Oh My Gosh . . . My DH Just Bought Me . . .

. . . two of the most beautiful mahogany chests of drawers for our dining room as a surprise gift! I'm totally floored!

We've worked so hard over the years to furnish our home nicely. We've just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary and all this time, we've had his old, ugly, awful childhood chest of drawers in our dining room to store linens, candles and games in. It's embarrassing, but it was very low on our priority list of things to buy.

We'd talked to our KD when we had our total kitchen remodel late last year and he came up with a built-in long hutch, but the price was $17,000.00 . . . not including labor!!! Needless to say, we said thanks but no thanks!

Last week my bestfriend and I were in a big antique & consignment shop in town when I spotted this set, along with the beautiful old floor lamp I was talking to Oceanna about. I went back to buy the lamp on Wednesday and it was already sold, but I looked again at the chests. They're from the Twenties or Thirties, built very well and are solid mahogany. One is short and wide and the other is narrow and tall . . . and absolutely perfect for the walls on either side of the French doors in our dining room!!! It's like they were made for that spot . . . about 87 years ago!

Anyhoo, last night at the dinner table DH mentioned that his old dresser was looking very tacky, especially since we'd redone the family room and kitchen. I told him about the chests and he seemed only politely interested, but that's it.

This afternoon, unbeknownst to me, he snuck out to look at them. Actually, he doesn't have to sneak out, as he's the boss, but you know what I mean ;^P . . . and he bought them! He just called me, with a big,happy "Surprise, guess what I've just bought for you!". We're picking them up tomorrow morning.

I can't wait to show you them ;^)

Buyer Beware> I have bought items from Goodwill off and on for the past few years. We didn't have a store close by. One thing you need to check is the outrageous shipping charges and handling charges. I saw a lovely metal vintage style tea pot I would love to have....bid 3.00 reasonable............shipping 10.00........handling.....2.00. Hmmmmmmmmmm tea pot not so attractive at 15.00 and that's if you get it for the 3.00 bid. I love looking thru all the items Goodwill has but some of their shipping rates are way out of line. All these items are donated and I know for a fact it doesn't cost 10.00 to ship one tea pot. Don't want to rain on your parade just want to make you aware. I also bounce between goodwill and ebay and yes I am a wicked sniper...............LOL Does anyone remember Andy's Warehouse Auction? It was run by Fingerhut no less..........oooooooooh the bargains I got there and their shipping was reasonable. How i miss them. There were a couple others but I don't remember the names. Sigh! Hmmmmmmmmm maybe I should google. Then there's freecycle.............I can't begin to tell you all the goodies I have gotten off there. Ok so I belong to 5 different ones.............:) I subscribe to all that are within a 50 mile radius and try to pick up two or more items on one trip if possible. Anybody watch the Junk Brothers? 1Kgrace345, I kept going back and forth pondering over getting a Presto canner or the All American...I really could have gotten the Presto many years earlier, but I wanted to save my money and just wait. I have two mirro canners that I have had since I was married in 1970 that my grandmother gave to me that she used and they were literally falling apart. The handles were gone, and they no longer had handles to replace them, so I was having to lift the pot by the hot metal...last year I burned my hand really bad...but I kept on canning. I just bought those new gloves made out of well, what ever that is...my brain just backfired...I hate when that happens...darn it. My husband (behind my back) took them both to the dump...that made me really MAD because they were my grandmothers, and I would have like to have kept them for old times sake, anyways. But, he bought me this new one today..and I just about had a flying flip when he said we were going to town to get one...I got ready faster than lighting! I understand how you would still feel like you were a proud parent of your All American, lkgrace!! LOL If my husband wasn't looking at me on the way home I would have petted mine...LOL!!!

Granlan - Out here between Amarillo and Canyon we received between 2/10 and 3/10 inch of rain yesterday evening. Oh, everything smelled so good and I actually watched rain run off the roof of the shop! Our pastures are dry as a bone and I welcome any and all rain we get. Oh yes, we had a new Beefalo heifer yesterday morning. She's a cutie. Here's prayers for more rain in Oklahoma and Texas! We all need it..........

Thank you! I've just called and left a message on DS's voice mail at grad school: "Hi Hon! Guess what, Dad just bought me an awesome set of mahogany chests for the dining room. So, remember when you told me that you need a dresser for your new place? Wellllll, today's your lucky day! You get Dad's old ugly dresser for the NEXT 25 years . . . and you can have the bookcase that we had on the other wall, too! Love you, byeeeeeee!"

Too funny! College kids don't need new furniture, do they ;^P ?????

LOL I love your message to your son, I'm in the process of redoing our family room and I offered my media cabinet to my kids, none of them want it!!! That's kids for you. Congrats on the gifts and for nabbing a great guy!!!

Well, the photos will have to wait another day or two. We picked up the chest this morning. Go them unloaded and into the dining room, but the old stuff is now in the middle of the room, making this place look like crowded furniture store! But, had to hurry and dress up and head out to DD's concert. 3 1/2 hours later, I got home and the drawers are now filled, but we're leaving in 15 minutes to meet some friends for dinner at our favorite New Mexican restaurant. I'm hoping to talk DH into helping me get the "Befores" out to the garage tomorrow. Then I can take pics, but ohhhhh, the new pieces look so pretty!

What a wonderful story! And congratulations on your lovely new furniture. I can hardly wait to see them in your home. Your story reminds me of something similar that happened to me about 15 years ago. I drove past an antique store every day on the way to work, and kept admiring a maple corner hutch in their window. I told my husband about it and said that I wanted to run in and check the price when I had a chance. But a few days later it was sold. I told my husband I was kicking myself for not making it in sooner, because I had really loved it. The next day when I got home from work, it was all set up in the dining room, with my dishes all arranged on the shelves. Turns out he was the one who had bought it! It was such a lovely thoughtful thing to do - it made me cry! What a guy!

oh congratulations on such a thoughtful surprise gift, and a thoughtful husband.

You know, I was eyeing a very cute little convertible on Friday, and called and told dh about it. It was already gone off the lot when we went by today. Do you suppose I'll find it in my garage tomorrow? Gosh, if he were your husbands twin, I'd have no doubt. :o~ LOL!

No, he's the boss at work, so he doesn't have to sneak out. He just kind of snuck out without telling his staff where he was going, as they're all my friends and he thought they might let it slip if I called.
