Water Softener Help Needed!

I have been reading with great interest all of the sound advise you have been providing here, and would like to see if you could lend us a helping hand. We are building a home for a customer that is very important for our business down in Mexico (San Miguel de Allende) where there are water hardness issues. Our customer is very insistent on having us install a water softener, and thankfully, we stopped him from buying a unit at Lowes and bringing it down - before installing something that might not work (will not - actually - after reading this forum), we wanted to see what we were getting ourselves into. We have been looking with not much success for a local "expert", and the only company that more or less knew what we were looking for, made a water test but would release the results only if we bought a unit from them?!? (not good!) The unit they are pushing is an Aquor (never heard of the brand), and it also seems undersized (20K grains). We did learn from them that the water hardness is 22gpg, there is no perceivable iron, and the pH is a bit basic. We have looked on the internet, but it seems like everyone claims to have the BEST softener in the market.

We understand that the ideal situation would be to find someone locally, but if we can't we may have to bite the bullet and go the DIY way. We also tried the Mexico Culligan dealer, and after 5 calls requesting help we gave up (if they won't answer for a sale, imagine what it will be to service a problem). Can you help us (a) determining what we would have to do to get a reliable water test (I know there are some DIY water testing kits - or perhaps the solution would be to take a sample to the US), and (b) do you have some online sources that would be reputable/reliable? We do not want to get into the water business, but on the other hand this is a very important account for us, and we will probably be doing a lot of work in San Miguel, so we need to sort this problem out as soon as possible. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
