Radon in my Home!

We are in the process of selling our home. As part of our contract, the buyer had the house tested for radon (agreed to split the cost to remedy if radon found).

They used a $15 kit available at Home Depot that uses activated charcoal that you place in your basement for 48 hours and sent off to a lab to be analyzed.

Well, the results came back yesterday showing a level of 9.1 pci/L. The EPA recommends no more than 4.0.

We're asking the buyer to retest using a certified radon inspector ($100 to test) to verify.

Does anyone have any knowledge as to the accuracy of these $15 test kits? Assuming our radon level is indeed high, does anyone know of ways to correct the problem that are not too costly?

Thanks in advance!
