Often older people's voices become gravely and more scratchy. Didn't Frank Sinatra sound a little rougher as he got older?

I listen to callers on QVC, and often I think they sound old, but of course I don't really know unless they happen to mention their age. My stepmother doesn't sound old on the phone, but she's getting up there a bit.

Why do you ask? Do you think your voice sounds old? Why don't you call a KTer and have her guess your age?! Just kidding, but it's and idea.

So I think sometimes voices change with age and sometimes not.

i think my mother's aged...but she also developed late life asthma. i do think smokers are affected, too...

I sound more and more like my mother as I age.

My aunt called me when she was about 85 or more, and I would not have recognized her high pitched, thin voice. Smokers tend to have rather deep voices.

I can usually tell if I am speaking to a young person versus an older person. I think our voices do change as we age.

I've had people talking to me on the phone and think I'm much younger than I am, and I'm 71. Now, if they saw me in person they would be in for a shock. lol.

I don't think my voice has aged very much. I don't think you could tell my age, if you talked to me on the phone. I know at the Texas get together, someone expressed surprise that I sounded different than they imagined. I think they thought I was a lot tougher sounding than I really am.

I was beginning to worry about him having throat cancer. So I made him go to the doctor. They sent him to an ear,nose and throat to run a tube down there to check. He said there was nothing wrong and it was just that he was getting old.

I've always had a little girl high pitch voice. (I think that was from having radiation treatment on my throat when I was a baby. I believe it was because my Thymus(sp?) gland was growing and shutting off my air)
But now that I'm older it is pretty much normal. I used to get teased about my squeeky voice.

I always had a softer voice and sounded younger, but at the age of 59 I sound my age. I think it is mostly because I had a "Professional" voice. Since I've retired, I sound older because I don't care if I "impress" you or not.

I know voice training can change the pitch of a voice, and that smokers often have damage to the vocal cords that lower the pitch. Very elderly people are often weak, and their voices are weak too.

When I was a young woman nobody telephoning could tell whether they were speaking to me or my mother (37 years my senior), or her best friend from Rhode Island (45 years my senior) -- at least until Aunt Florence's New England accent gave her away.

I'm 54 and sound about 15 on the phone. My 30 year old daughter and I sound almost identical, only she talks louder.

Everyone thinks I'm a man on the phone. That deep raspy voice from years of smoking. Other then smokers I think our voice stays about the same.

Drinking can also lower the voice, as well as smoking - I was told by somebody or another that for a lot of people, the vocal cords do age and sag, thus changing the pitch and can begin to become a kind of "warble" the older we get.

So far, I think I'm about the same, maybe very slightly lower. I have watched older actresses deliberately change their voice pitch depending upon the role they were playing, it was an extremely effective tool for the character developement.

Absolutely. It's a subtle shakiness in the voice along with a tendency to speak a bit more slowly.
