You should take your racks out, if not they will tarnish and will be hard to slide in and out. I have no idea about the burner "covers" since I don't have a gas range.

I always leave my oven racks in, and put in the burner grates, and any cast iron that I want to clean off so I can reseason it. The burner 'thingies' come out just beautifully.

Works great. But, your racks will darken a bit. I don't mind that and have never had any trouble sliding them in and out. And I've been cleaning my ovens that way for over 30 years.

It's your call--you'll hear arguments both ways.

I don't know but they are a pain to clean in the sink.
I haven't used oven cleaner on them because well.
I have a self cleaning oven.
I shouldn't have to buy oven cleaner to clean the stove top grates. How's that for logic?

The oven racks and clean so I will taken them out.
I will attempt to scrub, in my inadequately sized sink, the large grates with all it's edges and crevices one more time before I toss them in the oven to be magically cleaned.

I have always been told to take them out. BIL owns an appliance store. But then mine are aluminum. If you do decide to remove them, a great way to clean them is to put them in a garbage bag and then spray them with oven cleaner and leave them sit in the bag overnight. The gunk is very easy to remove.

Casey's right about taking the racks out Lori. I'm speaking from experience here. I forgot to take mine out the last time I cleaned and they got dull and tarnished. We've since replaced the ovens, but I want to sell my old ones. Hope it doesn't hurt the sale. I'll try to polish them up some, but don't know if it will help or not.

Yeah, what Dea said about the burners is what I've always heard.

My oven's instructions say take the racks out. Don't forget to clean the window before starting the self cleaning cycle. Appliance repair man told me never to clean anything in a self cleaning oven. He also told me to clean burner grates in the dishwasher. Mine are long (6 burner stove top) and I put them in by themselves.

I'm someone else who owned an appliance store for 12 years. TAKE THEM OUT or they'll look scroungy.

Heck -I always leave my racks in - they look fine to me, LOL!

I do spray some Pam on a paper towel and run it down the "runners" where the racks go after I use the self clean cycle.

This lubricates that spot, and your racks slide easy.

I found that hint in my oven book - and yes I was hard up for something to read that night :)

My repair man told me to ALWAYS take them out.Not only do they turn color,but he also said they can warp and then be hard and sometimes impossible to pull in and out.Also said never add anything else to the oven during the cleaning.

I wouldn't suggest turning the oven on t clean and then leaving the house,what if something malfunctions?? You could come back to your whole house in a pile of ashes!! JMO,and i'm safety conscious.

I have been waiting for this warmer weather to get here so I can clean the oven.DH has emphesema (sp?) and I want to be able to open the windows in case there are fumes. I'll heed the advice from my KT friends and will clean the oven window and take out the racks before firing up the cleaning cycle. Dottie

What does your owner's manual say about leaving the racks in? My manufacturer and many others say to remove them. GE has a few models that say you can leave them in, but my GE isn't one of them. One poster on the appliance forum left her Dacor glide racks in the oven and couldn't get them out after running the self clean cycle.

I have never used mine...because I'm a chicken...I'm afraid of it...

Tell me what to expect so if I do use it I don't panic.

I have cleaned my oven once and yes, there was odor.
Right at first.
Just open the doors and windows and light a candle.
The smell doesn't linger.

I clean the class in my with vinegar.

I did and will remove the oven racks.
The owners manual advises to do so but it sounds as if they can be left if groddy?

I haven't decided whether to put the stove top grates in.
I think I will.
It's hard to hurt cast iron.
Even if the season burns off it doesn't matter.
It's not like I cook on them and food will stick.

Flamey says don't leave the house while the self-cleaning is going on!!!!! It gets incredibly hot and it's too dangerous. Why risk it. Do it while you're home.

We don't have an opinion on the grates. We have electric.

I have had self cleaning ovens since 1969, electric, gas, whatever. I always leave the house. Yes it does get hot but the door locks. Its surrounded by insulation. I have never heard of a fire from a self cleaning oven. I'm an attorney, I see the Judgments and Settlements sheet every week. There are dangerous things in the home, but that doesn't seem to be one of them.
As for cleaning cast iron stove top grates, we put them in the dishwasher.We have a Wolf range (unfortunately not self cleaning)

My burner grates are probably cast iron...they are heavy with a Porcelain finish. They were nice and shiny black but not anymore.

Still think I could put them in for cleaning?
