New PB Houston, Information overload!,,
Comments (5)I believe you will find the 1.5 ft depth of the tanning ledge to be far too deep. I usually build mine at 6" - 9" of depth. 17" of water would be over anyone's head if lying or perhaps even sitting down. Too deep for small children. I would also switch to a variable speed pump. It will cost a bit more upfront, but reduced operating costs will quickly recapture the cost and to continue to provide savings. I am not sure how energy efficient the Tristar pumps are (I use Pentair), but they should be able to provide you with that data. Problem with a variable speed pump is that you would probably need to change from an Intermatic controller (old fashioned time clock- I still use them when cost is a big issue) to a computerized one. UltraPure is a good ozone system (don't let Mr. New Jersey dissuade you from this type of sanitation! Life is different apparently in Houston than New Jersey). The only problem with the Ultrapure is that the ozone is injected through the pump, which can cause the pump seal to fail. I am now using Ozone Joe's which bypasses the pump. Lastly, I don't think the Ultra pool cleaner has a very good reputation (it didn't when I used Hayward years ago). You might check on alternatives. I don't see a booster pump for the cleaner. It's hard to find a decent suction line cleaner that won't frustrate you to death from being slow and sluggish. I don't like automatic water fillers if you have an overflow line built in your pool. They operate like flush valves on a toilet and can get stuck. They are better and less expensive alternatives to Diamond Brite, although it is a good product. Use the savings for LED pool lights or a computerized controller....See MoreJandy Variable Speed pump
Comments (23)Hi Dogbone10-- A few questions for you . . . First, is the 5 year warranty you are getting from your PB a special offer? I thought the ProEdge dealers warranty was only 3 years? I think you did the right thing going with the longer warranty on an existing pump. If you have read some of my other threads you will know this is why I will ultimately select one PB vs another. I just can't see spending so much for high-end equipment and fancy electronics only to have them fail in the first year . . . and if you know any one that has a pool it can happen. Since my pool will be for next season I am thinking I might have a chance. I don't think they will release it until January myself so as not to throw dealers into having to get up-to-speed, so to speak, until the off-season. Second, I am guessing you are referring to the fact that the pump might not be as quiet as some of the Pentair pumps. How far away did you place your equipment from the pool wall? How far is your run to the spa? I am thinking about going to the 26-50 foot range, but hope this won't hurt the spa operation. What size plumbing did your PB use on the Suction Side and also the Discharge Side? Third, I am thinking of requesting the same pump the 2 & 1/2 HP, is your part # SHPM 2.5 - 2? Here is a link that might be helpful: http://www.jandy-downloads.com/pdfs/pumprefguide.pdf Fourth, Can you please, please, help with information regarding your in-floor system as I am agonizing over this expense. What model Paramount system did you have installed. My one PB offers the current PCC200, but I do not know anyone who has this particular manufacturer's system, although I have seen much older pools (10+ that had working Paramount systems). It would be tremendously helpful to me to know if this was an upgrade to their circulation system that the PB might offer as standard or was it a total system add on? If I could get this system at a reasonable cost it would help me to finalize a decision to go forward with the pool at this time. If you would prefer to send more specifics directly, I set up a g-mail account so that I could corresponded with people on this site: NJFolks4@gmail.com. Fifth, would you mind sharing your other Jandy equipment choices of filter, heater, lights and automation and the size of your pool. Hope you don't mind me asking, but I am trying to coordinate what would be the best in some cases while not duplicating electronics, oh and energy efficiency to keep those bills down too. I have heard about horribly high gas bills for heating here in NJ. Wow, a lot of questions, so I hope this is not too much. THANKS for any help you are willing to provide....See MorePool Equipment needs??
Comments (8)Pools that are larger than 650 square feet of surface area generally have two skimmers, using today's construction standards. Spas that spill in to the pool should be added in this total. Spas that are "stand alone" and a separate body of water are not. The spill over acts as the skimmer. In general, larger filters tend to work more effectively. This is because it helps to have the water passing as slow as possible through the media for improved filtration though there are some limits with DE filters. Charging a DE filter does require some velocity in the tank so that an even coating of media is obtained initially. With a cartridge filter, bigger is usually better and I have not found an exception there. Sand filters with 1.5" diameter plumbing inside don't cut it with today's in ground pools. They need 2" pipes. For example, a Hayward S244T with a two inch multiport will not make my list since it's internals are 1.5". The same for a Pentair Sand Dollar. I would urge up sizing. With today's modern variable speed pumps and larger plumbing, after the initial charging, they can be slowed for filtering purposes. This does present some additional issues however. The pressure in the tank is reduced so the normal 10 PSI change we used to see with older, single speed systems, is now also reduced to a few PSI change. Drains are more accurately described as submerged suction outlets. Think about it for a sec. What if they were on the side wall, 18" down from the surface. They MUST be split to conform to today's construction practices. It keeps you safer. Pumps in a spa are typically still using about a quarter HP per port plus a blower. If the equipment pad is some distance, instead of a 1.5 HP pump, a 2 HP might be used but this is not the norm though it is distance sensitive. Scott...See MoreUltraPure Ozonator problems.
Comments (15)Barco, I just ran across your post here and thought I'd give you some advice on your situation. To start with, I am the National Service Manager for UltraPure Water Quality, Inc. The first thing I'd like to point out is that even though your UltraPure is plumbed into a tee on the suction side of your pump, this is not a true standpipe installation as the tee is above the pool waterline. Because of this, you still require a check valve to be installed, which brings me to my next point. Our check valves are designed specifically for Ozone gas, meaning that they have Ozone resistant Viton seals and stainless steel springs. The purpose of the check valve is not to keep water from entering the Ozone generator, it is there to keep the water in the pump from draining when the pump shuts down. These are custom made check valves which will handle the Ozone gas for a number of years, but as with any check valve they will fail at some point. You failed to mention a couple of critical points before telling people to stay away from our company and it's products. 1. How old is your UltraPure system (any check valve will fail at some point)? 2. Who installed the system, and why were these issues not taken up with them? 3. Did you try calling UltraPure to diagnose your problem? If this is a legitimate problem with our product and not the installer we will be happy to find a resolution. We have been in constant business since 1982 and pioneered the suction-side injection method for the Ozone delivery in residential pools. When installed correctly, less than 1% of air/Ozone mixture (by volume) is introduced through the pump/filter/heater. This method of installation is far superior to a pressure-side "venturi" method for the following reasons: - We inject Ozone into the highest pressure point in the system, between the pump and filter. This forces the Ozone mixture into the water with the use of the pump impeller. - Most of the oxidation work is done in the pump and filter, also degreasing the filter in the process. - The small champagne bubbles that exit at the pool returns have mostly reverted back to Oxygen by this point. By using a "venturi" type injector on the pressure side of the pump none of the above benefits are possible. There is very little pressure to force the Ozone into the water, very little contact time for the Ozone to effectively oxidize the water, and the resulting "live" Ozone that exits the returns can "bleach" the sides of the pool above the return jets. We believe in our method to the point that we will not offer our products for a pressure-sided installation, that is the "old fashioned" installation method we did a number of years ago. I can assure you that your problem is not common as we sell thousands of units per year and have a warranty rate of less than 1% (manufacturing standard is 5%). We are the market leader for Ozone systems for residential pools and are a very respected manufacturer in the pool and spa industry. Our products have been tested and proven for effectiveness and reliability by ourselves and numerous third-party resources. We do not manufacture products that do not live up to our claims, which is why we do not and will not manufacture any Corona Discharge (CD) Ozone generators. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns and I would be happy to help you out. to WOMANOWNED, Our pool units, depending on model use either 1A to 2A. You are only running 1 or 2 UV lamps (similar to fluorescent lamps).
