We get at least 6 calls every day from recorded messages regarding the phone company, safety devices. etc. For some reason, the land line phone has a different ring to it, when those calls come in, so we don't bother to answer them. That's a nice feature! Going on the Do Not Call list, didn't help with anything.

From time to time I re-register, doesn't help.

I am a professional and I make no commission on sales, so I must charge for my time, at $10.00 for up to 10 min., sliding scale to $25.00 per hour.

If you give me your company's name and address, and tell me how many minutes of my time that you want to contract for, we can proceed.

Otherwise, my ear is closed.

How do you even know who is calling? You're wasting too much of your time.

When you answer, say hello ONCE, then don't say anything else. If it's a boiler-room sales call, there will be a gap before someone comes on. Hang up before the person (or machine) even comes back. It is not rude.

Hang up the minute that you know the caller is not your neighbor Fred or cousin Idd, or someone else you know. If you happen to hang up on a real person, they will call back.

But for heaven's sake, don't waste your time even listening to the caller.

And many of these callers are acting illegally, and will not pay attention to the Do Not Call rules anyway.

Sometimes the type of calls that you indicated come from medical sources--pharmacies where you buy your meds, medical offices, insurance companies etc. Also even though AARP claim they never sell their names, just subscribing to the magazines puts a person on lists. Also when you register a item, or try to win something.
Try using various spellings of your name if possible--then you can trace it down--kind of.

Remember - if you go to a store and they ask for your phone number at the checkout, you are giving permission for them to call you. You also gave them permission to sell your number.

When you order something, or subscribe to something, and you give your phone number - again... you just gave them permission to use it.

There are also exemptions to the Do Not Call list. Non-Profits are exempt. Politicians are exempt. There are a lot of ways around it.

I am so sick of all the calls. I usually look at caller ID or pick up and if they don't say something the second I say hello, I hang up. It's all senior related issues. We are supposed to be on a do not call list.

Yes, this worked for a while, but we too are getting calls. Maybe one or two a day.
Since we all have cell phones, we know to just look at the caller iD. Sometimes it could be the drug store or a doctor's office, but for the most part it is telemarketers.
I feel sorry for anyone who entertains the thought of doing business with one of these people.
One time I got a call from a chimney sweep company. I interrupted her and said sorry no, we don't use our fireplace. She became indignant and yelled at me for not letting her give her sales pitch! I hung up. Although I was shocked, I understood how frustrated she must be, doing this job day after day and getting no where.

I feel sorry for the people who have to do this job, for employment. I know there could be a lot worse things, but I wonder how many actually get a legitimate sale, or whatever they are trying to push. 1 out of 50? Nobody likes these calls.

Rachel from Cardholder Services calls to check upon me nearly every day. If I don't recognize the number on Caller ID or if it says Unavailable or Out of Town, I don't answer. If it's an important call, they will leave a message and I can call back.

When I first registered for Do Not Call, it made a big difference, but now the scammers have learned to get around it.

I also notice that my phone gives a different ring when scammers call -- sort of two quick rings followed by normal rings. When I hear that I don't rush to answer.

That's the thing. If I'm in another room, I rush to answer. So do they know how many people they interrupt running for the phone?Actually as I was typing this, it rang. I left the machine take it.

Phones that are connected through the internet often take a few seconds to connect. My mom has learned to wait a sec before saying "hello" when I call. And yes, when Kaiser calls with an automated message for one of us, there is a delay. Or when someone we know calls from overseas. So the hang-up-immediately method doesn't work for us. Too bad there don't seem to be any teeth in the law. ($$, per usual.)

Lol, Kat! My mom in Portland still hears from her too. I have no idea why we got lucky, finally. But there are so many more to take her place. I'm burying a question in here because I don't want to call you out. Do you mind my asking how you are doing? You've been through so much and I do keep you in my prayers.

They call up to 7 times on some days.

We have a talking phone that lets us know who is calling...

So when they call....I just click talk and then off. That way I don't have them filling up my message machine.
And they know I'm here and won't talk to them.

I'm rude and I don't care...I think they are rude bothering me.

I think "Rachel" has been replace by "Ann"; at least that's who I've heard from lately. What really bugs me, though, is when it's a "live" person, and I think I'll be polite and listen for a minute, if I then try to say "no, thank you"--they hang up on me! Gr-r-r-r.

We don't have an answering machine or caller ID and get very few calls from anyone we know. I have dial up internet, still living in the dark ages in the boonies, so I just leave my computer on so the phone gives them a busy signal. Our kids all know to call my cell phone if they need to get in touch with us for some reason which is very rare.

DS, one time, sent me an e-mail telling me to get off the computer as he was trying to call me and didn't want to use up my cell phone minutes as he is quite a chatterbox. lol

I don't feel sorry for these scumbags. They chose to take a job harassing people and they know what to expect. Most think it's a get rich quick scheme and they don't get enough flak IMO. Get an airhorn and give them a blast, use a whistle, flush the toilet with the phone there and make other noises. Keeping them online as long as you can keeps them from assaulting others. Even the stupidest of these morons get the message after a while. And don't try that they're just feeding their families BS with me. There's plenty of legitimate jobs to be had if they want to work and flipping burgers will make them more money for their families than committing crimes and violating the DNC rules is a crime so don't try telling me it's "perfectly legal" while their goal is to bilk people out of their money by misrepresenting themselves and what they're shilling. The poor drug dealers are just trying to feed their families too. People that let their kids do this did a poor job of raising their kids AFAIC.

The reality is this crap works. People buy from them or they wouldn't bother. It's like spam. If people would put their greed, naivety and stupidity aside, they wouldn't bother with spamming people. But people buy it so they'll continue.

You don't need to re-register with DNC list. Once you're on it, you're on it. But few people understand how you get on calling lists. If you call a toll-free number, you give them permission to call you. If you give your number to someone, you give permission to call you. DNC isn't there to override this. I saw the disclaimer that even calling for service on your phone will put you on a marketing list.

Also, yes it takes a while to be added, but that doesn't mean it'll immediately stop calls! It won't do any good until the reputable places renew the DNC list. It's one tool that will have long term benefits, not short-term. Also, when you talk to these idiots, you have to be careful what you say. If you say, as many do, "Take me off your list...", you just told them they may call you! You told them to take you off the DNC list. You say "Put me on your do not call list for you and any affiliates" and you'll have better luck although there's no one cure for scumbags like these.

IMO the phone companies are profiting from this so they should be held responsible for it. Impose some fines on the phone companies and they'll cut telescammers down a lot.

Not true. I can block any number or caller. Couple clicks and they get a message of my choice.

I have only one problem and that's with the ARC group. VVA, Lupus, Disabled Vets, etc. They got my number and keep selling it to one group after another. I'll never donate to them again.

The delay you hear is because the call is being transferred to an open scumbag. They're not dialing one number at a time, they dial thousands and when they detect a pickup, it routes it to one of the POS that's open and they pick up and start their spiel.

When you get the same type of call you can probably trace it pretty easily. With step in tubs, security devices, senior insurance, etc, have you given your number to AARP or something? As Marie said, there's other places to consider. Just think about who you've given your number to recently. Even hospitals will put you on calling lists. Once one scumbag gets a hold of it, they'll use you until it sinks in they won't profit from you on the phone then they'll make a profit by selling your number to another scumbag and more morons will be calling you.

Several years ago, we signed on with the DNC list and enjoyed a dramatic reduction in calls. My elderly mother, whom we signed up, also reported herself to be free of the sales calls. We renew occasionally and have not had a problem.

I'd say that we get a couple of calls a month, if that....robo calls....except during peak election time when it's much more frequent. I'm very happy to hang up on them.

We are on the Do No Call List in Canada. Of course the Do Not Call List still allows calls from certain organizations etc. And of course from every single person out there. We have never had so many calls - it is a joke. We do not have call display - not that that would matter. I have told callers (nicely) the first time to please not call us again - by the second, third etc. call not so nicely. I unplug the phone at night because the calls start at 5:30 a.m. Then there are the scam calls....

I rarely use my cell phone so that's the number I give to vendors that require it. They can call that number as much as they want and I'll never know. My land line is only given to my family and friends. I have a friend who is just the opposite. All of their personal calls are made on their cell phones, so they give out their land line when requested. They have the ringers on their land line phones turned off. They use those phones for outgoing calls only. Either way, most of the spam calls are avoided with very little effort.

and don't forget the junk mail lists as well...boy did i sign my fil for that one!! his caregiver says it has slowed down some...

Even after registering her several times, my poor mother was so besieged with robo calls that they were very distressing to her, in fact had her in tears many times. We recently had to put her in an assisted living facility and got her one of the straight talk home phones. I hope that she won't get calls on that new number. I'm almost afraid to register that number.
