Least Expensive Time to Have Rugs Washed?

Is there a season when rug cleaners are sitting on their hands, and presumably discounting their prices to wash orientals?

I know they are busy before holidays, but there must be some 'off seasons'.

I have about 500 sq ft of rugs; worth trying to save a bit.

I'm thinking fall. People get in a spring cleaning mode, or is that myth? lol I think the fall is a good time, get all the dirt from coming in and out of the garden all spring and summer, more activities etc.

In our area there isn't an 'off season'. I take my area rugs in once a month (5x7's and 8x10's) about every 2 months, and the cost never varies.

It costs me $25 for the smaller ones and $50 for the bigger ones. I don't have carpeting in my house - just bamboo and tile, so I've never asked about wall-to-wall.

Why not call the companies and ask them if they have an 'off' season. I found big discrepancies in carpet cleaning prices, so do shop around.

If people are still looking for a cheap solution I had the same challenges on a similar size garden plot. I added compost and manure but not enough. Before I planted for a couple weeks I sprayed Compost Tea on the ground to add moisture and then I added gypsum rock dust to help break up the clay a little bit. The compost tea was by far the cheapest way that I could help the plants. Because my soil needed so much help I ended up spraying with compost tea almost every watering, but they loved it and it was very affordable. I found DIY compost tea brewer instruction posting that really helped, and another one on the best compost tea recipes. After reading for awhile I decided I love Compost tea. Try this recipe, it's been proven under a Microscope. Compost tea: 5 gallon bucket 4 gallons of water 1.5 cups of Earth Worm Castings 1/3 Cup Molasses Aerate with 18-20watt airpump for 30 hours. Use immediately! You can pour the tea through a filter and into your sprayer or just water each plant with an equal amount. You Cannot hurt your plants with compost tea when done right. Just make sure that it doesn't smell awful, or sweet. You want it to smell earth and pleasant when you use. To sweet and the molasses hasn't been used up yet and you don't want too much of this in your soil. Also, if it smells foul, then it hasn't enough air and should be tossed!

Plumbing AND electrical will be your biggest expense. If you open the walls, you have think about an electrician, too. You may not be able to put a tub and shower into the existing plumbing for your two sinks. The trap for the sinks is under the sink, not in the slab, and you will need them in the slab for the shower/tub Raising everything might be possible, but will look cheap. Plus, stepping into a tub that is raised will be inconvenient, and possibly dangerous. I don't see how you will avoid cracking the slab if you move the plumbing. I would not be surprised if your water lines were in the slab too.

Thank you both very much for the information. If I thought I could get something pretty close to what I want for $20-25,000, I might be able to convince him. I will certainly have to pull out all of the stops to do so though... :) Gorilla, I understand what you mean about the economies of scale. I guess it does not take much to dig a bit larger hole and add a bit more material while they are doing the whole thing. It is good to hear that the extras are what add most of the cost, because I don't really need much in the way of options. I can do without a heater to start with. Your idea to add those types of things later is an excellent one. Snookums, thanks for the information on topics I should be researching. In the little bit of time I've put into it, I've read that maintenance effort has come a very long way in recent years. Maybe I will have to promise to take care of it myself!

I am a lover of historic homes. I know exactly what you mean about vinyl windows. They look cheap. I am a fan of actual old wood windows. You know, the ones your contractor wants to rip out and replace with vinyl?? Yes, they have to be scraped and painted. BUT...the homeowner can, with a little training, we taught to care for them...replace glass, putty, repair the pieces. Some of these windows have survived for over 100 years to be replaced with crappy plastic windows carrying a 20 year warranty in order to achieve energy savings. And most wood windows these days are $300+...they are double paned, filled with gas, etc. I *think* what this poster is talking about is getting a simple, old-fashioned, wood, double-hung, single paned glass window that looks beautiful. Maybe not. These are available if you can find them in your area (the Northeast appears to have them at local hardware stores while Texas doesn't carry them at all). Check out Indow window inserts if you are concerned about efficiency. On another note, having taken some woodworking classes, I would like to say that if you are looking for a simple wood window, it is not outside the purview of your ability to build them yourself after doing proper research. If you are that set on having them, you could give it a shot on a shed, etc, and see how it goes. It is my understanding that most loss of energy in a home is through air leaks, not necessarily through window glass....but I am not an expert in any of these areas....

Wow, my estimate is $678 to wash a total of about 500 sq ft of hand-knotted wool rugs. (Including pick up and delivery.) They're 12 X 18, 8 X 12, 8 X 10 and 6 X 9 -- and two 30" runners, 8' and 10' long.

Kayjones -- Are we talking 'apples and apples'? How do you get them to the cleaner? I can't even lift mine. You're paying $50 for an 8 X 10; my quote for same size is $106, and that is supposedly "30% off".

I put the rugs in the back of my SUV and take them to the cleaner and go back to pick them up. I can't lift mine, either - my son puts them in the SUV and they unload them, then load them when I pick them up and my son unloads them at home.

When I first started getting my area rugs cleaned, I was quoted $4/sq. foot. Then, someone told me about the one I now use and it's like 40 CENTS a sq. ft.

Chisue, are you in chicago? If so I just had mine done and found a great place at a great price. They sent them out to the place I was using and only charged half price.
