Master Bedroom-windows/drapes

The framing for my new house is going up this week. I have to decide on all the windows. I didn't realize that there are egress window requirements. I was hoping to use the custom drapes from my prior home, found out that I had casement (skinny windows) and now I have to use single hung due to egress and also because I have choosen to only have the muttons in the top part of my windows. So my window must be at least 3 feet wide. The casing is craftsan style 3 1/2 in wide.

I was hoping to have 2 windows on either side of my bed. With the size of my bed I only have a total of 9 feet left for the windows. take the 3 feet and then the 3 1/2 casing on each side, I have very little ( a few inches) left and I'm worried that my drapes (valances/sheers) will be too close to the bed and to the window. My bed has a frame on the top taking the top to 68 inches.

Does anyone have thier draperies very close to their bed as well as at the end of the walls?

I really dont' want to buy new drapes, I like them . I was thinking that maybe in this room I could make the casing smaller and that MIGHT help. Would a 2 1/2 window casing look odd with a 5 inch baseboard.

Looking for any suggestions that you can give me. BUilder isn't keen on changing the windows (coz I could make them smaller) to casement as then at a minimum they would need to be 5"6 tall.

I had the same situation when we built our home. I decided to do one large window on the center of the wall instead of two smaller windows. This picture dosen't show it but the window has a 1/2 circle on the top. This is a very old pic and the window treatments have changed but here is what I did. I really like haveing the huge beautiful window behind the bed. It's very dramatic when you walk into the room.

I don't have a picture, but we currently have our bedroom arranged so that the bed is right beside the window. That puts the nightstand in front of the window and also in front of one of the panel beside the headboard. It hasn't been a problem to have the nightstand out a couple inches in front of the drapery panel for us. Hope it works for you.

I used a board-mounted box pleated valance on the box bay in my dining room. I screwed the board right into the soffit above the window. The way mine was framed, there wasn't enough room to hang a rod high enough to cover the top of the window trim. I made long panels of the same fabric for my living room windows. I used honeycomb shades on all the windows (not room darkening, but I did consider them). Most of the time I leave them up, but we don't have a guest room and the sleep sofa is in the living room, so privacy is an issue when we have overnight guests. Totally Confused

I like my first idea best as far as use of space. I know people say not to put toilets on an outside wall. We had one in our last house in Iowa, but we had 2X6 construction. I don't know how high your window is, but I'm guessing the toilet would fit under there. The shower would be 5 feet long or shorter if you want a wider space to get to the toilet. (kind of tight the way I have drawn). You could do a 5 and half foot long shower and do an angled door at the left end to allow room between the shower and toilet. The vanity would be about 7 feet long, unless you do a 60 inch vanity with a linen cabinet at the door. I would reverse entry door swing if you do that.. The second top right could work and you would still have a small closet. The bottom left plan would require waterproofing your front window. Hopefully someone will give you other ideas. The bottom right plan is bigger, but no closet. Each square equals 1 foot.

I think Miz_G's suggestion to remove the trim from the two boxes, repair the wall and have only one window makes the most sense. It's strange that the previous owners left the trim when they removed the windows. Put an attractive shade on the one window and a piece of artwork where the old windows were.

You have such a nice view I can see why you would want to retain it during the day. I'd mount one rod from wall to wall, and use drapery panels. One panel on each end and wider panels in the middle around the sliders so you can pull them closed. Use a lightweight lined fabric so you can get teh fullness you need without taking up too much space. Don't use shutters. They block a LOT of light even when open, and you would never have a clear view outdoors.

Suzan - THanks for the picture - the only reason why I don't want to put the bed in front of the window is - I have a very, very limited view from any of my windows. So I am using my small side yard as my yard. So I will have flowers, a pond, etc. and I want to be able to see if from my bedroom and my headboard is solid and very high.

Sujarf - I don't mind having a nightstand in front of the window but I do mind that I won't be able to use outside mount drapes or my current drapes unless I find some sort of solution -

Would it bother you to have 1 room with smaller casing than other rooms. If I make the casing smaller it will help alittle bit.

Would 2 1/2 window casing look ok with a 5 inch baseboard?

Downsizing is very hard to do...

Ahh--now I think I see what you meant! sorry I didn't get it before. IMHO I think the smaller casing size would look fine with 5" base, but I'm not sure I'd bother switching to the smaller. I looked through my "idea" picture files to see if there might be something useful since you say the bed needs to fit there. Here are a few rooms arranged with the bed between the windows, either extremely close or even overlapping the window slightly...perhaps you'll see something that helps. Good luck with your home. Yes, downsizing is a bit difficult, but you may find you'll enjoy this one just as much as your previous home.

Our master bedroom has two windows on either side of the bed.

I don't mind the WTs framing the bed (kind of like it), but I wish the windows weren't so long that the nightstands have to be in front and block part of them.

sujfar- Thak you for the inspiraton photos. And like another poster the first pictures paint color looks really nice...
My preference is to have quite a bit of space between the edges of the bed (my bed has high pillars (68 inches) and also from the walls. I just don't like certain pieces of furniture overlapping windows. I don't mind a chair, or a nightstand but the bed bugs me.

I met with the builder this morning and he feels that we will have about 4 inches from the bed and maybe 6 inches from the wall. I guess that's alittle better..

I have given up a door to my patio from the bedroom, so that I have more space for my large furniture. I hope I dont' miss it...

sorry no help on the paint color in the 1st pic...and so glad your bldr thinks there'll be enough room for your bed without the overlapping. Good luck!
