I'm not sure that what the guy did was illegal. Unsafe or not, bicyclists are allowed on the road.

What he did was in fact the law. Bicyclists are required to follow the rules of the road, just as drivers are.

My son bicycles nearly daily between two cities - a ride of about 50 miles. My husband rides his motorized tricycle to do our shopping twice a week. Cyclists follow the same road rules as cars - including using left turn lanes. Drives of cars are required to pay attention and not run them down, just as they are supposed to pay attention and not run down pedestrians.

What else would you want them to do?

I know the bicycle is legal, but he was endangering those children. Would you want your kids out in traffic like that with only canvas between them and a car. You didn't see the cars zipping by.

Vala, I'm glad you said something, despite the fact that he seemed to ignore it. Legal or not, his maneuvering sounds quite dangerous. There's at least a chance that what you said to the fellow will eventually sink into his brain.

What is legal is not the point being made. It is dangerous for babies in a canvas wagon to be so close to cars whizzing by on a busy street. I would never endanger my babies that way. A quiet neighborhood street is another thing, but not a busy 4 lane street.

Just last month I was sitting at a stop light in our car, hemmed in by the center curb on one side and cars on the other. The lady in the lane facing us drove through a red light, hit a car in the intersection, and drove straight into me, sitting at the red light. I could not go anywhere to avoid her, saw her coming, knew she was going to hit me, and was stuck. She was so panicked that I don't think she ever hit the brakes.

Stupid drivers are everywhere. It doesn't matter if you're in a car or riding a bicycle. Stupid, inconsiderate, drunk or whatever, they are everywhere.

That doesn't mean cyclists should be driven off the roads, with children or not.

Moni is correct. My son has more trouble cycling in downtown Austin (a bike friendly town) than he has commuting to San Marcos on freeway frontage roads.

Drivers are required to pay attention and share the freaking road!

Actually, one is safer on ones bike on a four lane road, than in neighborhoods. People zip out of their drive ways without REALLY looking. Lots of cyclists I know have been hit that way. Some seriously hurt.

By the way, I also ride like cars drive, and go one lane at the time to the left turn lane to turn left.

I totally get the point vala55. What too many bicyclists and motorcyclists don't get is that right, wrong or otherwise, when they take on a 3000# vehicle, they're likely going to lose. And I think it's time to contact the lawmakers about the bike trailers with kids in them. For one thing you can't have people in a trailer behind a car - for cryin out loud you can't have someone in the back of a pickup! That should be illegal, if it isn't already.

I had an incident last summer with a motorcycle with a baby trailer behind it weaving in and out of traffic. After all, cars are supposed to "look out" for motorcycles, right? They don't have to follow the rules of the road. (ARGH!)

I'll say it again. I miss winter. I miss the snow and ice now. At least we didn't have too many of these issues to deal with. Spring has sprung and the buffoons have blossomed.

When push comes to shove, babies are not safe in a car either! Do you want babies to be hauled in a hummer or tank only?

My grand daughter loves the rides her daddy takes her on. She gets all excited when he tells her, she gets to go.

When she was born, we (Jerry and I) bought the children trailer. We got one for two kids, cause we knew, that there would be more. Nathan gets to go as soon as he is 1 year old. I think the problem will be, that Allison has to share the trailer...

We really can't holler for EVERYTHING to be outlawed. Before long, we would not be able to do anything anymore.

Thank you cynic. you are so right we can't even ride in the back of a pick up truck here because it isn't safe. But we can drag babies behind a bicycle in a canvas trailer in traffic.

I didn't say anything should be outlawed.

They are working on a law here that a motorcycle can run a red light because their vehicle can't trigger the green light. they are suppose to stop and look and go when safe. Now if one of them is hit while running that red light it will be the driver of the car with the green light will be blamed.
