Least expensive gunite pool? (Help me convince DH :)

Hello all,

We are in the middle of a new build, and I am trying to convince my husband to let me add a pool.

I LOVE the water. We had an above-ground pool when I was a child, and I was always in it. We've vacationed at a Caribbean villa with a pool, and it was all he could do to get me out of it long enough to go sightseeing. I spend so many hours in the ocean on vacation, that I am "pruney" for days after we return.

My DH, otoh, cared for a pool one summer back in the early 70's and hated it. I have tried to explain that care technology has changed a lot since then, but he is not buying it.

The two major uses would be 1. exercise and 2. general ambience - sunning, floating, swimming, dinner and/or drinks by, etc.

What I am wanting is very simple... Just a basic small to medium rectangle with lights, and walk in steps to the side. No water effects, no diving board or slide or waterfalls, etc. MAYBE some kind of integrated bench seating along the side. Not too deep. (Not sure what depth is best for swimming.)

I was thinking I might be able to get it smaller by using a swim tether as opposed to trying to make something long enough to swim laps in. I tried swimming laps in a pretty short pool once, and became exhausted with worrying about whacking myself, and getting turned around.

Soooo, can someone give me a range or a ballpark figure on what to expect to pay? I am close to Raleigh, NC. The good news is that he is not TOTALLY dead set against it, but does not want to do it right now with all we have going on. Would it add a lot of cost to do it later as opposed to now?

First of all, there is very little difference in actual pool costs between small and large pools... it's the options that will generally raise the price of a pool the most.

For instanece, here in Orlando FL, the base price of a 400 SF pool costs about 20,000... and an 800 SF pool costs 23,000 (no decking/tile/coping). Now, large pools have more tile, more coping, etc., so an 800 SF pool may have 50% more tile/coping than a 400 SF pool... not 100% more.

Automation adds (builder prices) about 2,000; heat pumps adds another 5,000, etc.

If you are interedted in swimming, build the largest lap pool you can afford. You won't need much decking. Have the builder pre-plumb for a heater, and other options, so that you can buy from the internet, and install yourselves.

If you want to convince him of minimal maintenance, research and then discuss with him things like:

An automatic vacuum like the Hayward Navigator
A salt system
Autofill
Overflow drain
Computerized controls (like the Aqualogic, that includes a salt system)

Of course nothing is maintenance free but my dh spends about 5 minutes a week - tops, to test the water and add acid. Maybe brush it a bit. With everything else automated and a salt system there's not much else to do, but swim.

My dh is the type that is a total couch potato and doesn't take out the garbage or change a lightbulb without a fight. But the pool? He LOVES it. Can't keep him away. We were going to hire a pool guy but it wasn't necessary. It's his baby.

The floors are oak (combo of red and white) and the stain is 50% Red Oak and 50% Early American, both by Minwax, with a satin poly. The tv - there is a shelf above the fridge that the tv sits on, and then we built the frame for it out of the same wood the cabinets were made of. Originally that was going to be a built-in fridge there, but then we changed our mind on what fridge we wanted (for the record, we do NOT love the frige itself, as appliances go) so we had space up there for the tv. The Direct TV box, unfortunately, does not have a good place to live. It sits on the counter just to the right of the fridge - you can see it behind the elegant "Go Diego Go" sippy cup on the counter in that last photo. I hated that it was there at first but now I am used to it and don't mind so much. Actually, that counter is a clutter magnet, and having that box there makes us keep it cleared off or the signal won't get through, so I guess it was a blessing in disguise. No DVD player, but when we just redid the master bedroom, we got a flatscreen with the DVD player built in so we would have one less component to house - and the DVR box sits in a little cubby built into the wall up where the TV is mounted.

I've been following this thread with interest because my DH and I have been having the same argument for years. He has the fireplace at the top of his list and I have about 10 projects above it on my list. I love your bricks, but do think they need to be cleaned up at bit (not the moss - love that). If you're going to keep them as they are, I would dig out the edges and lay landscape ties on either side to create a more distinct border. It also helps when gardening by creating a bit of a raised bed (easier to add compost, mulch, etc). Last summer, I did away with our old walkway which looked much like yours except it was ugly interlocking brick with grass growing in it instead of charming moss. I pulled up all the old bricks and laid them on the front boulevard with a for sale sign and they were gone quickly. The base they had been laid on was still in pretty good shape, I just bought bags of quarter down limestone from home depot and spread it over top. I bought new stones using my airmiles points and, voila!, I had a brand new sidewalk. I think the stones and all materials cost about $700 total. My neighbours got the exact same stretch of walkway done professionally and it cost them $2500. It took me about a week and by the end of it, I had the best toned arms (and walkway) on the block. I have found dogs much more tolerable than kids! Among other benefits, they don't scream in expensive resturants. I happen to have two Pembroke Welsh Corgis, one of which actually says words. Now, my wife's brother and his wife have a 10 year old male warlock boxer named Ceaser. I no sooner walk in the door and sit down than I have a 75# boxer in my lap. They are known to slobber a tad. He and a great dane and a three-legged black lab each have their own leather sofa on which to lounge. Did I mention that they don't scream in expensive resturants.

I'm closer to the Austin area, but figured it was worth answering. Our swim season is from about April to October, with high frequency from May to September, the outlying months are for my crazy kids and their friends. This is obviously variable by winter highs/lows, we had a mild winter this year so got in sooner. No heater, though we have a hot tub that is used year round (remote, not connected to the pool). Maintenance is very simple for us: check chemistry every so often (a 2 minute job) then fix whatever needs fixing, usually just dumping in a gallon of acid (30 second job). Brush the sunshelf a few times a week, check the skimmers (together maybe 10 minutes). My biggest time is spent in vacuuming, which most people probably do not do regularly; we have bar stools and the automatic cleaners can't get around them, so about once a week I vacuum that area, the cleaner actually sweeps it into a fairly nice little pile so it isn't a huge deal (30 minutes or so). Add it all up and it's less than an hour every week. Pretty good ratio of fun/work there if you ask me, considering my kids and their friends (an average of 15 kids per week) get MANY hours of fun per week, then average in dh and I's time out there just enjoying our morning coffee, etc. About once per month I get in there with a mask and goggles and vacuum thoroughly, but I don't pretend to be normal, and this is not necessary, I just like REALLY clean pools. This takes maybe an hour per month, and I clearly don't do it unless the water is a reasonable temp, usually just June-August. During the windy season (which may not happen in Houston??), I spend some time scooping leaves from the top, that's fairly time intensive for those few days in Fall, but that's optional, you could leave the leaves for the skimmers and cleaner if you'd like, it just appeals to my OCD tendencies to skim them off the top. To answer your question literally, MY dh does none of these things except checking water chemistry and pouring in acid, I do the rest (by choice, I find pool cleaning strangely satisfying). I spend tons more time on my plants than I do my pool.

If I thought I could get something pretty close to what I want for $20-25,000, I might be able to convince him. I will certainly have to pull out all of the stops to do so though... :)

Gorilla, I understand what you mean about the economies of scale. I guess it does not take much to dig a bit larger hole and add a bit more material while they are doing the whole thing.

It is good to hear that the extras are what add most of the cost, because I don't really need much in the way of options. I can do without a heater to start with. Your idea to add those types of things later is an excellent one.

Snookums, thanks for the information on topics I should be researching. In the little bit of time I've put into it, I've read that maintenance effort has come a very long way in recent years. Maybe I will have to promise to take care of it myself!

My friend did a builder owner pool and spend about 27,000 on a pool that would have easily cost 40,000. If you are looking to save, you could do this and for what you want to spend get a lot more than you would if you went with a builder. But like the others posted, you can get standard builder to build a basic pool for your price. Start calling around and research the features you really want.
