The Kitchen Table

before and after nightstand

I found this sturdy little night stand at a garage sale

for $25

and after, the sides are a different wood, so I went with

satin black. I was going to keep the wood fronts on the

shelves in the wood, but my taping job wasn't so hot

so I just painted them! lol I have two more nightstands

to finish for our bedroom, and I have to paint those too

but I'm using spray paint for sure on those!

Hi all! ML, I made one of these things for my bedroom about 12 years ago. My problem was it slid out. I suggest sewing some of that no-slip carpet pad or other rubbery stuff to it before you put it under the mattress. I stuck a table-top eyeglass case with fake sheepskin liner into one of the pockets for my glasses, kept cough drops and such in the pockets. It matched my headboard which I had made from plywood and foam and that I covered with two fabrics for a nice cushioned coordinated headboard. I hate to admit it but the kleenex box separates DH and me in our King bed. Whatever I am reading (with a book light tucked inside), DH's old Palm (on which I play solitaire if I can't sleep) and sometimes my carpal tunnel braces separate the two of us! Sometimes a pair of greasy cotton gloves that I use for moisturizing my hands overnight lands there, too. Occasionally the TV remote ends up there. Do ya think I am trying to build a wall to keep DH on "his" side? He sometimes thinks so! ML, when I had only a tiny space for a nightstand, I got a tiny little bath etagere from JC Penney. It had multiple wire shelves. I made a shelf for each one out of cardboard and covered it with the left over fabric from the headboard, then I did not have to deal with it only having wire shelves. Our bed sat up very high because we had a double row of drawers underneath, so I could reach a couple of the shelves from bed, keep my not-read-yet books on the bottom shelf, and still have room for our wedding pic on the top shelf. Awesome job! I love the blue, but then, blue is my favorite color. Most of the stuff in my house is blue. In the sea of white furniture I've been painting, I was thinking of painting a couple of things blue. Maybe one item in each room, kind of like making a "signature". What color blue did you use? OMG - what a goofball I am. I have been working so many hours and am so short on sleep - sorry I didn't include the link for the lamp. It would center over the bed, so the art would move. It is a bit on the modern side, but I think might be very cool in your space: giclee retro lamp You can see that they have the shade for sale alone, as well as other styles of the lamp with the shade at the bottom of the page. I like how it picks up your colors, including the taupe/beige squares that echo your bedding and window treatments. Do look at their selection of lamps. Many have free shipping, and they have tons of plug-in wall lamps that don't have to be hardwired to work. Seeing your floor plan, I would be inclined to flip the bed to the opposite wall, and let the dresser be on the wall by the closets. Seems like you could put the dresser a bit to the left on that wall, and still fit in a nice chair in the corner near the window. Thanks for moving the pillow! LOL

I have a platform bed like that without the headboard (since ours is in a bay window). When dressed, you barely see the bed (at least the way I dress it) so the matching dresser wouldn't be a big deal. I'd do the two, but definately not the side tables. That's too kit like :o( Mirror pieces would be lovely, but keep them substantial in scale to go with the bulk of the bed headboard. I'd also love to see some black pieces considered. You can go with a lovely iron urn with a marble top and say a antique sewing table (iron on the bottom) which makes a great night stand, or do a desk on one side :o)

My mother was an antique dealer when I was growing up - she called this piece a telephone stand, used as a side table beside the phone chair, with the shelves holding the phone book, newspaper and magazines.

You did a GREAT job refinishing this piece!
