baskets are spectacular and love the trellis they are hanging on! I got the hint Marcia LOL ;) This is the first year with Corydalis sempervirens, they were WSÂd this year so IÂm hoping the will self seed all over the place too, the photo doesnÂt do this plant any justice, they sure are a real pretty graceful plant when you see it in person. I realize that Rock Soapwort blooms in the spring but these were WSÂd in April and they are just now putting on their show. Oh good to hear Susan, another cold zone gardener who can overwinter Gloriosa Daisies, gives me hope for next year, Kat3 says they are a perennial for her too. Thanks so much for the nice compliment; if I can catch the seed from the S. obtusa, I will save you some, you might also want to try Sanguisorba menziesii too, has nice dark maroon blooms, blooms forever and very easy to WS. CrazyDaisy, I too love your Moonshadow Sunflower and your unknown pretty flowers has me stumped, have no idea what it is. Laurie, still waiting for my 'Boogie Woogie' to happen. LOL For sure IÂm going to order more Orientpets, but IÂm going hold off and order next spring, IÂve read that they have a better chance of survival if you plant them in the spring in our zone. Al, is that Plectranthus argentus growing at the base of you Canna, very pretty! I tried growing some from seed, but they rotted, IÂll try again next year. Martha, I really like your Amaranthus, especially that second one. LOL. I see you mulch with straw too ;) Colleen, stunning close ups!!!! You're right, Nora, the larger black tubes are feeder lines and the small ones are individual water lines for the plants. A lead weight goes on the end of each one when it's placed in the pot. The hoses are used to water hanging baskets that will be placed above the geraniums. They're just laying there to get warmed and straightened in the sun. The "FedEx plants" are Bidens. They're very vigorous and most of them we were able to salvage. Soon they'll get small yellow flowers. Joel doesn't ship any plants. At least not yet. About 90% of the sales are retail and 10% wholesale. Thanks for looking. Ron

Just gorgeous,and i'll take at least 2 of each.LOL What do you use to write on your name tags?? Everything we try tends to fade away.Last year i bought some little bottles of scribbles paint(squeeze bottles) and wrote directly on the pots.That seemed to be the only thing that held up.But then if i want to use the pot for something else later,i literally have to scrape it off.There's gotta be a better way. Oh i do use venetian blind slats for markers,recycle,ya know. TIA Kathi

Gorgeous and healthy-looking plants!

I have a question since you're the plant expert - a relative dug some of her Lamb's Ear and gave to me. I planted it across the front of the house last night and turned the sprinklers on, but they probably were lightly watered only about 10 minutes. This evening, they were all limp and sad looking. Is this normal? I hand watered this evening but they haven't perked up any. I sure hope I haven't killed them already.

Brenda, Lamb's Ear is pretty tough. Have patience, it'll recover.
Candy corn plant is Cuphea micropetala. Kids love it.

Ron, do you keep those tiny plug trays? Why would anyone dump plants in the garbage from a greenhouse? Have I missed something? Thank heavens they have a new home!

I'm still liking the Coleus. I planted two large Coleus and about 10 babies. Just a week in the ground and they are growing fast.

I have one Coleus that is a Beautiful Deep Burgundy (almost Black) with Purple Blooms. It's raining are I would take a picture. It is beautiful though.

Hi mcpeg.
You asked about the tiny plug trays that were being dumped. When Joel asked about them he found out some were being dumped because the seeds had been mislabled. Therefore they had started the wrong plants. Others were being tossed simply because they had not been sold and were past their prime, although still healthy plants.
Or, were you asking about the plastic trays that the plugs come in? Those do get dumped/recycled but not reused by the grower because of disease issues. Generally the plug trays are about 1 foot by 2 feet and have anywhere from 50 to 512 "pots" in a tray. The 512's are tiny, smaller than a thimble, whereas a 144 is about the size of a large thumb. Each "pot" has a drainage hole in the bottom. Any ideas on alternate uses would be entertained.

Gayle, I'd sure like to see pictures of your coleus.
